Distoriton of area and conditioned Brownian motion

Summary In a simply connected planar domainD the expected lifetime of conditioned Brownian motion may be viewed as a function on the set of hyperbolic geodesics for the domain. We show that each hyperbolic geodesic induces a decomposition ofD into disjoint subregions and that the subregions are obtained in a natural way using Euclidean geometric quantities relating toD. The lifetime associated with on each _j is then shown to be bounded by the product of the diameter of the smallest ball containing _j and the diameter of the largest ball in _j . Because this quantity is never larger than, and in general is much smaller than, the area of the largest ball in _j it leads to finite lifetime estimates in a variety of domains of infinite area.Research of the first author was supported in part by NSF Grant DMS-9100811Research of the second author was supported in part by NSF Grant DMS-9105407     

LC-electron capture-APCI(-)-MS determination of nitrobenzoxadiazole derivatives

Nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) derivatives are determined with limits of detection ranging down to 20 nmol l(-1) using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with electron capture (EC) ionisation. An atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) interface operated in the negative ion mode is used as ionisation source. Amine derivatives of 4-chloro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBDCl) as well as the isocyanate derivatives of 4-nitro-7-piperazino-2,1,3-nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBDPZ) have been analysed using this technique. The parameters favouring electron capture mechanisms have been investigated thoroughly under consideration of the competing mechanism of deprotonation to allow a better understanding of the electron capture process and to improve selectivity of the analysis.     

Motor-protein "roundabouts": microtubules moving on kinesin-coated tracks through engineered networks

Nanotechnology promises to enhance the functionality and sensitivity of miniaturized analytical systems. For example, nanoscale transport systems, which are driven by molecular motors, permit the controlled movement of select cargo along predetermined paths. Such shuttle systems may enhance the detection efficiency of an analytical system or facilitate the controlled assembly of sophisticated nanostructures if transport can be coordinated through complex track networks. This study determines the feasibility of complex track networks using kinesin motor proteins to actively transport microtubule shuttles along micropatterned surfaces. In particular, we describe the performance of three basic structural motifs: (1) crossing junctions, (2) directional sorters, and (3) concentrators. We also designed track networks that successfully sort and collect microtubule shuttles, pointing the way towards lab-on-a-chip devices powered by active transport instead of pressure-driven or electroosmotic flow.     

Immobilisation of electroactive macrocyclic complexes within titania films

The 4-carboxyphenyl-appended macrocyclic ligand trans-6,13-dimethyl-6-((4-carboxybenzyl)amino)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6-amine (HL10) has been synthesised and complexed with Co(III). The mononuclear complexes [Co(HL10)(CN)]2+ and [CoL10(OH)]+ have been prepared and the crystal structures of their perchlorate salts are presented, where the ligand is bound in a pentadentate mode in each case while the 4-carboxybenzyl-substituted pendent amine remains free from the metal. The cyano-bridged dinuclear complex [CoL10-mu-NC-Fe(CN)5]2- was also prepared and chemisorbed on titania-coated ITO conducting glass. The adsorbed complex is electrochemically active and cyclic voltammetry of the modified ITO working electrode in both water and MeCN solution was undertaken with simultaneous optical spectroscopy. This experiment demonstrates that reversible electrochemical oxidation of the Fe(II) centre is coupled with rapid changes in the optical absorbance of the film.     

Colorimetric uranium determination with arsenazo

A rapid and sensitive method is described for the quantitative colorimetric determination of uranium(Vl). Masking agents such as EDTA, tartaric acid or thioglycerol make possible the determination of uranium in the presence of many foreign metal ions. If thorium is present, a preliminary extraction of uranium as the diethyldithiocarbamate is required.
