Traces on Noncommutative Homogeneous Spaces

We study properties of C*-algebraic deformations of homogeneous spaces G/Γ which are equivariant in the sense that they preserve the natural action of G by left translation. The center is shown to be isomorphic to C(G/G⁰_ρ) for a certain subgroup G⁰_ρ of G, and there is a 1-1 correspondence between normalised traces and probability measures on G/G⁰_ρ. This makes it possible to represent the deformed algebra as operators over L²(G/Γ). Applications to K-theory are also mentioned.     

Theoretical stability,thin film synthesis and transport properties of the Mon +1GaCn MAX phase

The phase stability of Mo_{n +1}GaC_n has been investigated using ab‐initio calculations. The results indicate stability for the Mo₂GaC phase only, with a formation enthalpy of –0.4 meV per atom. Subsequent thin film synthesis of Mo₂GaC was performed through magnetron sputtering from elemental targets onto Al₂O₃ [0001], 6H‐SiC [0001] and MgO [111] substrates within the temperature range of 500 °C and 750 °C. High structural quality films were obtained for synthesis on MgO [111] substrates at 590 ºC. Evaluation of transport properties showed a superconducting behavior with a critical temperature of approximately 7 K, reducing upon the application of an external magnetic field. Control of diabatic versus adiabatic field dissociation in a heavy Rydberg system

A novel phenomenon is observed in the dynamics of laser-prepared coherent wave packets, bound by the Coulombic 1/r potential of an ion-pair system. After exciting weakly bound (approximately 3 meV) H(+)(-) wave packets in a Stark field, and permitting them to evolve in time, control of field dissociation via adiabatic and diabatic routes is demonstrated by applying delayed pulsed-electric fields, involving a zero-field crossing. Control manifests itself through the production of ions from each pathway at a different instant in time. This phenomenon is applied to map the oscillatory behavior of an angular momentum wave packet in a heavy Rydberg system. The characteristic frequencies of the observed Stark oscillations verify predicted mass-scaling laws for heavy Rydberg systems.     

Non-Abelian Random Polygons: A New Model in Statistical Physics

A model in statistical physics is presented based on assigning non-Abelian phase factors to the turning points of polygons in three dimensions. This model allows for an exact solution and exhibits an unexpectedly rich phase structure. The model as well as the solution are obtained by a generalization of the methods of Kac and Ward and by mapping the problem to a Markov process as was done by Feynman for the two-dimensional Ising model     

A new diquark model for deep inelastic structure functions

The bulk of data from deep inelasticep, eD, μp, μN, νp and νN scattering is fitted with a new diquark model of nucleons. The proton is found to be mostly in au(ud) ₀ state, where the (ud)₀ diquark has spin and isospin zero. There is hence no trace ofSU(6) symmetry among diquarks in nucleons.     

(E,E,E)‐1,3,5‐Tris[4‐(acetyl­sulfan­yl)­styr­yl]­benzene toluene hemisolvate

The first crystal structure of a three‐terminal sulfur end‐capped oligo­phenyl­ene­vinyl­ene, C₃₆H₃₀O₃S₃·0.5C₇H₈, has been determined at 122 (1) K. The mol­ecular threefold symmetry is not utilized in the crystal structure. It is confirmed that the double bonds have been fully transformed into a trans configuration by iodine treatment.     

One-pot three-component reaction for the synthesis of alpha-(aminoethyl)-alpha,beta-enones

[reaction: see text] The synthesis of alpha-substituted alpha,beta-enones by a new metal iodide-promoted one-pot three-component reaction involving commercially available cyclopropyl ketones, aldehydes, and secondary amines followed by base treatment is described.     

A novel oxidative rearrangement of 6-methoxypyran-2-ones

As part of our continuing studies of pyrone-containing natural products, a series 6-methoxypyran-2-ones were synthesized. These were found to react with molecular oxygen at 20 degrees C, and this novel reaction yielded a series of highly functionalized alpha,beta-butenolides. [reaction: see text]     

Single-optical-element soft-x-ray interferometry with a laser-plasma x-ray source

We report on a compact interferometer for the water-window soft-x-ray range that is suitable for operation with laser-plasma sources. The interferometer consists of a single diffractive optical element that focuses impinging x rays to two focal spots. The light from these two secondary sources forms the interference pattern. The interferometer was operated with a liquid-nitrogen jet laser-plasma source at lambda=2.88 nm. Scalar wave-field propagation was used to simulate the interference pattern, showing good correspondence between theoretical and experimental results. The diffractive optical element can simultaneously be used as an imaging optic, and we demonstrate soft-x-ray microscopy with interferometric contrast enhancement of a phase object.
