Weathering steel, and particularly CorTen steel, is a very used material for modern artworks exhibited outdoors. One of the characteristic that makes this material so attractive to artists is the property to develop a protective rust layer composed by iron oxides which preserves its metallic core from atmospheric corrosion. This study was conducted to evaluate the conservation state of four CorTen sculptures by Eduardo Chillida, located in different places of Bilbao city (north of Spain) and affected by different factors (environmental among others) by using Raman spectroscopy. Measurements were performed in situ with a handheld Raman spectrometer mounted on a tripod with x–y–z axes motorization at the micron level. The most common oxyhydroxides detected were lepidocrocite (γ‐FeO(OH)), goethite (α‐FeO(OH)), hematite ( ‐Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4), being goethite the most stable phase. All the iron oxyhydroxides were identified in all of the studied sculptures but their relative amounts were different for each sculpture. The consequences of the marine aerosols exposure in the steel surface were also studied, detecting limonite (FeO(OH)·nH2O) and akaganeite (β‐FeO(OH)). The results confirmed that the evolution of the rust layer present on the analyzed weathering steels is different, depending both on the exposure and the particular type of the steel. The 3051 USEPA method (or alternatively, the 3051A) can be considered nowadays as a reference method to extract metals from sediments. However, after microwave heating, the sample must be allowed to cool down, which results in a considerable lengthening of the whole analytical process. Microwave ovens and their maintenance are, in addition, expensive, and its use is relatively dangerous. The use of ultrasound focused energy to assist the extraction of chemicals from solid samples is a safe and relatively cheap technique. In this work we propose a new method to extract simultaneously several elements from sediments using ultrasound energy focused in a glass probe to accelerate the process, and check its possibilities to become an alternative to the EPA3051(A) approach. The optimised procedure allows extracting 13 elements in only 6 min, with similar recoveries and, in general, better repetitivities than the EPA3051. In addition, the suspension is only slightly heated during the leaching process.  相似文献

Polubarinova-Kochina's analytical differential equation methodis used to determine the pseudo-steady-state solution to problemsinvolving the freezing (solidification) of wedges of liquidwhich are initially at their fusion temperature. A small plate of oil on copper painting from the Italian Renaissance period was characterized by means of noninvasive spectroscopic methods. The study was conducted by the use of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and Raman and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopies to determine the technology production process in such kinds of artworks. Results allowed us to characterize the copper alloy of the support media; the preparation layer, which is composed by white lead; and the pictorial layer of variable composition (green copper sulphate compounds, red lead, carbon black, brown earth pigments, gold, vermilion, and white lead). The complementarity of the techniques used in this study has proven to be highly effective.  相似文献

A set of chromolithographs from the 19th century were analysed to identify the fillers and pigments used for their elaboration. Because of the delicacy of the chromolithographs, the research involved the use of Raman, Fourier‐transform infrared and energy dispersive X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopies for a complete characterization of the works on paper without removing any microsamples. Despite the high fluorescence of the samples when analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, in this paper, we demonstrated that ink spectra can be successfully enhanced by subtracting the spectra of the supporting background paper. The results of the study showed that, apparently, the lithographer used a limited range of common inorganic pigments from the 19th century (carbon black, chrome yellow, Prussian blue, red ochre, red lead and vermilion) together with organic pigments (indigo blue, gamboge and a red organic pigment). The study also found that despite the fact that during the 19th and early 20th century the use of mixtures of several pigments was a common practice, unusual admixtures were used for the preparation of some colours of the studied chromolithographs.
