In this article we survey the history of research on theories in mathematics education. We also briefly examine the origins of this line of inquiry, the contribution of Hans-Georg Steiner, the activities of various international topics groups and current discussions of theories in mathematics education research. This paper derives a Markov decision process model for the profitability of credit cards, which allows lenders to find an optimal dynamic credit limit policy. The states of the system are based on the borrower’s behavioural score and the decisions are what credit limit to give the borrower each period. In determining which Markov chain best describes the borrower’s performance, second order as well as first order Markov chains are considered and estimation procedures developed that deal with the low default levels that may exist in the data. This research is concerned with developing repair and training strategies for stand-by equipment which maximise the time until the equipment is unable to respond when it is needed. Equipment can only be used if it is in an operable state and the users have had sufficient recent training on it. Thus it is necessary to decide when to maintain/repair the equipment and when to use the equipment for training. Both actions mean the equipment is not readily available for use in an emergency. We develop discrete time Markov decision process formulations of this problem in order to investigate the form of the optimal policies which maximise the expected survival time until a catastrophic event when an emergency occurs and the equipment cannot respond. The two‐dimensional laminar incompressible flow over a backward‐facing step is computed using a spectral domain decomposition approach. A minimum number of subdomains (two) is used; high resolution being achieved by increasing the order of the basis Chebyshev polynomial. Results for the case of a Reynolds number of 800 are presented and compared in detail with benchmark computations. Stable accurate steady flow solutions were obtained using substantially fewer nodes than in previously reported simulations. In addition, the problem of outflow boundary conditions was examined on a shortened domain. Because of their more global nature, spectral methods are particularly sensitive to imposed boundary conditions, which may be exploited in examining the effect of artificial (non‐physical) outflow boundary conditions. Two widely used set of conditions were tested: pseudo stress‐free conditions and zero normal gradient conditions.
