Optical sensors based on hybrid DNA/conjugated polymer complexes

Single-stranded DNA (ss-DNA) can specifically bind to various targets, including a complementary ss-DNA, ions, proteins, drugs, and so forth. When binding takes place, the oligonucleotide probe often undergoes a conformational transition. This conformational change of the negatively charged ss-DNA can be detected by using a water-soluble, cationic polythiophene derivative, which transduces the complex formation into an optical (colorimetric or fluorometric) signal without any labeling of the probe or the target. This simple and rapid methodology has enabled the specific and sensitive detection of nucleic acids and human thrombin. This new biophotonic tool can easily be applied to the detection of various other biomolecules and is also useful in the high-throughput screening of new drugs.

Determination of lutetium by fluorimetry, using BPMPHD and CTMAB

Lutetium(III) forms an association compound with a new synthetic reagent, 1,6-bi(1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone-4)hexandione (BPMPHD), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB). The compound enhances the natural fluorescence of BPMPHD remarkably, upon which a new fluorescence method was developed for determining lutetium in rare earth (RE) samples. The determination range was 1.80 × 10^–7–8.8 × 10^–6 g/ml. The determination limit was 29 ng/ml. The composition of the ion associate was [Lu(BPMPHD)₂]–CTMAB⁺.     

触头用银合金粉末的氧化性能和氧化后的组织结构

通过热重实验和扫描电子显微等方法，研究了４种触头用银合金粉末的氧化性能及氧化后的组织结构。发现Ａｇ－Ｓｎ－ＲＥ合金粉末氧化以后，在粉末表层形成一层纯银层，其组织结构理想；它的氧化性能最好，适于制备触头材料。Ａｇ－Ｓｎ－ＲＥ合金粉末的优良氧化性能与其氧化后理想的组织结构有关。稀土元素可以降低合金粉末的氧化温度，其它影响作用有待于进一步研究。     

A new isocoumarin from bark of Pellodendron chinense

A new isocoumarin, 3-acetyl-3,4-dihydro-5,6-dimethoxy-1H-2-benzopyran-1-one, was isolated from the cortex of Phellodendron chinense schneid. The structure was determined on the basis of spectroscopic evidences.     

The kinetics of tritium-hydrogen exchange in xanthosine,theobromine and monomethylated derivatives of xanthine

Tritium exchange at C-8 of xanthosine, theobromine, 1-, 3- and 7-methylxanthine in water has been studied. The rates of detritiation of these compounds have been determined over a pH range at constant temperature. Several mechanisms of exchange involving various ionic forms of substrate operating at different pH have been suggested.     

Effects of medium and chemical modification on thermal characteristics of Β-lactoglobulin

The thermal properties of -lactoglobulin (-LG) were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under different medium conditions.pH, neutral salts, protein perturbants, and polyols all affected the DSC characteristics of -LG. Acylation with fatty acids also changed the thermal properties, particularly peak width at half-height. The results suggest that the structural stability of -LG is controlled by non-covalent forces, particularly electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Disulfide bonds did not contribute to the thermal response of -LG. Fatty N-acyl-amino acids caused marked increases in thermal stability and decreases in denaturation enthalpy, and additional peaks were observed in the presence of some palmitoyl derivatives.Contribution No. 2310, Centre for Food and Animal Research.We thank D. SYNERGISTIC MODIFICATION OF EPDM AND CROSSLINKING AGENT IN IMMISCIBLE BLENDS OF POLYVINYL CHLORIDE WITH LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE

The synergism of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer copolymer （EPDM） and dicumyl peroxide （DCP, a crosslinking agent） in low density polyethylene （LDPE）/poly（vinyl chloride） （PVC） blends was investigated. When EDPM and DCP are added to the blends simultaneously, the tensile properties could be improved significantly, especially for the blends with LDPE matrix. For example, incorporation of 10/1 （mass ratio） EPDM/DCP improves the tensile strength of the LDPE/PVC （mass ratio 80/20） blend from 7.9 MPa to 8.5 MPa and the elongation at break from 25% to 503%. Results from selective extraction, phase-contrast microscopy and thermal analysis reveal that the improvement in the tensile properties of the blends with LDPE matrix is principally due to the formation of a fine crosslinking network of the LDPE and EPDM phase. The outstanding modification effect of EPDM is explained by its dual functions： molecular entanglement with LDPE and the enhanced efficiency of DCP in the blends.     

Hydrothermal synthesis and novel two-dimensional architecture with fluorescent properties constructed using 2-bromo-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate

A novel two-dimensional complex, [Cu(bbdc)(phen)]·(H₂O)(bbdc = 2-bromo-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate dianion; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), has been synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray analysis. The crystal structure consists of infinite chains of [Cu₂( ₄-bbdc)]²⁺ units connected by bis-monodentate bbdc ligands, the coordination mode of which [ ₄-bbdc] is very rare in the phenyldicarboxylate complexes. The substituent group of bbdc is believed to be the growth key of this coordination network.
