Chiral discrimination within disordered adlayers on metal surfaces

Using a novel non-linear optical technique enantiomeric excess within a translationally disordered overlayer on a metal surface has been monitored for the first time.     

Fractionally colouring total graphs

Bchzad and Vizing have conjectured that given any simple graph of maximum degree , one can colour its edges and vertices with +2 colours so that no two adjacent vertices, or two incident edges, or an edge and either of its ends receive the same colour. We show that for any simple graphG, V(G)E(G) can be fractionally coloured with +2 colours.     

Proton-ionizable crown compounds. 4. New macrocyclic polyether ligands containing a triazole subcyclic unit

A series of macrocyclic polyether (crown) ligands containing the proton-ionizable s-triazole subcyclic unit were prepared by reacting the 1-THP blocked 3,5-bis(chloromethyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole with various oligoethylene glycols. The starting bis(chloromethyl)triazole is a vessicant and must be used with caution. Triazolo-18-crown-6 ( 5 ) formed stable complexes with barium, strontium, copper and benzylammonium cations but not with potassium or lithium. The crystal structure of 5 showed the triazole proton to be on nitrogen 3 which is outside the macroring cavity.     

Functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes via the Bingel reaction

Single-walled carbon nanotubes have been cyclopropanated under Bingel reaction conditions, and the functionalized nanotubes have been characterized by atomic force microscopy using "chemical tagging" techniques.     

Spherical tensor analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance signals

In a nuclear magnetic-resonance (NMR) experiment, the spin density operator may be regarded as a superposition of irreducible spherical tensor operators. Each of these spin operators evolves during the NMR experiment and may give rise to an NMR signal at a later time. The NMR signal at the end of a pulse sequence may, therefore, be regarded as a superposition of spherical components, each derived from a different spherical tensor operator. We describe an experimental method, called spherical tensor analysis (STA), which allows the complete resolution of the NMR signal into its individual spherical components. The method is demonstrated on a powder of a (13)C-labeled amino acid, exposed to a pulse sequence generating a double-quantum effective Hamiltonian. The propagation of spin order through the space of spherical tensor operators is revealed by the STA procedure, both in static and rotating solids. Possible applications of STA to the NMR of liquids, liquid crystals, and solids are discussed.     

Intermolecular recognition and crystal packing in molybdenum and tungsten coordination polymers as deduced from powder X-ray diffraction data

The molecular conformations and packing of [(tBuCO2)3M2(mu-X)M2(O2CtBu)3], where M = Mo and W, and X = oxalate and perfluoroterephthalate, determined in the solid-state from powder X-ray diffraction analysis, reveal one-dimensional coordination polymers involving pivalate-oxygen to metal interactions (X = perfluoroterephthalate), and oxalate--as well as pivalate-oxygen to metal bonds (X = oxalate), and allows explanation of the unusual state-dependent chromic properties of these compounds.     

Thermotropic copolyesters. II. Synthesis and characterization of copolyesters containing the bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-2-ene mesogenic unit

Random copolyesters based on 1,4-benzenedimethanol, trans-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, and 1,4-bicyclo[2.2.2]octanedimethanol as spacers in ratios of 2 : 3 of the mesogenic group, bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-2-ene-1,4-diol were prepared and characterized. The copolyesters containing the 1,4-benzenedimethanol moiety formed a more brightly colored birefringent fluid in the melt.     

Synthesis of two new crown ethers containing selenium and the complexation of one of them with silver and lead

Two new macrocyclic crown ethers containing one or two selenium donor atoms have been prepared. Diselena-18-crown-6 (2) was found to transport silver ions through a methylene chloride bulk membrane at about the same rate as the analogous dithia- (3) and diaza-18-crown-6 (4) compounds and transported lead ions about the same as dithia-18-crown-6 but better than diaza-18-crown-6.
