Distance degree regular graphs

In this note, inequalities between the distance degrees of distance degree regular graphs and to characterize the graphs when one of the equalities holds are proved.     

THE EFFECT OF ALA AND RADIATION ON PORPHYRIN/HEME BIOSYNTHESIS IN ENDOTHELIAL CELLS

To study porphyrin biosynthesis in human microvascular endothelial cells, HMEC-1 cells, a transformed human microvascular endothelial cell line, were incubated with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), the precursor of endogenous porphyrins, and porphyrin accumulation was measured spectro-fluorometrically. The HMEC-1 cells accumulated porphyrin in a concentration-related and a time-dependent fashion. Protoporphyrin was the predominant porphyrin accumulated in the cells. The effect of light on protoporphyrin accumulation was evaluated by exposing the ALA-loaded HMEC-1 cells to ultraviolet-A (UVA) and blue light, followed by another incubation with ALA for 2–24 h. Enhancement of protoporphyrin accumulation in irradiated HMEC-1 cells was observed 2–24 h after irradiation, which was associated with a decrease in ferrochelatase protein and activity. Porphyrin accumulation from ALA after irradiation was significantly decreased when catalase (750–3000 U/mL, 29.3–44.3% suppression) or superoxide dismutase (270 U/mL, 36.4% suppression) was present during irradiation. These data demonstrate that HMEC-1 cells were capable of porphyrin biosynthesis, and that exposure of protoporphyrin-containing HMEC-1 cells to UVA and blue light, which includes the Soret band spectrum, decreased the ferrochelatase activity and its protein. These changes were mediated, at least in part, by reactive oxygen species.     

Preequilibrium α-particle emission in heavy-ion reactions

The α-particle emission following ¹⁴N-induced reactions on various heavy targets at 85–115 MeV has been studied. Cross sections of heavy residual nuclei produced after α-emission were measured in the case of the ²⁰⁹Bi target and were found to be close to the angle-integrated cross sections of α-particles, indicating that the α-emission mainly takes place in a binary process. The measured angular distributions of α-particles are pronouncedly forward-peaked, while the energy spectra are always characterized by the Maxwellian distribution even at forward angles and reproduced excellently by the statistical evaporation formula when nuclear temperature is treated as a free parameter. The resultant value of the temperature is high (4–6 MeV) at forward angles and decreases monotonically with increasing emission angles.The energy and angular distributions of protons, deuterons and tritons were also measured in the ¹⁸¹Ta + ¹⁴N reaction at 115 MeV. The results are similar to those of α-particles. In particular, nuclear temperatures turned out nearly equal to each other, being consistent with the hot-spot interpretation for the relevant preequilibrium light-particle emission.     

Crystal orientation in a semicrystalline polymer in relation to deformation of polymer spherulites. IV. Crystal orientation mechanism of nylon-6 under uniaxial stretching

A model relating crystal orientation to the deformation of nylon-6 spherulites under uniaxial stretching is discussed in terms of the orientation distribution functions of reciprocal lattice vectors of crystal planes, such as the (002) and (200) planes. The distribution functions calculated from the model are compared with those obtained from x-ray diffraction experiments. It is found that the crystal a axis and, consequently, the direction of hydrogen bonds within the crystal (α modification) orient parallel to the lamellar axis in the undeformed state, and that the crystal orientation behavior of nylon-6 is much different from that of low-density polyethylene, being characterized by much smaller values of the reorientation parameters of crystallites within orienting lamellae. Moreover, small-angle light scattering for H_v and V_v polarization is also calculated on the basis of the spherulite deformation model by taking the nylon-6 crystal as having orthogonal–biaxial symmetry in optical anisotropy. It is concluded that the H_v scattering can be realized in terms of the proposed model for spherulite deformation by taking into account a considerable contribution of hydrogen bonds to the molecular polarizability, so as to make the polarizability along the crystal a axis larger than that along the b axis. In other words, this conclusion suggests positively birefringent spherulites in the nylon-6 samples studied.     

Photoluminescence measurements in Be-δ-doped back-gated quantum well

We measured the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of a two-dimensional electron system induced in a Be-δ-doped GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW) with a back gate. The electron density is controlled by means of the back-gate voltage. We estimated the electron density using the magneto-optical method and the PL linewidth, and also by undertaking transport measurements. We show that a uniform 2DES as large as 1 mm² is induced by the back-gate operation from 2.5 × 10¹⁰ cm⁻². This experiment indicates that optical measurement with a back-gated QW is advantageous for studying the low-density 2DES.     

Studies on organic fluorine compounds. LIII. Preparation of functionalized trifluoromethylated compounds using 1-phenylsulfonyl-3,3,3-trifluoropropene

Reaction of 1-phenylsulfonul-3,3,3-trifluoropropene(1) with carbonyl-stabilized enolate anions smoothly proceeded to give the addition products(7) in good yield while with an alkyl-lithium or Grignard reagent the formation of the vinyl anion(8) was one of the reaction pathways. Reaction of 1 with the chiral nucleophiles(11, 16) was carried out to give the functionalized trifluoromethylated compounds(13, 7b) in 4-43% ee
