Intensity of Ar spectral lines in an Ar-O2 glow discharge

Measurements of relative intensities of spectral lines and of plasma parameters have been carried out in an Ar-O₂ d.c. glow discharge under the following conditions: gas pressures of 1, 2 and 3 torr and partial pressures for O₂ of 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05 and 0.1 torr. Many of the Ar line intensities decreased when O₂ was added, while some were enhanced. Enhancement of the 6677A and 7504A lines has been most notable. The number density of metastable Ar atoms is decreased when O₂ is added. Upon addition of O₂, the electron temperature is decreased and the electron density increased, except at a gas pressure of 1 torr; the electric field strength in the positive column is also increased.     

Low temperature magnetic properties of trimeric clusters

The degeneracy in the Heisenberg model of the three chromium clusters having D₃ symmetry is split by the antisymmetric exchange interaction. Based on this new energy level scheme, the low temperature behavior of the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility are reexamined.     

Symmetries and conservation laws of the classical Boussinesq equation

A recursion operator for the classical Boussinesq equation is given, which yields infinitely many symmetries and conservation laws. It is also shown that these symmetries define a hierarchy of the classical Boussinesq equation each of which is a hamiltonian system.     

Formation of cyclic organosilicon compounds via organopolysilyl anions starting from methoxymethyldisilanes. A mechanistic study

In the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium methoxide, sym-dimethoxytetramethyldisilane was converted into α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes, MeO(SiMe₂)_nOMe where n ? 3, at room temperature. On the other hand, similar treatment of the disilane in THF solution gave cyclic polysilanes, (Me₂Si)_n where n = 5–7. Decomposition of the disilane in the presence of diphenylacetylene afforded a trisilacyclopentene derivative under similar conditions. This compound was obtained also by the reaction between α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes and diphenylacetylene in the presence of sodium methoxide. These cyclic products most likely were formed via permethyl polysilyl anion intermediates derived from α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes. Also, the formation of α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes could be elucidated in terms of the mechanism involving the base-assisted, concerted nucleophilic substitution or stepwise substitution by silyl anions, rather than the successive dimethylsilylene (Me₂Si:) insertion reaction.     

Synthesis of DTPA-conjugated (1,4)-linked 2-aminoglycosides varying in the anomeric configuration and their MRI contrast effect

We describe the efficient synthesis of DTPA-conjugated oligosaccharides composed of alpha- and/or beta-linked tri to monoglucosamines. Gd(iii) complex with DTPA-conjugated chitotriitol has been reported to be an effective MRI contrast agent. In order to elucidate the structure-property relationships, we planned to synthesize the DTPA-conjugated 2-amino-tri-, di-, and monosaccharides varying in configuration at the anomeric positions and the C2 position on the reducing end. Our strategy for the synthesis of the DTPA-conjugated oligosaccharides involves O-perbenzyl protected 2-amino-tri-, di-, and monosaccharides as key intermediates. The 2-aminoglycosides were prepared by non-selective glycosidation of 2-azido-2-deoxyglycosyl donors, followed by separation of two anomeric isomers. Although the synthesis involves separation of the stereoisomers, it circumvents not only the careful tuning of reaction conditions, but also the time-consuming preparation of glycosyl donors attached to different protecting groups. The protected 2-aminoglycosides were converted to the fully deprotected DTPA-conjugated tri- to monosaccharides by the same operation. MRI phantom study using the Gd(III) complexes of DTPA-conjugated oligosaccharides indicates that the number of the monosaccharide units was critical for enhancing the relative signal intensity of water protons per Gd, and various stereoisomers would be candidate scaffolds for MRI contrast agents.     

Revealing the supernova-gamma-ray burst connection with TeV neutrinos

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are rare, powerful explosions displaying highly relativistic jets. It has been suggested that a significant fraction of the much more frequent core-collapse supernovae are accompanied by comparably energetic but mildly relativistic jets, which would indicate an underlying supernova-GRB connection. We calculate the neutrino spectra from the decays of pions and kaons produced in jets in supernovae, and show that the kaon contribution is dominant and provides a sharp break near 20 TeV, which is a sensitive probe of the conditions inside the jet. For a supernova at 10 Mpc, 30 events above 100 GeV are expected in a 10 s burst in the IceCube detector.     

Evolution of the Hall coefficient and the peculiar electronic structure of the cuprate superconductors

Although the Hall coefficient R(H) is an informative transport property of metals and semiconductors, its meaning in the cuprate superconductors has been ambiguous because of its unusual characteristics. Here we show that a systematic study of R(H) in La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals over a wide doping range establishes a qualitative understanding of its peculiar evolution, which turns out to reflect a two-component nature of the electronic structure caused by an unusual development of the Fermi surface recently uncovered by photoemission experiments.
