Vapor-liquid equilibrium data at 25°C for six binary systems containing methyl acetate or methanol,with dichloromethane,chloroform, or 1,2-trans-dichloroethylene

Isothermal vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data, at 25° C were determined by a saturation method for each of the six methanol or methyl acetate binary systems with dichloromethane, chloroform, and 1,2-trans-dichloroethylene. The experimental data satisfy the Redlich-Kister consistency test, and were correlated with five Gibbs free energy models. All the binary mixtures of methanol with the chlorinated compounds exhibit strong positive deviations from ideality while the mixtures of methyl acetate with the chlorinated compounds present negative deviations from ideal behavior.Communicated at the Festsymposium celebrating Dr. Henry V. Theoretical study of cyclization of 2′-hydroxychalcone

The isomerization mechanism of 2′(OH)chalcone (1) in flavanone (2) was studied. The calculations were performed with the semiempirical method AM1, using totally optimized molecular geometries. A 6-step mechanism including several equilibrium states was proposed. It was concluded that: (a) At the conformational equilibrium of 1 there could be 43.9% of s-cis conformer; (b) The acid dissociation of 1 trans-s-trans is considerable; (c) The E_E, ΔH_f and net charges show that the rotation of ring A of 1 and the formation of ring C of 2 occurs without greater impairments; (d) Although the keto structure is the most stable one, the enolate of 2 is present in the reaction medium; (e) The conversion of enol of 2 in the keto form would be the limiting step of the analyzed isomerization rate.     

Asymptotic stability of semigroups associated with linear weak dissipative systems with memory

We study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a class of linear dissipative integral differential equations. We show in the abstract setting a necessary and sufficient condition to get an exponential decay of the solution. In the case of the lack of exponential decay, we find the polynomial rate of decay of the solution. Some examples are given.     

Interpolation on spherical geodesic grids: A comparative study

Most operational models in atmospheric physics, meteorology and climatology nowadays adopt spherical geodesic grids and require “ad hoc” developed interpolation procedures. The author does a comparison between chosen representatives of linear, distance-based and cubic interpolation schemes outlining their advantages and drawbacks in this specific application field. Numerical experiments on a standard test problem, while confirming a good performance of linear and distance-based schemes in a single interpolation step, also show their minor accuracy with respect to the cubic scheme in the more realistic simulation of advection of a meteorological field.     

Harmonic and intermodulation distortion modeling in IM-DD multi-band radio over fiber links exploiting injection locked lasers

A comprehensive numerical tool has been developed for the evaluation of the performances of Radio over Fiber (RoF) links intended for wireless signal distribution.At the transmitter end an appropriate set of rate equations allows to model the optical source as a solitary laser or as an appropriately injection locked laser. The optical channel is modeled putting into account the combined effect of fiber dispersion, laser source non ideal performances (e.g. non-linear effects, frequency chirp), and quadratic detection of the receiving photodiode. The simulation model developed can be a useful tool at the design stage allowing a preliminary evaluation of the characteristics of real RoF links.     

Deformations of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subvarieties of pn

We show that every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay two-codimensional subscheme ofP ⁿ can be deformed to a reduced union of two-codimensional linear subvarieties. This problem (classical for curves with the name of Zeuthen problem) was solved for curves by F.Gaeta.     

6-Thia-1-aza-5λ5-phosphabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-3-ene und Isothiocyanatophosphin-sulfide aus (Methylidenamino)phosphinen,Schwefelkohlenstoff und Acetylen- oder Ethylen-Derivaten

6-Thia-l-aza-5λ⁵-phosphabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-3-enes and Isothiocyanatophosphine-sulfides from (Methylidenamino)phosphines, Carbon Disulfide, and Acetylene- or Ethylene Derivatives (Methylidenamino)phosphines react with carbon disulfide to 1,3,2-thiazaphosphete derivatives 2 . Acetylenedicarboxylates give with 2 6-thia-l-aza-5λ⁵-phosphabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-3-enes 4a , b , and acrylates yield isothio-cyanatophosphin-sulfides 5a – c . The structures of 4a and 5a are proven by an X-ray diffraction analysis.     

A highly active fungal β-glucosidase

A highly active thermostable β-glucosidase was purified to homogeneity from a strain ofTrichoderma sp. The enzyme was an extracellular glycoprotein and showed hydrolytic activity toward several β-glucosides. Cellobiose was found to be the substrate of choice for this enzyme. This finding could suggest future technological applications of the purified protein.     

Limonene concentration in lemon (Citrus volkameriana) peel oil as a function of ripeness

The dependence of the limonene content of lemon (Citrus volkameriana) peel oil on the degree of ripeness of the fruit has been studied by using steam distillation and cold pressing to extract the oils from lemon fruit peel at different stages of maturation (green, greenish-yellow, and yellow-orange peel coloration). Samples of essential oils were analyzed by high resolution GC and GC-MS, using tetradecane as internal standard for quantitation. Forty components were detected; thirty eight were positively identified by comparison of their mass spectra (El, 70 eV) and Kováts retention indexes (determined using a non-logarithmic scale on capillary columns coated with both polar (DB-Wax) and non-polar (DB-1) stationary phases) with those of standards and with data reported in the literature. The limonene concentration reached a maximum level of 79.4% when the fruit was in the intermediate maturation stage characterized by greenish-yellow coloration.
