Simultaneous determination of inorganic arsenic,antimony, selenium and tellurium by ICP-MS in environmental waters using SPE preconcentration on modified silica

This paper deals with a simplified multi-element profiling of inorganic arsenic, antimony, selenium and tellurium in the form of ⁷⁵As, ⁸²Se, ¹²¹Sb and ¹²⁵Te by ICP-MS for amounts less than 10?µg?L^?1. Internal standards such as ⁷²Ge and ²⁰⁹Bi were successfully used for the suppression of both influence of macro elements Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ or Al³⁺, and interference of limited concentrations of heavy metal ions. Modified silica sorbents Separon? SGX C18, C8, CN, NH₂, RPS and Phenyl were tested for the preconcentration of As, Sb, Se and Te (0.25–5?µg?L^?1) in the form of ion associates with cationic surfactants from 50–250?mL sample volume. 1-etoxycarbonyl-pentadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (Septonex®, 0.005?mol?L^?1) was suitable for this purpose in the presence of 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol, 2-pyrrolidinecarbodithioate and 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid. The quantitative retention occurred at pH 7?±?0.2 and the mixture of acetone with ethanol in ratio 1?:?1 in the presence of 0.1?mol?L^?1 HCl was used for the quantitative elution. Organic solvents and the excess of acid were removed by evaporation prior to the determination by ICP-MS. The determination of the above trace metalloids in various kinds of water with enrichment factor till 50 times on silica Separon? SGX C18 and the above reagents were compared with the standard addition method.     

SOME REACTIONS OF 1,3-THIAZINE DERIVATIVES WITH ALIPHATIC DIAMINES

Abstract

A wide range of 2-substituted-5,6-dihydro-4H-1,3-thiazines (I) and tetrahydro-2H-1,3-thiazines (II) have been found to undergo a facile ring transformation reaction with aliphatic diamines to form the corresponding dinitrogen heterocycles (III) and (IV).     

“Heteroglycals” As New Potential Glycosidase Inhibitors. Synthetic Approaches From D-Arabinose

Within the frame of an ongoing project on glycosidase inhibitors, we have been interested in the synthesis of “heteroglycals”, namely, glycal analogues with sulfur or nitrogen in the ring. Glycals² are well known for their applications in sugar chemistry in particular for glycosyl transfer.³ They are also known as glycosidase inhibitors through a slow chemical reaction with the enzyme. Recently exo-glycals emerged as a new class of glycals⁴ which showed interesting features as glycosidase inhibitors but also as precursors of glycomimetics such as C-glycosides.⁵ We have undertaken investigations on related heteroglycals: such compounds are of interest because they combine a planar geometry at the anomeric center and a possible charge site - both elements known to be important to mimic the transition state of the enzymatic glycoside hydrolysis process.⁶     

Ferromagnetic liquid crystals for magnetic field visualisation

In this paper, we demonstrate how to apply recently discovered ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal for visualisation of magnetic fields. The material exhibits strong optical response to both external electric and magnetic fields, which gives us an opportunity to use it for the detection of an area of magnetic vector field in a way that both, the magnitude and the direction of a given field can be simultaneously measured. We discuss the physical model that describes the behaviour of ferromagnetic liquid crystal placed in a liquid crystal cell and demonstrate the method of extracting the information about an arbitrary magnetic field from the combination of magneto-optic and electro-optic response of the sample placed in that field. We have applied the principle to a special case, where magnetic field was visualised on a 2D area near a cylindrical permanent magnet.     

Porphyrin-containing molecular capsules: metal mediated dimerization of a bis-porphyrin cavity

[reaction] A self-complementary V-shaped bis-porphyrin cavity has been synthesized that is capable of dimerization to form a capsule structure. Self-assembly of the dimer occurs via metal ion coordination and produces an internal volume for guest encapsulation.     

13-Hydroxyacenaphato[1,2-b]quinolizinium bromide as a new flouorescence indicator

13-Hydroxyacenaphtho[1,2-b]quinolizinium bromide (13-HQBr)was selected as a fluorescence indicator to determine basic compounds in non-aqueous media. This compound possesses an acidic phenolic hydroxyl group. It presents varying absorption (ROH, 408, 430 nm; RO(-) 456, 478 nm) and excitation spectra (ROH, 425 nm; RO, 471 nm) depending on the pH of the media, but the same emission fluorescence spectrum (ROH = RO(-), 526 nm) at different pH in buffered aqueous solutions. However, in acidic non-aqueous media (acetic, formic and trifluoroacetic acids), it can be observed that the fluorescence emission spectra differ for the ionized (lambda(em) = 530 nm) and non-ionized (lambda(em) = 440, 470 nm) forms. The fluorescence intensity at the characteristic peaks depends on the acid-base equilibria in the ground and excited states. Therefore, this property could be used to evaluate the concentration of basic compounds, showing a good linearity range between fluorescence intensity and basic sample concentration.     

Three Saponins, a Steroid, and a Flavanol Glycoside from Achyrantes aspera

Summary.  Three bisdesmosidic saponins, 20-hydroxyecdysone, and quercetin-3-O-β-D-galactoside were isolated from the methanol extract of the aerial parts of Achyranthes aspera L. (Amaranthaceae). Their structures were established on the basis of NMR spectroscopic analysis; the complete ¹H and ¹³C assignments of the compounds were achieved by means of 2D NMR studies. Received July 21, 1999.
