A critical review on the dynamics of Jovian atmospheres

Some basic theoretical issues of the Jovian atmospheric dynamics are discussed. Those include the depth of the motions, thermal convection both with deep and shallow configurations, the two-dimensional turbulence theory and its relevance. The refractive index analysis is suggested to interpret the coherent structures like Jupiter's Great Red Spot in terms of Charney-Drazin constraint based on the observations. A possibility of Jovian data assimilation is proposed as a future direction.     

Remarkably Selective Ag(+) Extraction and Transport by Thiolariat Ethers

Synthesis and metal binding properties of thiolariat ethers, where a sulfide side chain is introduced into a framework of a crown ether, have been performed. Remarkably high Ag(+) selectivity among heavy metal ions was observed in solvent extraction and transport across a liquid membrane using thiolariat ethers with a 15-crown-5 ring as carriers. Thiolariat ethers with a 12-crown-4 or a 18-crown-6 do not exhibit such a high Ag(+) selectivity. The former binds metal ions weakly, and the latter recognizes Pb(2+) as well as Ag(+). The corresponding oxygen analogs, i.e. lariat ethers, do not show Ag(+) selectivity. The Ag(+) binding strength of the sulfoxide and sulfone analogs is much lower than that of thiolariat ethers. Thiolariat ethers with a benzocrown framework containing a sulfide chain at the 4 position of the benzene nucleus showed very low affinity to Ag(+). Extractability and transport ability using various thiolariat ether derivatives strongly suggested that this high Ag(+) selectivity is a result of the synergistic coordination of the ring oxygen and the sulfur atom of the thiolariat ether. NMR chemical shifts of protons and carbons in the proximity of the sulfur atom of the thiolariat ether were changed significantly in accordance with the synergistic coordination described above. 1:1 Complexation between a thiolariat ether and Ag(+) were supported by a Job plot using the chemical shift of the methylene protons adjacent to the sulfur atom.     

Isolation and Stereostructures of Dolastatin G and Nordolastatin G, Cytotoxic 35-Membered Cyclodepsipeptides from the Japanese Sea Hare Dolabella auricularia

A bioassay-directed fractionation of the cytotoxic constituents of the Japanese sea hare Dolabella auricularia resulted in the isolation of two 35-membered depsipeptides dolastatin G (1) and nordolastatin G (2), which showed cytotoxicity against HeLa S(3) cells with IC(50) values of 1.0 and 5.3 &mgr;g/mL, respectively. The gross structures of these substances were established by spectroscopic analysis including 2D NMR techniques. The absolute stereostructure of 1 was determined by chiral HPLC analysis of amino acid components obtained from acid hydrolysis of 1 and by the enantioselective syntheses of two degradation products arising from polyketide portions. Nordolastatin G (2) is a congener that has the same absolute stereochemistry as that of 1.     

Fluorinated polysilanes. Palladium catalyzed 1,4-addition of fluorodisilanes to conjugated diene and enone systems

In the presence of palladium complexes as catalysts, fluorinated disilanes add to 1,3-dienes, metehyl vinyl ketone and p-benzoquinone to give mainly 1,4-addition products.     

Syntheses of polyurethanes derived from oximes and their photodegradation

Polyoxime-urethanes have been synthesized from dioximes and diisocyanates, and their structures have been ascertained by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. They can be represented by the general formula: These polymer films were photolyzed by using a high-pressure 100-W mercury lamp, and the rate of decomposition of the N? O bond was determined by use of ultraviolet and infrared spectra, or comparing the photochemical behavior with that of corresponding model compounds. Upon irradiating these polymers in the presence or absence of sensitizers or a hydrogen donor, there were obtained photolyzed polymers of low molecular weight, of which the molecular weights were estimated by observing the viscosity changes. To deduce the mechanism of photodegradation of polyoxime-urethane, photolysis of benzophenone oxime-phenyl urethane was investigated as a model compound.     

Neighboring effect of thiol group in acyl transfer reaction on a polymer with a lipoic acid structure

Reductive S-monoacylation of lipoamide with some carboxylic acids and tri-n-butylphosphine was carried out in acetonitrile to obtain the corresponding S-monoacylated compounds in excellent yield. This method was applied to the preparation of S-monoacylated dihydrolipoyl polymer with a neighboring thiol group. The acyl transfer from the polymer to cyclohexylamine was enhanced as much as 64 times by adding silver perchlorate.     

New methods and reagents in organic synthesis. 56. Total syntheses of patellamides B and C,cytotoxic cyclic peptides from a tunicate 2. Their real structures have been determined by their syntheses.

The proposed structures of patellamides B and C, cytotoxic lipophilic cyclic peptides from a marine tunicate, have been revised on the basis of the spectral data of their partial hydrolysates, and their revised structures have been synthetically confirmed by the use of diphenyl phosphorazidate(DPPA) and diethyl phosphorocyanidate(DEPC).     

Synthesis of a novel silicon-bridged [2.2]metacyclophan-9-ene and its photolytic transannular reaction

A novel [2.2]metacyclophane in which two benzene rings are linked together with a carbon-carbon double bond and a disilane unit was prepared. Photolysis of the cyclophane in the presence of oxygen afforded the 4,5-dihydro-4,5-disilapyrene derivative via a transannular dehydrogenation reaction.
