The pseudoplastic rheological properties of concentrated monodisperse polystyrene latexes with known sodium lauryl sulfate and methylcellulose surface coverages have been studied. It was assumed that the flow units of a concentrated thickened latex subjected to mechanical shear are “flocs” which comprise many particles with immobilized medium in the interstices. During shearing, the particle-particle bonds within the flocs undergo compression and stretching, sometimes breaking and reforming, causing the energy dissipation measured as the yield stress. A model was developed to calculate the average number of bonds per floc and this model was applied to an empirical modification of Firth and Hunter's elastic floc model to correlate the yield stress with the particle-particle separation pressure (defined as a measure of the interaction strength). It was found that the yield stress of a thickened latex is affected by the particle-particle interaction and the morphology of the particle flocs. The particle-particle interaction is affected by the surface coverage of thickener and emulsifier, and their concentrations in the aqueous phase, as well as other factors. The morphology of the particle flocs is affected by the particle interaction and the mechanical treatment. The adsorption of emulsifier and thickener, the rheology of the thickened latexes, the morphology of the particle flocs, and the particle-particle interactions, as well as their interrelationships, are described.  相似文献

The level of colloidal stability of a latex coating formulation is governed by the hydrodynamic size of the pigment particle and its aggregates, along with the electrolyte concentration of the coating formulation. Model latex coating films were developed to investigate the effects of pigment aggregate size and the electrolyte concentration in the latex coating formulation on the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC), as determined by mechanical optical and permeability properties.

The poly(styrene) pigment and poly(styrene-butadiene) (60:40) binder particles were characterized for their relative sizes, the surfactant surface coverage and the critical coagulation concentration, in dilute (1.8% solids) and concentrated (42% solids) dispersions, for sodium chloride and calcium chloride. The hydrodynamic diameter of the strong pigment aggregates formed as a function of aging time, after adjusting the electrolyte concentration of the pigment dispersion to the c.c.c. level were characterized by capillary chromatography technique.

The Increasing size of the pigment aggregates and the increasing electrolyte concentration of the latex coating formulation were shown to sharply decrease the CPVC values determined by mechanical and optical properties such as tensile strength and contrast ratio of the coating. Their influence on the permeability property of the films such as porosity was limited by the availability of the binder to form smooth surface below 35-40% PVC.

The morphological studies of the coating films showed that aggregates cause an increase in the degree of non-uniform distribution of the binder and pigment in the latex coating film  相似文献

A mathematical model is presented to describe the monomer transport between monomer droplets, aqueous phase, and polymer particles during the course of an emulsion polymerization. The model was used to investigate the role of the cosurfactant (hexadecane) in the miniemulsion copolymerization of 50:50 molar ratio vinyl acetate-butyl acrylate monomer mixture, as well as the effect of the different components and process variables on the rate of copolymerization, monomer distribution between phases, and composition of the copolymer.  相似文献

The performance of the designed structured core/shell latex particles in toughening polycarbonate (PC) matrix was examined. The influence of parameters related to the core/shell latex particles on toughening PC such as: the particle size and levels of crosslinking of the core rubber particles, composition and molecular-weight of the shell polymer, the weight ratio of shell and core polymers as well as the particle morphology was evaluated. Core/shell structured latex particles with thinner shells of higher molecular-weight polymers were found to improve the impact resistance of PC. The role of chain entanglements in increased adhesion between the discrete rubbery phase and the continuous glass matrix are discussed.  相似文献

During the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as stabilizer and potassium persulfate as initiator, the VAc reacts with PVA forming PVA-graft-PVAc. When the grafted polymer reaches a critical size it becomes water-insoluble and precipitates from the aqueous phase contributing to the formation of polymer particles. Since particle formation and therefore the properties of the final latex will depend on the degree of grafting, it is important to quantify and to characterize the grafted PVA. In this work, the quantitative separation and characterization of the grafted water-insoluble PVA was carried out by a two-step selective solubilization of the PVAc latex, first with acetonitrile to separate PVAc homopolymer, followed by water to separate the water-soluble PVA from the remaining acetonitrile-insoluble material. After the separation, the water-soluble and water-insoluble PVA were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses, from which the details of the PVA-graft-PVAc structure were obtained. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Anionic dispersion polymerization in a hexane medium has been applied to the synthesis of monodisperse polystyrene particles in the size range of 1.41–6.16 μm, and having narrow molecular weight distributions Mw/Mn of 1.02–1.28. sec-Butyllithium was used as the initiator. Polystyrene-block-polybutadiene diblock copolymer containing 23% polystyrene block, (i.e., Stereon 730A) with a molecular weight of 147,000 g/mol and a polydispersity of 1.05, was found to be a suitable steric stabilizer for the preparation of micron-size polystyrene particles with narrow size distribution. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) was used as a promoter for obtaining narrow molecular weight distributions. However, this study revealed that the addition of small amounts of THF as promoter broadened the particle size distribution. High solids content polystyrene dispersions were also prepared without using any promoter by both batch and/or multi-addition monomer processes. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Relaxation of toroidal discharges is described by the principle of minimum energy dissipation together with the constraint of conserved global helicity. The resulting Euler-Lagrange equation is solved in toroidal coordinates for an axisymmetric torus by expressing the solutions in terms of Chandrasekhar-Kendall (C-K) eigenfunctions analytically continued in the complex domain. The C-K eigenfunctions are obtained as hypergeometric functions that are solutions of scalar Helmholtz equation in toroidal coordinates in the large aspect-ratio approximation. Equilibria are constructed by assuming the current to vanish at the edge of plasma. For the m=0, n=0 (m and n are the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers respectively) relaxed states, the magnetic field, current, q (safety factor) and pressure profiles are calculated for a given value of aspect-ratio of the torus and for different values of the eigenvalue λ r 0. The new feature of the present model is that solutions allow for both tokamak as well as RFP-like behaviour with increase in the values of λ r 0, which is related directly to volt-sec in the experiment.  相似文献
