New procedure to mask the 2,3-pi bond of the indole nucleus and its application to the preparation of potent opioid receptor agonists with a Corynanthe skeleton

Treatment of indole alkaloids with hypervalent iodine in the presence of ethylene glycol provides 2,3-ethylene glycol bridged adducts that could be converted into the original indoles under mild reductive conditions. This procedure, which involves masking of the reactivity of the indole nucleus at the beta-position, was utilized for the modification of the benzene ring of the indoline derivative and was applied to the preparation of potent opioid receptor agonists with the Corynanthe skeleton. Determination of the Birefringence,the Twist Angle and the Thickness of the Nematic Liquid Crystal Sample by Renormalized Transmission Ellipsometry

Abstract

The birefringence, the twist angle and the thickness of the nematic liquid crystal sample were determined by means of the renormalized transmission ellipsometry. It was proposed that conventional sandwich-type cell is applicable to this ellipsometry measurement and the simplified numerical fitting procedure based on the 4 × 4 matrix method can provide the dispersion of the ordinary and the extraordinary refractive indices. The resolution of the twist angle and cell thickness measurement reaches to 0.05 deg. and 0.05 μm, respectively.     

Incorporation of Baccharis dracunculifolia DC (Asteraceae) leaf extract into phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol liposomes improves its anti-inflammatory effect in vivo

The aerial parts of Baccharis dracunculifolia (BdE) is used in the Brazilian folk medicine to treat inflammatory conditions. Here we examined the ability of free and liposomal BdE to modulate reactive oxygen species generation in human neutrophils in vitro and zymosan-induced acute joint inflammation in Wistar rats. We prepared biocompatible liposomes of soya phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol with low diameter, homogeneous size distribution, and neutral surface charge. Free BdE decreased joint swelling, total leucocyte and neutrophil infiltration, and the synovial levels of tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukins 6 and 1β. Incorporation of BdE into liposomes preserved its capacity to inhibit the neutrophil superoxide anion and total reactive oxygen species generation, and improved its anti-inflammatory effect in vivo by decreasing the effective BdE dose by nearly sixfold. The same liposome type lowered the effective dose of caffeic acid by nearly sixteenfold. Therefore, incorporation of BdE into phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol liposomes improves its anti-inflammatory effect.     

Synthesis of dendritic bisphosphonates as bone targeting ligands

A dendritic bisphosphonate carrying three bisphosphonate (BP) units in close proximity was designed as a ligand to conjugate large therapeutic molecules for their bone selective delivery. The Bu₃P-catalyzed conjugate addition of nitromethane to vinylidene bisphosphonate was effective to construct a quaternary carbon center carrying BP units. Owing to multivalent interactions, the dendritic bisphosphonate showed considerable affinity for the bone mineral hydroxyapatite even in the presence of a competitor, demonstrating potential as a bone targeting ligand.     

Biphenyl ether and biphenyl quinolizidine lactone alkaloids from Heimia salicifolia

Three new biphenyl ether quinolizidine lactone alkaloids (1–3) and 13 new biphenyl quinolizidine lactone alkaloids (4–16) were isolated from Heimia salicifolia (Lythraceae) together with seven known alkaloids. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses and chemical conversions.     

Error Correcting Sequence and Projective De Bruijn Graph

Let X be a finite set of q elements, and n, K, d be integers. A subset C ⊂ X ⁿ is an (n, K, d) error-correcting code, if #(C) = K and its minimum distance is d. We define an (n, K, d) error-correcting sequence over X as a periodic sequence {a _i } _i=0,1,... (a _i ∈ X) with period K, such that the set of all consecutive n-tuples of this sequence form an (n, K, d) error-correcting code over X. Under a moderate conjecture on the existence of some type of primitive polynomials, we prove that there is a error correcting sequence, such that its code-set is the q-ary Hamming code with 0 removed, for q > 2 being a prime power. For the case q = 2, under a similar conjecture, we prove that there is a error-correcting sequence, such that its code-set supplemented with 0 is the subset of the binary Hamming code [2 ^m  − 1, 2 ^m  − 1 − m, 3] obtained by requiring one specified coordinate being 0. Production of a positron microprobe using a transmission remoderator.

A production method for a positron microprobe using a beta+-decay radioisotope (22Na) source has been investigated. When a magnetically guided positron beam was extracted from the magnetic field, the combination of an extraction coil and a magnetic lens enabled us to focus the positron beam by a factor of 10 and to achieve a high transport efficiency (71%). A 150-nm-thick Ni(100) thin film was mounted at the focal point of the magnetic lens and was used as a remoderator for brightness enhancement in a transmission geometry. The remoderated positrons were accelerated by an electrostatic lens and focused on the target by an objective magnetic lens. As a result, a 4-mm-diameter positron beam could be transformed into a microprobe of 60 microm or less with 4.2% total efficiency. The S parameter profile obtained by a single-line scan of a test specimen coincided well with the defect distribution. This technique for a positron microprobe is available to an accelerator-based high-intensity positron source and allows 3-dimensional vacancy-type defect analysis and a positron source for a transmission positron microscope.     

Asymmetric total syntheses of two phlegmarine-type alkaloids, lycoposerramines-V and -W, newly isolated from Lycopodium serratum

Two new Phlegmarine-type alkaloids, lycoposerramines-V and -W, were isolated from Lycopodium serratum, and their structures including the absolute configuration were established by asymmetric total synthesis involving such key steps as Johnson-Claisen rearrangement, asymmetric allylation, and ring-closing metathesis (RCM)- or SmI(2)-mediated stereoselective piperidine ring construction.
