Domestic households account for a significant portion of energy consumption and carbon emissions in the United Kingdom. Gains in energy and resource efficiency are undermined by the continuing rise in consumption. A multiutility service company (MUSCo) could enable households to make efficiency improvements through energy technologies and demand management, thus reducing overall consumption. We present a system dynamics model for the domestic energy demand and supply system in the United Kingdom, in which MUSCos compete with traditional utility providers. An extensive study of the time dependence of DNA wrapping in single-walled nanotube (SWNT) dispersions has been carried out, revealing a number of unusual phenomena. SWNTs were dispersed in water with salmon testes DNA and monitored over a three-month period. Between 20 and 50 days after the sample was first prepared, the SWNT photoluminescence (PL) intensity was observed to increase by a factor of 50. This increase was accompanied by a considerable sharpening of the van Hove absorption peaks. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images showed the progressive formation of a coating of DNA on the walls of the nanotubes over the three-month period. HRTEM and circular dichroism spectroscopy studies showed that the improvement in both the NIR PL intensity and the van Hove absorption peaks coincided with the completion of a monolayer coating of DNA on the SWNT walls. HRTEM images clearly showed the DNA wrapping helically around the SWNTs in a surprisingly ordered fashion. We suggest that the initial quenching of NIR photoluminescence and broadening of absorption peaks is related to the presence of protonated surface oxides on the nanotubes. The presence of an ordered DNA coating on the nanotube walls mediates both deprotonation and removal of the surface oxides. An extensive DNA coating is required to substantially restore the photoluminescence, and thus, the luminescence switch-on and subsequent saturation indicate the completion of the DNA-wrapping process. The temperature dependence of the PL switch-on, and thus of the wrapping process, was investigated by measuring as functions of temperature both the time before PL switch-on and the time required for the PL intensity to saturate. This allowed the calculation of the activation energies for both the process preceding PL switch-on and the process limiting the rise of PL intensity, which were found to be 31 and 41 kJ mol (-1), respectively. The associated entropies of activation were -263 and -225 J mol (-1) K (-1), respectively. These negative activation entropies suggest that the rate-limiting step is characterized by a change in the system from a less-ordered to a more-ordered state, consistent with the formation of an ordered DNA coating.  相似文献

Pattern formation in a nonlinear damped Mathieu-type partial differential equation defined on one space variable is analyzed. A bifurcation analysis of an averaged equation is performed and compared to full numerical simulations. Parametric resonance leads to periodically varying patterns whose spatial structure is determined by amplitude and detuning of the periodic forcing. At onset, patterns appear subcritically and attractor crowding is observed for large detuning. The evolution of patterns under the increase of the forcing amplitude is studied. It is found that spatially homogeneous and temporally periodic solutions occur for all detuning at a certain amplitude of the forcing. Although the system is dissipative, spatial solitons are found representing domain walls creating a phase jump of the solutions. The mode-mode coupling approximation (MMCA) is applied to describe the behavior of the reduced viscosity ηr from ternary mixtures of two weakly charged polyelectrolytes in solution. Similarly (ε = +1) as well as oppositely (ε = −1) weakly charged polyions are discussed in this work. The variation of ηr with the total polyelectrolyte concentration CT exhibits a peak. The position and the height of this peak show for a given concentration of added salt CS a sensitive variation with: the charge parameters (degrees of ionization) f1 and f2 of both polyelectrolytes, the proportion of polyelectrolyte 1 within the mixture (x = C1/CT) and the Flory interaction parameter χF between monomeric units of different species. This calculation is presented within the framework of the Rouse model where no hydrodynamic interactions are taken into account.  相似文献

Oxidative stress is a key underlying factor in cognitive decline and atherosclerosis. Oxidative stress occurs at the cellular level with an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species and a deficiency in antioxidants. Mounting evidence suggests that berry flavonoids may promote cellular health by exerting antioxidant properties. Black currant and various berry extracts were tested in microglia (BV-2) and cardiomyocyte (HL-1) cell lines to study their biological effects. The principal ingredients in black currant and cranberry extract–delphinidin 3-rutinoside (D3R) and cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G), were also assessed. A menadione-induced oxidative stressor was used, and its output was quantified to detect oxidative stress (CellROXTM). Black currant extract had similar antioxidant effects as N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in HL-1 cells with regard to cellular protection, whereas cranberry extract was ineffective. In contrast, cranberry extract was comparable in effectiveness to black currant extract in BV-2 cells. D3R and C3G also reduced oxidative stress similarly to whole berry extracts, which indicates that these ingredients may confer the antioxidant effects of berries. Black currant and cranberry extracts inhibit oxidative stress in microglial and cardiomyocyte cell lines. Black currant extract was more effective in reducing oxidative stress in the HL-1 cells, whereas cranberry extract was comparable in reducing oxidative stress in the BV-2 cells. The results suggest that berry flavonoids exert neuro- and cardioprotective effects.  相似文献
