Energy conversion process from the photoexcited electronic states studied by the temperature lens and acoustic peak delay methods in solution

Ultrafast temperature rise after the deactivation of the electronically excited state of 2-hydroxybenzophenone in various solvents is investigated by two photothermal techniques; temperature lens and acoustic peak delay methods, and by the population grating technique. The results from these methods show that the thermalization process takes place by two phases; fast (<1 ps) and rather slow (30 ps) processes. From the solvent dependence of the thermalization rate, we suggest that these processes are related with the intermolecular interaction and the solvation structure around the photoexcited molecules.     

Optical Module for Modified Signed-Digit Computing Based on Bit Plane Encoding and Pattern Operations

We propose here a new optical modified signed-digit (MSD) adder module based on bit plane pattern encoding of MSD digits and pattern operations. The pattern operations required in the algorithm are duplication, combination and shifting. They are simply performed by using optical components such as beam splitters, mirrors and parallel plates, instead of optical logic arrays. An optical MSD adder module comprised of six properly interacting blocks with all optical components packaged on a common substrate is presented in detail. We analyze the system errors caused by manufacture and alignment of optical components, the information throughput, the intensity nonuniformity and the system volume of the adder module.     

Spectrofluorimtric determination of hafnium with 3-hydroxychromone

The fluorescence of the 1:1 hafnium—3-hydroxychromone complex in 4—0.5 M hydrochloric acid is used to determine 0.4—9.0 μg of hafnium in 25 ml of solution; the relative standard deviation is 0.15%. Zirconium does not interfere in 2-fold amounts.     

Mutual information of ising systems

We obtain the mutual information of Ising systems, which shows singular behavior near the critical point. We connect the mutual information with the magnetization and the correlation function. The mutual information is a suitable measure for the critical behavior of Ising systems.     

The 4s- and 4p- XPS spectra of Xe, XeF2 and XeF4

The 4s- and 4p- XPS spectra of Xe gas, XeF₂ molecule and XeF₄ molecule are calculated by an ab-initio atomic many-body theory. The 4s-peak and the prominent ‘4p’-peak are predicted well by the present theory. In XeF₂ and XeF₄ the spectral lines observed below the 4d-double ionization threshold are the 4d⁻²4f multiplet states strongly perturbed by the interaction with the initial 4p_1/2-hole state. They are very similar to the spectral lines which emerge with an increase in atomic number (e.g. Ba).     

A new system of gamma-ray spectrometry for activation analysis

A new system of γ-ray spectrometry has been designed and constructed. This system performs a precise, quick and automatic activation analysis using our nuclear reactor (TRIGA-II Research Reactor) as a neutron source. The main components are detector system consisted of a high resolution Ge(Li) detector settled in a shielding cabinet and a well-type NaI(Tl) scintillation counter for anti-Compton measurement, and data acquisition and spectra analysis system performed independently by two mini computer. The system has operated for atmospheric aerosols as an example of activation analysis.
