Synthesis and evaluation of the catalytic properties of semicarbazides derived from N-triphenylmethyl-aziridine-2-carbohydrazides

A straightforward synthesis of a series of new catalysts derived from N-triphenylmethyl-aziridine-2-carbohydrazides is described. The new compounds have been tested for the enantioselective addition of diethyl- and phenylethynylzinc to aryl and alkyl aldehydes, which afforded the corresponding chiral alcohols in high chemical yields (up to 92%) and with excellent ee’s of approximately 90%.     

Material profile influences in bulk‐heterojunctions

The morphology in mixed bulk‐heterojunction films are compared using three different quantitative measurement techniques. We compare the vertical composition changes using high‐angle annular dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron tomography and neutron and x‐ray reflectometry. The three measurement techniques yield qualitatively comparable vertical concentration measurements. The presence of a metal cathode during thermal annealing is observed to alter the fullerene concentration throughout the thickness of the film for all measurements. However, the absolute vertical concentration of fullerene is quantitatively different for the three measurements. Quantitative determination of sodium stearyl fumarate in a tablet formulation from continuous manufacturing using a high-pH reversed-phase HPLC method

This study demonstrates the first use of a reversed-phase (RP) high-performance liquid chromatography method with a high-pH buffer for the analysis of sodium stearyl fumarate (SSF) from a tablet formulation. After examining the retention time and peak shape using various buffer concentrations, buffer pH, and RP stationary phases, an optimized method was established using the XBridge® BEH C18 at high pH. This column was further evaluated for method specificity, accuracy, precision, linearity, stability, and sensitivity. Finally, the method was successfully used as a convenient and robust analytical procedure to accurately quantitate SSF in stratified tablets from a continuous manufacturing process to confirm the excipient uniformity throughout the process.     

Biosynthesis of Quantum Dots (CdTe) and its Effect on Eisenia fetida and Escherichia coli

Biosynthesis belongs to one of the new possibilities of nanoparticles preparation, whereas its main advantage is biocompatibility. In addition, the ability of obtaining the raw material for such synthesis from the soil environment is beneficial and could be useful for remediation. However, the knowledge of mechanisms that are necessary for the biosynthesis or effect on the bio-synthesizing organisms is still insufficient. In this study, we attempted to evaluate the effect of quantum dots (QDs) not only on a model organism of collembolans, but also on another soil organism—earthworm Eisenia fetida—and in also one widespread microorganism such as Escherichia coli. Primarily, we determined 28EC₅₀ as 72.4 μmol L⁻¹ for CdTe QDs in collembolans. Further, we studied the effect of QDs biosynthesis in E. fetida and E. coli. Using determination of QDs, low-molecular thiols and antioxidant activities, we found differences between both organisms and also between ways how they behave in the presence of Cd and/or Cd and Te. The biosynthesis in earthworms can be considered as its own protective mechanism; however, in E. coli, it is probably a by-product of protective mechanisms.

     

Calculation of local formal Fourier transforms

We calculate the local Fourier transforms for connections on the formal punctured disk, reproducing the results of J. Fang and C. Sabbah using a different method. Our method is similar to Fang’s, but more direct.
