This paper presents a new method for determining the critical threshold values at which both homogeneous and roll-type instabilities may appear when thin layers of nematic liquid crystal are subjected to Couette flow. The anisotropic axis of the material is initially uniformly aligned parallel to the axial direction and the effect of a stabilising, axially oriented, uniform magnetic field is allowed for in calculations. Carrying out a linear stability analysis of the continuum equations, we employ a Fourier series method to derive an expression for determining the critical shear rate at which instability occurs. Thresholds for both homogeneous and roll instabilities are obtained and their variation with rotation rate and applied magnetic field strength is examined for the material MBBA.  相似文献

Both in New Zealand and Chile there exist important forest industries based mostly on pine plantations. The management of harvesting requires a series of activities such as building access roads, harvesting with skidders on flat terrain and cable logging for steep terrain, transportation from forest origins to destinations, such as a port, pulp plant and sawmills.These harvesting activities imply some potentially harmful environmental impacts such as water sedimentation, erosion and loss of scenic beauty. This has led to the proposal of several mitigating actions, such as creating riparian strips along rivers, avoiding the use of heavy machinery on fragile soils and minimizing road building.The degree of implementation of these mitigating actions differs in Chile and New Zealand. In New Zealand, the 1991 Resource Management Act regulated the implementation of environmental protection measures. In Chile a series of such measures have been implemented, but a set of definite regulations has not been defined yet and there is a need to develop an economic evaluation of the implementation of environmental measures in terms of reduced timber production and high harvesting costs, together with the benefits to the environment. To support decisions at tactical and operational levels, mathematical models have been developed both in Chile and New Zealand and are being used successfully by the timber industries. These models can be modified to consider diverse environmental protection measures. We analyze the implementation of these modifications and how the new models can help evaluate the economic impact of the protection measures. We show some preliminary results.  相似文献

The incorporation of poly(1,4‐butylene adipate) (PBA) and its crystallization behavior within poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVF2) spherulites in miscible PVF2/PBA blends have been further studied with small‐angle X‐ray synchrotron scattering (SAXS). The incorporation of PBA into the PVF2 interlamellar region was found to be dependent on the PVF2 crystallization conditions. In our previous work, where the blends were crystallized by a one‐step quenching process directly from 190 (a single‐phase region) to 20 °C (a three‐phase region), the transition from PBA inclusion in the PVF2 interlamellar region to interlamellar exclusion occurred at a PBA weight fraction of ∼ 0.5. In this case, where the blends were first quenched from 190 (a single‐phase region) to 130 °C (a two‐phase region) and then further quenched to 20 °C (a three‐phase region), the transition occurred at a PBA weight fraction of less than 0.3. That is, when a blend is crystallized under different conditions, different amounts of the PBA component are incorporated into the PVF2 interlamellar phase. The thickness of the PVF2 interlamellar phase, in turn, may affect the PBA crystalline structure in the interlamellar region. Time‐resolved SAXS was used to probe the crystallization dynamics of both PVF2 and PBA components in a blend containing 60 wt % PBA. The blend was quenched from the single‐phase region at 190 to 130 °C to crystallize the PVF2 component and was then further quenched to 20 °C to crystallize the PBA component. This study, together with our earlier results, shows that the time dependence of the PVF2 crystallization rate and crystalline lamellar thickness is a function of the PBA content in the blend. The glass‐transition temperature of the blend and the PBA diffusion process are the two dominant factors that control the PVF2 crystallization dynamics. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Fibrillar crystals have been prepared by the crystallization of isotactic polystyrene from stirred solutions in 1,3,5-trimethylben-zene and cyclohexanol. Similar microfibrils have been prepared in the nascent state by the polymerization of styrene in 1,3,5-trimethyl-benzene with a heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalyst. The microfibrils varied in width between 140 and 250 Å and were characterized by periodic lamellar overgrowths which were believed to give rise to a discrete X-ray reflection having a d-spacing of 90 A. Thermal analysis suggested that high growth temperatures favored greater crystal perfection. During crystallization from stirred cyclohexanol solutions, a fractionation of high molecular weight chains occurred which was more efficient at higher crystallization temperatures. In comparison to crystallizations under quiescent conditions, a marked facility of the crystallization process was observed in the formation of stirrer-crystallized and Ziegler-Natta polystyrene. The ease of crystallization of the shear-regenerated and nascent microfibrils has been related to a reduction in the free energy of nucleation. Mechanisms have been proposed to account for a favored nucleation process.  相似文献

Small-angle X-ray diffraction, supplemented by electron microscopy, has been used to probe the morphology of bulk crystallized polyoxymethylene (POM), isotactic polypropylene (PP), isotactic polystyrene (PS), and 1,4-trans-β-polyisoprene (PIP). Samples crystallized isothermally from the melt as well as annealed samples were investigated.

The temperature range covered extended from 0[ddot]C to near the melting point. It was found that POM gave rise to three discrete small-angle scattering maxima and that PP gave two, whereas PS and PIP had only one. Attempts at correlating the long spacings corresponding to these maxima with readily identifiable morphological features were not entirely successful. Using the long spacing data in equations based on the Lauritzen and Hoffman theory of polymer crystallization, interfacial free energies were calculated. The values obtained are lower than those reported by other authors using radial spherulitic growth rate data on the same polymers. Various interpretations of the multiple long spacings are examined in the light of the newly acquired information.  相似文献

The molecular weights and molecular weight distributions of the alkali-soluble degradation products from the ozonolysis of spruce periodate and cuoxam lignins and spruce protolignin have been studied by gel permeation chromatography and ultracentrifugation. The bimodal distribution previously reported for soluble lignins was found to be an artifact; the correct distribution has one broad lowmolecular-weight maximum, with a long tail extending toward the high-molecular-weight end of the distribution. Weight-average molecuar weights of the alkali-soluble degradation products, obtained by sedimentation equilibrium measurements, increased with time of ozonization up to about 15 min. Beyond this time fragmentation of the partly degraded products results in a decrease in molecular weight. Lignin degradation followed the pattern expected of a three-dimensional, infinite-network polymer gel undergoing breakdown. Based on the molecular weights and the molecular weight distributions, a random stepwise mechanism is suggested as the mode of lignin degradation by ozone.  相似文献

The flow field in an electrically driven jet has been examined and quantitatively analyzed. Using a model fluid, the nature of the streamlines and magnitude of the stream velocities were investigated with the aid of tracer particle photography. It was found that the velocity field is not purely extensional, but contains rotational components as well. Furthermore, the only portion of the jet completely free of any rotational component is the region about the symmetry axis. The extensional strain rate along the symmetry axis increases rapidly with the applied electric field intensity and can attain values in excess of 50 sec?1. This suggests that it might be possible to draw continuous oriented fibers from polymer melts by this technique if the jet can be operated at sufficiently high electric field intensity.  相似文献
