Alkyl metal asymmetric reduction. 11. The reaction of α,β-unsaturated ketones with β-branched trialkylaluminium compounds.

The reduction of a series of α,β-unsaturated ketones has been studied under various experimental conditions, by using β-branched trialkylalanes. Asymmetric induction phenomena are observed when optically active trialkylalanes are used.     

On the biological importance of the hydrogen bond breaking potency of fluorocarbons

Fluorocarbons containing higher halogens have the potency of breaking certain hydrogen bonds in solutions. The relative strength of this potency varies in the series F < Cl < Br < I and the presence of hydrogen atoms in the fluorocarbon increases it. There is a striking parallelism between the hydrogen bond breaking and the anaesthetic potency of these molecules. It is suggested that the breaking of hydrogen bonds is an important step in the mechanism of anaesthesia.     

Total synthesis of (+)-aspidospermidine: a new strategy for the enantiospecific synthesis of aspidosperma alkaloids

A new strategy was developed for the enantiospecific synthesis of aspidosperma alkaloids. The key steps involve a novel ketene-lactonization reaction of a chiral vinyl sulfoxide to efficiently set up the quaternary carbon center, and a tandem Michael addition-alkylation reaction sequence to form the polycyclic core structure. This new strategy was employed in the total synthesis of natural product (+)-aspidospermidine.     

Über einige neue Bispirane

We have obtained four new bispirane systems in which both spiroatoms are vicinal atoms in cyclopropane or cyclobutane rings and in which the heterocyclic component has the basic structure of 1,4-dioxep-2-ene. We have shown that from two possibilities (bispiran, propellan) the general reaction leads only to a bispiran system. To the bispiran2 exhibiting the highest hyperchromism we ascribed the bispirocoplanar conformation (Fig. 1).

A kinetic approach to homogeneous Ziegler type polymerization. Steady state

In this paper we present a kinetic approach to the analysis of steady-state homogeneous Ziegler-Natta polymerization activity data. The influence of the number of monomeric species that are coordinated to the active site on the apparent rate law is discussed and the equations are fitted to the experimental results.

Oxidation of organophosphorus compounds—IV : Kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of diarylphosphine oxides by t-butyl hydroperoxide,hydrogen peroxide and p-nitroperoxybenzoic acid in alkaline media

The influence of OH⁻ concentration, in the solvent medium dioxane-water 40:60 at 25·0, on the oxidation rates of diphenylphosphine oxide (DPPO) by t-BuOOH, H₂O₂ and p-nitroperoxybenzoic acid, and of bis-p-tolylphosphine oxide by t-BuOOH has been investigated. For the oxidation of the phosphorus substrates by the hydroperoxides above, the rate law found (R = k₂″[Ar₂PHO] [ROO⁻]) differs from the rate law confirmed to hold for the oxidation of DPPO by peroxyacids in alkaline media, i.e.: R = (k₂″ + k₃[OH−])[Ar₂PHO] [RCO₃⁻]. This is interpreted on the basis of one common reaction mechanism involving formation of an intermediate of similar structure, wherein a change in the rate controlling step is likely to occur on passing from p-O₂N·C₆H₄CO₃⁻ to t-BuOO⁻. In the same solvent medium, pK_a′ values for t-BuOOH and H₂O₂ have been estimated.     

LIGHT-INDUCED CHEMOTACTIC REACTIONS IN THE DINOFLAGELLATE, Peridiniopsis berolinensis

Abstract The photosensitizer riboflavin induces accumulation of the colorless flagellate Peridiniopsis berolinensis in a light field at low photon fluence rates but dispersal from a light field at high photon fluence rates. The wavelength dependence of the accumulation resembles the absorption spectrum of riboflavin in the visible range. The photodynamic effects are caused by a positive or negative chemotactic response to photoproducts in the medium which are produced by photochemical reactions of the dye.     

Application of fluorescence reactions in the ring oven segment technique

Summary The ring oven segment technique already described earlier has been applied to the determination of ng- tog-amounts of organic and inorganic substances using fluorescence reactions. The methods proposed here are based either on self-fluorescence or on appearance or disappearance of fluorescence following a chemical reaction.

Anwendung von Fluoreszenzreaktionen in der Ringofen-Segmenttechnik

Zusammenfassung Die bereits früher beschriebene Ringofen-Segmenttechnik wurde auf die Bestimmung organischer und anorganischer Substanzen im ng- bisg-Bereich mit Hilfe von Fluoreszenzreaktionen angewendet. Die hier vorgeschlagenen Methoden beruhen entweder auf Eigenfluoreszenz oder aber auf der Bildung bzw. dem Verschwinden von Fluoreszenz nach einer chemischen Reaktion.

     

Eptastigmine,nicotinamide and nicotinic acid determination using an inhibition enzyme sensor; application to pharmaceutical analysis

An enzyme inhibition biosensor, developed in our laboratory and previously used for the analysis of compounds with anticholinesterase activity (e.g. physostigmine, neostigmine, pyridostigmine nicotine and organophosphorus compounds) has now been tested for the analysis of another recently synthesized cholinesterase inhibitor, i.e. eptastigmine. In addition nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, although displaying weaker inhibition properties, were also tested in pharmaceutical products using the same inhibition enzyme sensor. The biosensor consisted of a hydrogen peroxide amperometric electrode coupled to a functionalised nylon membrane chemically bonding both the enzymes butyrylcholinesterase and choline oxidase; a butyrylcholine standard solution in glycine buffer acted as substrate. The response of the system to all the inhibitors considered was characterised completely and the analysis of several pharmaceutical formulations containing nicotinamide or nicotinic acid was also performed.
