Systematic study of d-wave superconductivity in the 2D repulsive Hubbard model

The cluster size dependence of superconductivity in the conventional two-dimensional Hubbard model, commonly believed to describe high-temperature superconductors, is systematically studied using the dynamical cluster approximation and quantum Monte Carlo simulations as a cluster solver. Because of the nonlocality of the d-wave superconducting order parameter, the results on small clusters show large size and geometry effects. In large enough clusters, the results are independent of the cluster size and display a finite temperature instability to d-wave superconductivity.     

Electronic absorption spectra of CCS and CCS in neon matrices

Mass selected C₂S⁻ ions have been co-deposited with neon to grow a matrix at 6 K. The and electronic absorption spectra of the linear CCS⁻ anion have been identified with origin band at 10 606 and 22 273 cm⁻¹, respectively. After exposure to UV radiation a new electronic transition of CCS is observed (origin band at 30 563 cm⁻¹) in addition to its known band system. Ab initio calculations provide support for the symmetry assignment of the upper electronic states of CCS⁻, CCS and of the vibrational structure in the spectra.     

On Crossing Event Formulas in Critical Two-Dimensional Percolation

Several formulas for crossing functions arising in the continuum limit of critical two-dimensional percolation models are studied. These include Watts's formula for the horizontal-vertical crossing probability and Cardy's new formula for the expected number of crossing clusters. It is shown that for lattices where conformal invariance holds, they simplify when the spatial domain is taken to be the interior of an equilateral triangle. The two crossing functions can be expressed in terms of an equianharmonic elliptic function with a triangular rotational symmetry. This suggests that rigorous proofs of Watts's formula and Cardy's new formula will be easiest to construct if the underlying lattice is triangular. The simplification in a triangular domain of Schramm's bulk Cardy's formula is also studied.     

Measurement of the resonant d(mu)t molecular formation rate in solid HD

Measurements of muon-catalyzed dt fusion ( d(mu)t-->4He + n + mu(-)) in solid HD have been performed. The theory describing the energy dependent resonant molecular formation rate for the reaction (mu)t + HD-->[(d(mu)t)pee](*) is compared to experimental results in a pure solid HD target. Constraints on the rates are inferred through the use of a Monte Carlo model developed specifically for the experiment. From the time-of-flight analysis of fusion events in 16 and 37 microg x cm(-2) targets, an average formation rate consistent with 0.897+/-(0.046)(stat)+/-(0.166)(syst) times the theoretical prediction was obtained.     

Low temperature survival of slender naiad (Najas flexilis) seeds

The response to drying and storage at -20 degrees C or in liquid nitrogen was studied in seeds of the freshwater aquatic plant Najas flexilis. The seeds of this species show some desiccation sensitivity, although post-harvest storage in water at 16 degrees C resulted in improvements in desiccation tolerance. There was 63% germination of seeds dried to 9.5% moisture content (30% RH) following this maturation period. Optimum moisture contents for seeds stored at -20 degrees C for 3 months and in liquid nitrogen for 1 week were ~11% and ~15%, respectively.     

d-wave superconductivity in the hubbard model

The superconducting instabilities of the doped repulsive 2D Hubbard model are studied in the intermediate to strong coupling regime with the help of the dynamical cluster approximation. To solve the effective cluster problem we employ an extended noncrossing approximation, which allows for a transition to the broken symmetry state. At sufficiently low temperatures we find stable d-wave solutions with off-diagonal long-range order. The maximal T(c) approximately 150 K occurs for a doping delta approximately 20% and the doping dependence of the transition temperatures agrees well with the generic high- T(c) phase diagram.
