Magnetic properties on holmium iron garnet in high magnetic field. Optical absorption spectra in the infra-red region

On single crystals of holmium iron garnet (HoIG), magnetic properties have been studied in magnetic field up to 150kOe applied parallel to the main crystallographic directions in the 4.2–300K temperature range. Above 130 K, the magnetization is isotropic and linear magnetic field dependent as previously found in polycrystals and predicted by Néel's ferrimagnetic theory. Nevertheless the paramagnetic Curie temperature is much higher than the polycrystal value. Below 130K, due to the onset of the umbrella structure, the ferrite magnetization presents a non linear field variation with [111] as easy direction. The field evolutions of the anisotropy constants (K ₁ andK ₂) were calculated. Optical absorption measurements of both 5₈5I ₆ and 5I ₈5I ₇ transitions are reported and compared to the results of the literature in terms of inequivalent magnetic sites.     

Le systeme binaire fluorure de rubidium-fluorure d'hydrogene

Résumé Le diagramme des équilibres liquide-solide du système fluorure de rubidium-fluorure d'hydrogène a été tracé dans sa totalité. Six espèces stables se manifestent RbF · nHF (avecn=7, 4, 3, 2, 3/2, 1). Un septième composé dont la composition probable est 2RbF · 5HF se manifeste à l'état métastable.

Liquid-solid equilibria are studied in the complete binary system RbF-HF. Several compounds are observed: RbF ·nHF withn=7, 4, 3, 2, 3/2 and 1. A seventh compound, 2RbF · 5HF, is detected as an unstable form.

Trichloroethylene Combustion in a Submerged Thermal Plasma: Results and Chemical Kinetics Model

This work deals with incineration of organic liquid wastes using an oxygen thermal plasma jet, submerged in water. The results presented here concern incineration of trichloroethylene (TCE). During a trial run, the CO₂ and CO content in the exhaust gas is continuously measured; samples taken periodically from the solution are analyzed by appropriate methods: total organic carbon and chlorine content are measured. Process efficiency during tests with a few L/h of TCE is given by the mineralization rate. The trapping rate of chlorine as HCl is near 100 %. The TCE destruction and removal efficiency, measured by MS/GC, is better than 99.9999 %. A simplified kinetic model of gas quenching was constructed from a single-phase plug-flow reactor model taking into account 14 species and 34 reactions. It satisfies the requirements of heat balance and major components analysis, and reveals the major role of the OH radical on the concentrations of CO as well as HCl and/or Cl₂ in the off-gas stream.     

Proton-electron elastic scattering and the proton charge radius

It is suggested that proton elastic scattering on atomic electrons allows a precise measurement of the proton charge radius. The main advantage is that inverse kinematics allows one to access with a huge cross section very small values of transferred momenta, up to four orders of magnitude smaller than the ones presently achieved.     

High magnetic field properties of mixed terbium-yttrium ferrite garnets

Magnetization measurements in d.c. magnetic fields up to 180 kOe have been performed on polycrystalline specimens and on single crystals of mixed terbium-yttrium iron garnets: Tb _x Y_3–x Fe₅O₁₂ in the 4.2–300 K temperature range. On polycrystals (x=2.5; 2; 1; 0.37) the concentration dependence of both compensation point and spontaneous magnetization has been determined. In the single crystals (x=2; 1; 0.37) a strong magnetic anisotropy has been observed with a change of the easy direction of magnetization from [111] to [100] whenx decreases; abrupt field-induced transitions have been observed at low temperatures when the external field is applied along the [100] direction.     

Exclusion process and droplet shape

We use a mathematical isomorphism between the one-dimensional exclusion process and the two-dimensional stochastic Ising model in the low-temperature limit to describe the typical instantaneous shape of a supercritical droplet. We derive, specifically, the exact asymptotic distribution of the boundaries of a (+1) spin region, confined to Z ₊ ² and subjected to a positive magnetic field. In an appropriate scaling, the boundary distribution converges to a deterministic continuum limit.On leave at the EPFL, CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland.
