High-speed gel-permeation chromatography

To establish optimum operating conditions for high-speed gel-permeation chromatography (GPC), the effects of column packing particle size, solvent flow rate, and column length on the separation efficiency have been investigated by using monodisperse polystyrene samples and polystyrene gel columns (TSK-GEL column, Type-H). Decreasing the particle size of the column packing reduces the time required to obtain a given resolution. Monodisperse polystyrene standards were measured under the optimum operating conditions established (gel particle size 5 μ, column length 2 ft, flow rate 2.5 ml/min). The molecular weight distribution of a polymer mixture was determined in less than 10 min with the same accuracy as by the conventional GPC. Such short analysis time enables one to use GPC for in-plant quality control.     

Some new consistency relations connecting spline values at mesh and mid points

This paper is concerned with polynomial splines on a uniform mesh. Linear dependence relations connecting spline values at mesh and mid points are developed.     

X-ray photoelectron spectra of ylide—TCNQ charge-transfer complexes

Charge-transfer complexes of TCNQ with ylides, new-type donors, were synthesized and the X-ray photoelectron spectra of these complexes were measured. A broad satellite caused by TCNQ radicals observed.     

E 6,7,8 magnetized extra-dimensional models

We study 10D super Yang–Mills theory with the gauge groups E ₆, E ₇ and E ₈. We consider the torus/orbifold compactification with magnetic fluxes and Wilson lines. They lead to 4D interesting models with three families of quarks and leptons, whose profiles in extra dimensions are quasi-localized because of magnetic fluxes.     

On tame pro-p Galois groups over basic {\mathbb{Z}_p}-extensions

For a prime number p and a finite set S of prime numbers congruent to 1 modulo p, we consider the Galois group of the maximal pro-p-extension unramified outside S over the ${\mathbb Z_p}$ -extension of the rational number field. In this paper, we give a family of S for which the Galois group is a metacyclic pro-p group with an application to Greenberg’s conjecture.     

Storage and retrieval of a squeezed vacuum

Storage and retrieval of a squeezed vacuum was successfully demonstrated using electromagnetically induced transparency. The squeezed vacuum pulse having a temporal width of 930 ns was incident on the laser cooled 87Rb atoms with an intense control light in a coherent state. When the squeezed vacuum pulse was slowed and spatially compressed in the cold atoms, the control light was switched off. After 3 mus of storage, the control light was switched on again, and the squeezed vacuum was retrieved, as was confirmed using the time-domain homodyne method.     

Chemiluminescence change of polyphenol dendrimers with different core molecules

Second generation polyphenol dendrimers (PDs) with different core molecules were synthesized, and their chemiluminescence (CL) was measured by reacting the PDs with H2O2 under alkaline conditions. All of the PDs showed a strong CL, more than 120-fold greater than that of gallic acid. Various CL intensities of the PDs were obtained using different core molecules in the PDs. The distance between each dendron in the PD structure is crucial in the PD CL intensity.     

Asymmetric Michael addition of a recyclable chiral amine: inversion of stereoselectivity caused by the difference of ethereal solvents

The Michael addition of a chiral amine [(-)- 6] to alpha,beta-unsaturated esters ( 4) was attained and the stereoselectivity was inverted by changing the solvent from diethyl ether to tetrahydrofuran when alpha,beta-unsaturated esters having an aromatic ring at the beta-position were employed. In addition, the chiral auxiliary in the Michael adducts ( 9A) was facilely removed with N-iodosuccinimide to afford beta-amino esters ( 10A) and 2-methoxy- d-bornylaldehyde ( 11), which can be reclaimed to the chiral amine ( 6) by reductive amination.     

Catalytic enantioselective organozinc addition toward optically active tertiary alcohol synthesis

A highly enantioselective organozinc (R₂Zn) addition to a series of aldehydes and ketones was developed based on conjugate Lewis acid–Lewis base catalysis. Optically active secondary and tertiary alcohols were obtained in high yields with high enantioselectivities without Ti(IV) compounds. Bifunctional chiral 3,3′‐diphosphoryl‐BINOL ligands were designed and prepared through a phospho‐Fries rearrangement as a key step. On the other hand, bifunctional chiral phosphoramide ligands were designed and prepared from L ‐valine. Mechanistic studies were performed by X‐ray analyses of Zn(II) cluster and chiral ligands, a ³¹P NMR experiment on Zn(II) complexes, and stoichiometric reactions with some chiral or achiral Zn(II) complexes to propose a transition state assembly that includes monomeric active intermediates. © 2008 The Japan Chemical Journal Forum and Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
