A new high-precision determination of the strong-interaction shift (∈1s) and broadening (Γ1s) of the ground state in pionic hydrogen (πH) has been started at PSI. This constitutes a direct measurement of the πN scattering lengths and is an important test of the methods of chiral perturbation theory.The experiment will be conducted in two steps. In the first step we aim for a precision of 0.2% for ∈1s and 3% for Γ1s. A new method of energy calibration is used: by measuring πH simultaneously with pionic oxygen (πO), systematic errors are suppressed. The goal for the second step is an accuracy of 1% for Γ1s. 相似文献

The kinetic energy distribution of ground state muonic hydrogen atoms mup(1S) is determined from time-of-flight spectra measured at 4, 16, and 64 hPa H2 room-temperature gas. A 0.9 keV component is discovered and attributed to radiationless deexcitation of long-lived mu p(2S) atoms in collisions with H2 molecules. The analysis reveals a relative population of about 1%, and a pressure-dependent lifetime (e.g., 30.4 +21.4/-9.7 ns at 64 hPa) of the long-lived mu p(2S) population, equivalent to a 2S quench rate in mu p(2S)+H2 collisions of 4.4 +2.1/-1.8 x 10(11) s(-1) at liquid-hydrogen density. 相似文献

We evaluate three meson doorway mechanisms for nucleon-antinucleon annihilation at rest for the first time. Detailed results
are presented for the final state φπ0 originating from the 3S1 initial state and for the φρ channel originating from 1S0. The results presented also include the improved contributions from two meson doorway states and from the tree diagrams.
For all the channels considered a consistent explanation of large and small OZI violations emerges.

In recent TRIUMF experiments, a μ- beam is stopped in a solid hydrogen film with a small fraction of T2. The Ramsauer-Townsend (RT) mechanism allows μt to escape into vacuum with a few eV of energy. To study the emission process, an imaging system was used to determine the
position of muon decays. Experimental histograms are in good agreement with a Monte Carlo simulation.

Solid hydrogen in the form of an inhomogeneous layered target offers several experimental advantages when compared with liquid
or gas. Beams of non-thermalized muonic hydrogen atoms allow us to explore resonant molecular ion formation processes near
eV kinetic energies. Isotopically specific layers make it possible to separate competing and confusing interactions and to
employ the time of flight for comparison with predictions based on theoretical energy dependences. Unambiguous charged fusion
product detection simplifies absolute intensity measurements.
The systematic uncertainties encountered in resonant molecular ion formation measurements, using solid hydrogen target layers,
are being investigated with simulations which use the many calculated energy-dependent rates and cross-sections which are
now available. The importance of the rates for processes such as muon transfer and elastic scattering are discussed, and results
of some recent analyses are presented.
