Electronic phase separation in a low-temperature tetragonal phase of lanthanum-strontium cuprates according to 139La NQR data

A nonuniform electron density distribution is observed in La_{1−x− y} Nd_ySr_xCuO₄ and La_1−x−y Eu_ySr_xCuO₄, and long-lived magnetic fluctuations in these compounds are studied. The dynamics of the magnetic fluctuations depends strongly on the magnetic properties of the rare-earth ions, which stabilize the low-temperature tetragonal phase. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. Energy transfer between the flavin chromophores of electron-transferring flavoprotein fromMegasphaera elsdenii as inferred from time-resolved red-edge and blue-edge fluorescence spectroscopy

Both a mode-locked argon-ion laser and synchrotron radiation were used as excitation sources to obtain time-resolved polarized fluorescence of the two FAD cofactors in electron transferring flavoprotein fromMegasphaera elsdenii. Red-edge excited and blue-edge detected fluorescence anisotropy decay curves did not contain a fast relaxation process which was observed upon mainband excitation and detection. This relaxation was assigned to homo-energy transfer between the two FAD cofactors. Failure of energy transfer as observed with edge spectroscopy on this protein excludes restricted reorientational motion of the flavins as a possible mechanism of depolarization. From the global analysis of the fluorescence anisotropy decay surface obtained at multiple excitation and detection wavelengths, the distance between and the relative orientation of the flavins could be estimated. The methodology described has general applicability in other multichromophoric biopolymers and has the potential to acquire accurate geometrical parameters in these systems.     

Monitoring environmental electromagnetic fields. 1. Remote-sensing methods

Effect of plasma treatment of the dielectric on electroforming of a thin-film MIM system

It was found that when a thin dielectric film is exposed to the plasma of a low-voltage gas discharge, channels with elevated conductivity form in the film and these channels significantly facilitate the subsequent electroforming of the MIM system. It is concluded from the experimental data that even in the case of metallic electrodes highly conducting channels are formed in the dielectric by electronic processes occurring under the conditions of a strong electric field and not by diffusion of the electrode material.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 10, pp. 94–98, October, 1991.     

Quantum optical ramsey fringes and complementarity

An interferometer in which an atom traverses two identical micromaser cavities in succession is proposed. Depending on the preparation of the cavity fields, the probability for finding the atom in a definite final state displays Ramsey fringes or not. If the initial cavity fields are such that the state of the atom between the cavities can be determined, then the Ramsey fringes disappear, as is required by the principle of complementarity.     

Mössbauer gamma echo

By applying stepwise phase modulation of recoilless gamma radiation in a coincidence experiment, constructive interference is produced in transmission geometry between the source and the absorber fields. The resulting regenerated decay signal is called a gamma echo. Here it is demonstrated that during the decay of the 14.4 keV state of⁵⁷Fe multiple echo signals can be generated.     

On a fast direct elliptic solver by a modified Fourier method

We describe high order numerical algorithms for the solution of second order elliptic equations in rectangular domains. These algorithms are based on the Fourier method in combination with a subtraction procedure. The singularities at the corner points, arising due to non-smoothness of the boundaries, are treated explicitly using properly constructed singular corner functions. The present algorithm is a generalization of the Fast Poisson Solver developed in our previous paper. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Multiple-scattering-theory analysis of XANES spectra of SO2 adsorbed on Cu(100)

The sulphur K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of SO₂ multilayer and of SO₂ submonolayer adsorbed on Cu(100) are analysed. It is found that the dominant spectral features are of a molecular origin. The results support earlier findings that the SO₂ molecule stands perpendicular to the surface. Use of non-selfconsistent potentials does not lead to a good quantitative agreement between theory and experiment.     

Weak antilocalization in a 2D electron gas with chiral splitting of the spectrum

Motivated by the recent observation of the metal-insulator transition in Si MOSFETs, a study is made of the quantum interference correction to the conductivity in the presence of the Bychkov-Rashba spin splitting. For a small splitting, a crossover from the localizing to antilocalizing regime is obtained. The antilocalization correction vanishes, however, in the limit of a large separation between the chiral branches. The relevance of the chiral splitting for the 2D electron gas in Si MOSFETs is discussed. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor.
