Neighbouring effect in the course of the ozonolysis of a hindered bornene derivative

In the course of the ozonolysis of the bicyclo[2.2.1]heptene anhydride 1, the three bis-lactones 3-5 have been obtained (the structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis).     

Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement in the course of the ozonolysis of a bornene derivative

The ozonolysis of the bicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivative 1 or 2 gave the octaline derivative 6 (the structure was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis) or 7. The exo-addition of ozone to the double bond of 1 or 2 was followed by the fragmentation in carbonyl oxide and aldehyde. Then, the strong electrophilic character of the carbonyl oxide induces an unexpected Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement to give zwitterion 4. Finally, a fragmentation reaction with elimination of dioxygen gave the tetrasubstituted C-C double bonds of 6 or 7.     

Peculiar field-dependent magnetic behavior of cyano-bridged coordination polymer Er(H2O)4[W(CN)8

The two-dimensional cyano-bridged coordination polymer Er(H(2)O)(4)[W(CN)(8)] exhibits a magnetic transition at 12 K and an unusual field-dependent transition from short-range to ferromagnetic ordering.     

A New Furostanol Saponin from the Water-extract of Dioscorea nipponica Mak., the Raw Material of the Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine Wei Ao Xin

26-O-β-D-Glucopyranosyl-furost-5(6),20(22)-dien-3β,26-diol 1, a new furostanol saponin, was isolated from the water-extract of Dioscorea nipponica Mak., the raw material of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine Wei Ao Xin. The structure of 1 was determined on the basis of its spectral data especially by NMR spectroscopy. The result provides the first example of naturally occurring furostanol saponins with a single saccharide chain at the C-26 position.     

Conformal Symmetry and Quantum Relativity

The relativistic conception of space and time is challenged by the quantum nature of physical observables. It has been known for a long time that Poincare symmetry of field theory can be extended to the larger conformal symmetry. We use these symmetries to define quantum observables associated with positions in space-time, in the spirit of Einstein theory of relativity. This conception of localization may be applied to massive as well as massless fields. Localization observables are defined as to obey Lorentz covariant commutation relations and in particular include a time observable conjugated to energy. While position components do not commute in the presence of a nonvanishing spin, they still satisfy quantum relations which generalize the differential laws of classical relativity. We also give of these observables a representation in terms of canonical spatial positions, canonical spin components, and a proper time operator conjugated to mass. These results plead for a new representation not only of space-time localization but also of motion.     

Cold atoms: A new medium for quantum optics

Laser-cooled and trapped cesium atoms have been used as a nonlinear medium in a nearly resonant cavity. A study of the semiclassical dynamics of the system was performed, showing bistability and instabilities. In the quantum domain, squeezing in a probe beam having interacted with this system was demonstrated.Dedicated to H. Walther on the occasion of his 60th birthday     

A new synthetic route to 1,3,4-oxadiazoles. Pharmacological study of some new derivatives

2-Substituted 1,3,4-oxadiazoles have been examined as possible prodrugs of antidepressant hydrazides. A new method of synthesis of this heterocycle from thionoester and five new oxadiazoles substituted at the 2-position by a 4-pyridyl or 4-aminophenyl group and at the 5-position by a phenyl group are described.     

Phosphorus cluster production by laser ablation

Neutral and charged phosphorus clusters of a wide size range have been produced by pulsed laser ablation (PLA) in vacuum at 532, 337, and 193 nm ablating wavelengths and investigated by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The neutral P_n clusters are even-numbered with local abundance maxima at n=10 and 14, while the cationic and anionic clusters are preferentially odd-numbered with P₇⁺, P₂₁⁺, and P₁₇^- being the most abundant ions. The dominance of the magic clusters is more pronounced at 337-nm ablation that is explained by efficient direct ejection of their building blocks under these conditions. Inframolecular protonation process of norbadione A: influence of the ionic environment and stereochemical consequences

The microscopic protonation mechanism, at an inframolecular level, of norbadione A, a pigment extracted from mushrooms and known to complex cesium cations, was determined by using 1H NMR titrations and the cluster expansion method. This study revealed a pH dependent Z to E isomer switch that occurs in both pulvinic moieties. As a consequence, norbadione A can exist in solution in four stereomeric forms (E-E, E-Z, Z-E, and Z-Z), which can be of interest in the development of molecular-level devices. In the presence of 0.15 M NaCl, the calculated microconstants showed an unusual apparent cooperativity between the enol groups, which results from the release of the sodium cations upon protonation of norbadione A.
