Weighted Local Nonparametric Regression with Dependent Errors: Study of Real Private Residential Fixed Investment in the USA

This paper presents an overview of the existing literature on the nonparametric local polynomial (LPR) estimator of the regression function and its derivatives when the observations are dependent. When the errors of the regression model are correlated and follow an ARMA process, Vilar-Fernández and Francisco-Fernández (2002) proposed a modification of the LPR estimator, called the generalized local polynomial (GLPR) estimator, based on, first, transforming the regression model to get uncorrelated errors and then applying the LPR estimator to the new model. Some of the most significant asymptotic properties of these two weighted local estimators, including some guidelines on how to select the bandwidth parameter, are reviewed. Finally, these techniques are used to study the real private residential fixed investment in the USA.     

On the exact WKB analysis of operators admitting infinitely many phases

To analyze differential operators whose WKB solutions admit infinitely many phases, we introduce a class of differential operators of WKB type and analyze their exact WKB theoretic structure near their turning points. Our analysis makes full use of techniques and ideas in microlocal analysis; we use a quantized contact transformation to construct a WKB solution of a differential equation of WKB type, and we use a Späth-type division theorem for a differential operator of WKB type to study its structure near turning points. As an application, we show a connection formula for WKB solutions near a simple turning point.     

Energy Transport in Weakly Anharmonic Chains

We investigate the energy transport in a one-dimensional lattice of oscillators with a harmonic nearest neighbor coupling and a harmonic plus quartic on-site potential. As numerically observed for particular coupling parameters before, and confirmed by our study, such chains satisfy Fourier’s law: a chain of length N coupled to thermal reservoirs at both ends has an average steady state energy current proportional to 1/N. On the theoretical level we employ the Peierls transport equation for phonons and note that beyond a mere exchange of labels it admits nondegenerate phonon collisions. These collisions are responsible for a finite heat conductivity. The predictions of kinetic theory are compared with molecular dynamics simulations. In the range of weak anharmonicity, respectively low temperatures, reasonable agreement is observed.     

Evaluation of cardiovascular responses to handgrip tests in patients with ischemic heart disease by radionuclide method

Left ventricular responses to handgrip exercise test in patients with ischemic heart disease were assessed by RI methods. We subdivided into three groups (A: delta EF more than 5% increased, B: delta EF -5%-+5% no change, C: delta EF less than 5% reduced), left ventricular contractility (LVEF/LVET) and Tl defect score changed significantly in global EF reduced group, moreover the usefulness of handgrip test was assured. This instrument is low cost, safety, small size, and available for wide ranged ages.     

Method of local-scaling transformations and density-functional theory in quantum chemistry

The method of local-scaling transformations is developed with a view to applications of the nonrelativistic quantum mechanical variational principle in quantum chemistry. Some properties of local-scaling transformations are studied. The method presented links local-scaling transformations and one-electron densities via the ordinary differential equation that provides a proof of the theorem on the existence of the energy density functional within any given orbit and its universality in a sense of the general theory of ordinary differential equations, and allows the construction of this functional explicitly.

Photographic measurements of propagation speeds of the conducting zone in polyaniline films during electrochemical switching

In order to observe the propagation of a conducting zone of a polyaniline film in response to anodic switching, propagation perpendicular to the film surface was simulated by propagation along the film by mounting the film on an insulated plate. A polyaniline film electrochemically deposited on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode was reinforced by casting polymethylmethacrylate solution on the film. It was peeled off the ITO, chemically reduced and then potentiostatically oxidized at one end in 1 mol dm⁻³ H₂SO₄ solution. Dynamic growth of the conducting zone was observed through an optical microscope. A well-defined boundary between the conducting zone and the insulating zone was seen. The contrast of the boundary did not vary with the electrolysis time, the growth length or the applied potential. The growth rate decreased slightly with the electrolysis time as a result of IR drop across the film. A differential equation for growth rate involving the effect of the IR drop was presented and solved to give more accurate values of the rate. The logarithmic growth ratio exhibited a linear relation with the applied potential, indicating a charge-transfer rate of the Tafel type. The anodic transfer coefficient was 0.2 and the rate constant was 5 × 10⁻⁵ m s⁻¹. The propagation on a molecular scale was discussed on the basis of the experimental results.
