Structural analysis of the N-linked oligosaccharides from human urinary trypsin inhibitor.

The N-linked oligosaccharides from human urinary trypsin inhibitor were purified and their structures were investigated by compositional analysis, the two-dimensional sugar map method and 500 MHz 1H-NMR. The results revealed that they were composed of disialosyl, monosialosyl and asialosyl oligosaccharides, which have the common biantennary core structure; Gal1-4GlcNAc1-2Man1-3(Gal1-4GlcNAc1-2Man1-6)M an1-4GlcNAc1-4GlcNAc.     

Intramolecular nucleophilic carbonyl trapping of alpha-ketenyl radicals by an amino group

Free-radical carbonylation of omega-alkynylamines with tributyltin hydride gives a mixture of alpha-methylene lactams and alpha-stannylmethylene lactams. Nucleophilic addition of an internal amino group to the carbonyl group of alpha-ketenyl radicals is proposed as the cyclization step. The subsequent unusual 1,4-H shift from the resulting 1-hydroxyallyl radical, followed by elimination of the beta-tributyltin radical leads to the formation of alpha-methylene lactams.     

Low-pass and high-pass filters using coaxial-type dielectric resonators

This paper proposes new low-pass and high-pass filters using coaxial-type dielectric resonators. The low-pass filter has a LC-type circuit structure and is composed of three inductances and two resonance circuits. The resonance circuits are the open-ended coaxial-type dielectric resonators whose length is g/4. The high-pass filter has a CL-type circuit structure. Two high-pass filters are described, one of them is composed of three capacitances andtwo resonance circuits, the other is composed of five capacitances and four resonance circuits. The operating frequency range of the low-pass filter is 0.13–0.9 GHz and the cutoffency is 900 MHz, and the insertion loss is 0.3 dB. The corresponding quantities of the high-pass filter are 0.9–2.5 GHz, 900 MHz, and 0.3 dB, respectively.     

Highly sensitive spectrophotometric determination of osmium(VIII) with pyrogallolphthalein and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of Brij 35

Summary A highly sensitive determination of osmium(VIII) is based on the decolouring reaction with pyrogallolphthalein (gallein) and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of Brij 35. Beer's law was obeyed in the range of 0–0.5 ng of osmium(VIII) per 10 ml and the apparent decomposed absorption coefficient was 2.5×10⁹ l mol^–1 cm^–1 at 535 nm.Application of xanthene derivatives in analytical chemistry. Validation of the CALUX bioassay for the screening of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs in retail fish

The chemical-activated luciferase expression (CALUX) assay is a reporter gene assay that detects dioxin-like compounds based on their ability to activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and thus expression of the reporter gene. In this paper, the CALUX assay was examined for its application in the screening of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dioxin-like PCBs) in retail fish. The sample extracts were cleaned up on a sulfuric acid-silica gel column followed by an activated carbon column, and the AhR activity of the separated PCDD/F and dioxin-like PCB fractions was determined using the assay. The quantitative limit for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) was 0.98 pg ml(-1) (0.19 pg assay(-1) in the standard curve, corresponding to 0.16 pg g(-1) of CALUX-based toxic equivalency (2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents) in the tested sample. Recovery tests in which dioxins were added to fish samples resulted in acceptable recoveries (77-117%). The CALUX assay performed well in the analysis of dioxins in fish samples and a comparative study revealed a strong correlation between the CALUX assay and high-resolution gas chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis for the determination of PCDD/Fs (r = 0.89) and dioxin-like PCBs (r = 0.91) in retail fish (n = 22). These data revealed that the CALUX assay would be a useful screening method for PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs in retail fish.     

Alloyed Tetranuclear Metal Chains of Pd4−nPtn (n=0–3) Scaffolded by a New Linear Tetraphosphine Containing a PNP Bridge

A new linear tetraphosphine containing a PNP phosphazane bridge, rac-bis[(diphenylphosphinomethyl)phenylphosphino]phenylamine (rac-dpmppan), was synthesized and utilized to support a series of Pd/Pt mixed metal tetranuclear chains, [Pd_4−nPt_n(μ-rac-dpmppan)₂(XylNC)₂](PF₆)₂ (XylNC=xylyl isocyanide; n=0: Pd₄ ( 1 ), 1: PtPd₃ ( 2 ), 2: PtPd₂Pt ( 3 ), 2: Pt₂Pd₂ ( 4 ), 3: Pt₂PdPt ( 5 )), in which the number and positions of additional Pt atoms were successfully controlled depending on the respective synthetic procedures using transformations from 1 to 3 through 2 and from 4 to 5 by redox-coupled exchange reactions. The ³¹P{¹H} NMR and ESI mass spectra and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed almost identical tetranuclear structures, with slight contraction of metal-metal bonds according to incorporation of Pt atoms. The electronic absorption spectra of 1 – 5 exhibited characteristic bands at 635–510 nm with an energy propensity depending on the number and positions of Pt centres, which were assigned to HOMO (dσ*σσ*) to LUMO (dσ*σ*σ*) transition by theoretical calculations. The present results demonstrated that the electronic structures of Pd/Pt mixed-metal tetranuclear complexes are finely tuned as orbital-overlapping alloyed metal chains by atomically precise Pt incorporation in the Pd₄ chain.     

Cyclization from Higher Excited States of Diarylethenes Having a Substituted Azulene Ring

The cyclization reaction of diarylethenes having an azulene ring occurs only via higher excited states. Novel diarylethenes having an azulene ring with a strong donor or acceptor were synthesized and examined in these reactions. A derivative having an electron-donating 1,3-benzodithiol-2-ylidenemethyl group at the 1-position of the azulene ring showed photochromism, whereas neither a derivative having a π-conjugated electron-donating group at the 3-position of the azulene ring nor derivatives having a π-conjugated electron-withdrawing group at the 1- or 3-position of the azulene ring showed any photochromism. The photoreactivities of these compounds were explained by calculating forces and bond orders on the excited states using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT.     

Chiral Dinuclear EuIII,TbIII, and YIII Complexes Supported by P-Stereogenic Linear Tetraphosphine Tetraoxide

A P-stereogenic linear tetraphosphine tetraoxide, (R,R)- or (S,S)-dpmppm(=O)₄, was synthesized to prepare C₂ dinuclear M(hfa)₃ complexes (M=Eu, Tb, Y) as the first example of lanthanide(III) complexes with P-chiral multidentate phosphine oxides. The mononuclear M(hfa)₃ complexes (M=Eu, Y) with a P-chiral diphosphine dioxide, tpdpb(=O)₂, were also prepared, and comparison of their photophysical properties for the Eu^III complexes revealed that significant chiral induction from the P-chiral centers arises on the achiral M(hfa)₃ units through intramolecular π-π stacking constraint in the dinuclear system.
