Internal Rotation of the Hydroxyl Group in Isopropanol and the Chirality of the Gauche Form: Fourier Transform Microwave Spectroscopy of (CH(3))(2)CHOD

The rotational spectrum of the deuterated isopropanol (CH(3))(2)CHOD has been observed by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and analyzed to yield tunneling splitting of 4431.4613 (17) MHz, between the antisymmetric and the symmetric gauche forms, which is much larger than the 2400 MHz estimated from the internal-rotation potential function reported in the literature. The potential function for the OH internal rotation has been examined in view of the discrepancy between the observed and estimated tunneling splitting, and it was accounted for by taking into account isotope effects on the potential constants. The deuterium quadrupole coupling effect has been included together with the Coriolis terms in the off-diagonal block of the Hamiltonian matrix for the gauche form. The deuterium quadrupole coupling constants obtained for the trans form were employed to calculate the components of the coupling constants as functions of the internal-rotation angle, and the components at around 120 degrees were compared with the values observed for the gauche form, thereby leading to unambiguous determination of the signs of the constants in the off-diagonal block; the signs are not obtainable from an ordinary analysis of the rotational spectra. The chirality of the gauche form was discussed by placing special emphasis on the effect of intermolecular interactions between two chiral molecules. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.     

High-Quality Protein Crystal Growth of Mouse Lipocalin-Type Prostaglandin D Synthase in Microgravity

Lipocalin-type prostaglandin (PG) D synthase (L-PGDS) catalyzes the isomerization of PGH(2) to PGD(2) and is involved in the regulation of pain and of nonrapid eye movement sleep and the differentiation of male genital organs and adipocytes, etc. L-PGDS is secreted into various body fluids and binds various lipophilic compounds with high affinities, acting also as an extracellular transporter. Mouse L-PGDS with a C65A mutation was previously crystallized with citrate or malonate as a precipitant, and the X-ray crystallographic structure was determined at 2.0 ? resolution. To obtain high-quality crystals, we tried, unsuccessfully, to crystallize the C65A mutant in microgravity under the same conditions used in the previous study. After further purifying the protein and changing the precipitant to polyethylene glycol (PEG) 8000, high-quality crystals were grown in microgravity. The precipitant solution was 40% (w/v) PEG 8000, 100 mM sodium chloride, and 100 mM HEPES-NaOH (pH 7.0). Crystals grew on board the International Space Station for 11 weeks in 2007, yielding single crystals of the wild-type L-PGDS and the C65A mutant, both of which diffracted at around 1.0 ? resolution. The crystal quality was markedly improved through the use of a high-viscosity precipitant solution in microgravity, in combination with the use of a highly purified protein.     

Peumusolide A, unprecedented NES non-antagonistic inhibitor for nuclear export of MEK

A new polyketide peumusolide A was disclosed as an unprecedented NES non-antagonistic inhibitor for nuclear export of MEK, a promising scaffold for antitumor agents with novel mechanism of action, from Peumus boldus Molina. The absolute stereostructure as well as optical purity was established by use of the two synthesized enantiomeric model lactones. In addition, the Δε values in their CD spectra were demonstrated to be the conclusive index for determination of not only configuration at C-3 but also optical purity of natural congeneric polyketides. Peumusolide A was revealed to show NES non-antagonistic action by the biotinylated probe and to inhibit proliferation of MEK-activated tumor cells selectively.     

Oxidation of Dimethyl Sulfide in Air Using Electron-Beam Irradiation,and Enhancement of its Oxidation Via an MnO<Subscript>2</Subscript> Catalyst

The decomposition of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) at initial concentrations of 4.5–18.0 ppmv in air was studied under electron-beam (EB) irradiation. Doses to decompose 90% of input DMS were 2.5 kGy for 4.5 ppmv, 3.4 kGy for 10.6 ppmv, and 3.9 kGy for 18.0 ppmv. HCOOH, (CH₃)₂SO, and trace CH₃OH and (CH₃)₂SO₂ were produced as irradiation products in addition to CO₂ and CO. Application of an O₃ decomposition catalyst to an irradiated sample gas led to an enhancement in the oxidation of DMS and its products into CO₂ and the decomposition of O₃. For 10.6 ppmv DMS/air, the mineralization ratio increased from 41% via only EB irradiation to 100% via the combination treatment at 6.3 kGy. The yield of CO₂ to CO_x increased from 5.3 to 87.6% by combination with catalytic oxidation. This combination treatment enables the irradiation energy used to deodorize gas streams containing DMS to be reduced.     

Analytic non-integrable Hamiltonian systems and irregular singularity

We study a C ^∞-Liouville-integrable and analytic non-integrable Hamiltonian system. We will show that an irregular singular character plays a crucial role in the analytic non-integrability of the system. A concise route to the C2-symmetric tricyclic skeleton of ryanodine

Ryanodine is a potent calcium channel modulator. In this Letter, we report the 10-step synthesis of the highly substituted tricyclic ring system of ryanodine. Diels-Alder reaction via dearomatization of 2,5-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diol and subsequent SmI₂-mediated reductive coupling of eight-membered 1,5-diketone efficiently introduced the four consecutive fully substituted carbons of the tricyclo[3.3.2.0^2,6]decane system.     

Organic high-spin systems: Synthesis,electrochemical and spectroscopic studies of π-extended tetraaryl m-phenylenediamines

Three highly π-extended tetraaryl-1,3-phenylenediamines for charged high-spin molecular systems were successfully synthesized using Suzuki coupling. Their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties were also examined. They showed blue fluorescence. The dications derived from highly π-extended tetraaryl-1,3-phenylenediamines were generated and characterized by electron transfer stopped-flow method.     

The scalar curvature of CR submanifolds of maximal CR dimension of complex projective space

We treat n-dimensional compact minimal submanifolds of complex projective space when the maximal holomorphic tangent subspace is (n − 1)-dimensional and we give a sufficient condition for such submanifolds to be tubes over totally geodesic complex subspaces.
