Influence of d-Electron Divalent Metal Ions in Complex Formation with L-Tartaric and L-Malic Acids

Binary complexes of α-hydroxy acids (L-Tartaric acid and L-Malic acid) with d-electron metal ions (copper, cobalt, nickel) were investigated. Potentiometric measurements have been performed in aqueous solution with computer analysis of the data for determination of the stability constants of complexes formed in the studied systems. The coordination mode of the complexes was defined using spectroscopic methods: electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), circular dichroism (CD), and infrared (IR). Results of the equilibrium studies have provided evidence for the formation of dimers with copper(II) ions and monomers with cobalt(II) and nickel(II) ions.     

Using novel variable transformations to enhance conformational sampling in molecular dynamics

One of the computational "grand challenges" is to develop methodology capable of sampling conformational equilibria in systems with rough energy landscapes. Here, a significant step forward is made by combining molecular dynamics with a novel variable transformation designed to enhance sampling by reducing barriers without introducing bias and, thus, to preserve, perfectly, equilibrium properties.     

Performance of laterally elongated pillar array columns in capillary electrochromatography mode

In the present study, cylindrical and laterally elongated pillar array columns were investigated for use in capillary electrochromatography. Minimal theoretical plate heights of H = 1.90 and 1.46 μm (in absence of sidewall effect) were obtained for coumarin C440 under unretained conditions for cylindrical and rectangular (laterally elongated, aspect ratio 4) pillar array columns, respectively. By comparing dispersion at the entire channel width to that at the central zone only, it appears that sidewall related dispersion significantly contributes to overall dispersion. A 40% reduction of the plate height was observed by taking into account only the central channel zone. A kinetic plot analysis was performed to evaluate the potential of the studied geometries by considering a maximum operating voltage of 20 kV as limiting parameter. It was demonstrated that rectangular radially elongated pillars produce a higher efficiency than cylindrical pillars and other microfabricated column structures for microchip capillary electrochromatography previously studied.     

Salen impregnated silica gel as a new sorbent for on-line preconcentration of cadmium(II)

A new sorbent – salen impregnated silica gel – was prepared and characterised for application as a minicolumn packing for flow-injection on-line preconcentration of cadmium(II). The system was coupled with flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FI-FAAS). The optimal pH for Cd(II) sorption was in the range of 7.4–8.8 and nitric acid (1%, v/v) was efficient as eluent. Sorption was most effective within the sample flow rate up to 7?mL?min^?1. Sorption capacity of the sorbent found in a batch procedure was 26.3?µmol?g^?1 (2.95?mg?g^?1). Enrichment factor (EF) and limit of detection (LOD) obtained for 120-second loading time were 113 and 0.26?µg?L^?1, respectively. The sorbent stability in the working conditions was proved for at least 100 preconcentration cycles. The evaluated method was applied to Cd(II) determination in various water samples.
