Novel products from attempted michael addition to 1-methyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-4-carbonitrile

The reaction of some phenols with the title compound, in the presence of sodium, gives 2-(2-hydroxyaryl_piperidine derivatives. Geometrical isomers have been separated, which differ in having an equatorial (A) or axial (B) cyano group on the piperidine chair (the methyl and aryl groups are equatorial in both forms). The x-ray crystallographic structures of an example of each of A and B are reported and the proton NMR spectra are assigned.     

A new class of hybrid materials via salt inclusion: novel copper(II) arsenates Na(5)ACu(4)(AsO(4))(4)Cl(2) (A = Rb,Cs) composed of alternating covalent and ionic lattices

Two novel copper(II) arsenates Na5ACu4(AsO4)4Cl2 (A = Rb, Cs) were synthesized by conventional solid-state methods using reactive molten salt media. These compounds are isostructural and crystallize in an orthorhombic lattice (Fmmm, No. 69; Z = 8). The cell constants are a = 14.632(3) A, b = 18.872(2) A, c = 14.445(3) A, V = 3989(1) A3, for A = Rb; a = 14.638(3) A, b = 18.990(4) A, c = 14.418(3) A, V = 4008(1) A3, for A = Cs. Single-crystal structure studies reveal a new composite framework consisting of alternating covalent and ionic lattices. The covalent lattice contains highly oriented oligomeric mu-oxo [Cu4O12]16- tetrameric units with a cyclo-S8-like Cu4O4 magnetic core that resembles the building block of layered cuprates. The ionic slab consists of a novel framework of mixed alkali metal chloride lattice and rarely seen Na6O8 clusters. Similar to organic-inorganic hybrid materials, the title compounds present a new class of host-guest chemistry via salt inclusion reactions.     

Syntheses and conformational analyses of some 3-amino-2,5-dioxo-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzazepine derivatives: X-ray crystal structure of 35–3-[[(1,1-dimethylethoxy)carbonyl]amino]-2,5-dioxo-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzazepine

The constrained dipeptide mimic 1 was synthesized from 2 in three steps with 65% overall yield. Analyses of the ¹H nmr data of a number of 3-amino-2,5-dioxo-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzazepine derivatives led to the conclusion that these compounds adopt a similar conformation and that this ring system is rigid. X-ray crystallography was used to define the structure of 3 , and computer-aided energy minimization of 6 gave a preferred conformation similar to that observed in the crystal of 3 .     

A flowing afterglow study of [C3H3]− ions generated from the reactions of [OH]− with allene and propyne

Flowing afterglow studies are reported for the rates and modes of reaction of [C₃H₃]^? ions produced from allene and propyne by reaction with [OH]^? or by electron impact. Studies with methyl formate provide further evidence for the formation from propyne of two distinct stable species.
