Spectrafluorimetric method for the rapid screening of toxic heavy metals in water samples

A fast and inexpensive sensitive screening test for recognising potential wastewater contamination by the presence of highly toxic heavy metals is described. The test is based on the reaction of the toxic heavy metals Hg(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Ag(I) with 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) to produce highly fluorescent complexes.Optimum experimental conditions include a buffer of pH 7.2 (0.1 M citric acid/0.2 M Na₂HPO₄), a chelating reagent concentration of 6×10⁻⁴ M and the addition of 10⁻⁴ M of o-phenanthroline. The fluorescence emitted by the complexes was measured at 380 and 540 nm for excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively.Detection limits of 4, 3, 6 and 3 μg l⁻¹ were achieved for Hg, Cd, Pb and Ag. Relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) were between ±2 and ±6% of the fluorescence signals for five identical samples. Potential interference effects from other heavy metals (Zn, Mn, Co, Fe, Ni and Cu), which could affect the response of the proposed screening test was investigated. Results showed that none of these metals give rise to noticeable fluorescence signals under the above described experimental conditions.Finally, the capability of the proposed heavy metal screening test for the analysis of contaminated water samples is discussed.     

A concise and regioselective synthesis of 1-alkyl-4-imidazolecarboxylates

Reaction between ethyl 3-N,N-(dimethylamino)-2-isocyanoacrylate (1) and a primary amine (2) regioselectively affords 1-alkyl-4-imidazolecarboxylates (3) in good yields (52-89%). The method is applicable to unhindered and hindered amine substrates, as well as those containing reactive functionality such as alcohols and secondary and tertiary amines. [reaction: see text]     

High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of steroid hormones

In the present work, a practical, rapid, reliable and isocratic reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method is described for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of estriol, estradiol-17 beta, estrone, testosterone, and progesterone. Chromatographic separation is complete in 16 min using a mobile phase of 50% acetonitrile (v/v) in water. The order of elution is estriol, testosterone, estradiol-17 beta, estrone, and progesterone; retention times are 2.5, 5.5, 5.6, 6.9, 16.3 min, respectively. Absorbance maxima of individual steroids is the limiting factor in quantitative determination. The recommended wavelengths for UV monitoring are E3 214, E2 280, T 254, E1 214, and P4 254 nm.     

Flow injection-spectrophotometric determination of cresol compounds in water by reaction withp-aminophenol

A spectrophotometric method has been developed for the simultaneous determination ofo-cresol andm-cresol in water by reaction withp-aminophenol (PAP). Three different methodologies have been assayed; (i) batch analysis, after reaction in an alkaline medium in the presence of dissolved molecular oxygen as oxidizing agent, (ii) a stopped-flow procedure, carried out in the presence of KIO₄ and (iii) a flow injection method based on the same approach. The batch procedure requires 22 min for the full development of colour witho-cresol and 12 min form-cresol. In the stopped-flow mode, using KIO₄ and a reaction time of 12 min, better sensitivity can be obtained for both compounds and limits of detection of 10 g 1^–1 foro-cresol and 30 g 1^–1 form-cresol were found. The flow injection method has a lower sensitivity but permits more than 80 injections per hour. Based on the different maximum absorbance wavelengths obtained for the reaction products of PAP witho-cresol (614 nm) andm-cresol (632 nm), both compounds can be simultaneously determined in water samples and recoveries of 90 to 115% were found in spiked water samples of different types.     

Room-temperature liquid phosphorimetry of the aluminium-ferron chelate in micellar media : Determination of aluminium

Aluminium reacts with 7-iodo-8-quinolinol-5-sulphonic acid (Ferron) in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles to form a highly phosphorescent complex at room temperature. Suitable experimental conditions and the phosphorescent characteristics of the complex are described. Comparison with the results obtained for the phosphorescent niobium-Ferron complex in CTAB micelles helps to elucidate the mechanism of this type of phosphorescence. For aluminium the detection limit is 5.4 ng ml^?1; the relative standard deviation is 4.5% for 20 μg Al. The method is applied to aluminium determination in waters and dialysis fluids.     

Asymptotically independent topological indices on random trees

Topological indices are graph invariants used in computational chemistry to encode molecules. A frequent problem when performing structure-activity studies is that topological indices are inter-correlated. We consider a simple topological index and show asymptotic independence for a random tree model. This continues previous work on the correlation among topological indices. These findings suggest that a size-dependence in a certain class of distance-based topological indices can be eliminated.AMS subject classification: 05C80, 60E10, 92E10     

Palladium-catalyzed, stereoselective rearrangement of a tetracyclic allyl cyclopropane under arylation

The first example of a pi,sigma domino-Heck reaction under concomitant rearrangement of the tetracyclic allylcyclopropane endo,exo-bishomobarrelene (5) is reported; the stereoselective reaction proceeds via an intramolecular insertion of a primarily-formed carbopalladation intermediate into a strained cyclopropane C-C sigma-bond, giving 9.     

Ag(I) complexes with alkylidene-bis(2-aminopyrimidines) as building units for discrete metallomacrocyclic frames. A structural and solution study

Alkylidene-bis(2-aminopyrimidines) (pyr2Cx, x = 2-5) are useful ligands to interact with Ag(I) yielding discrete metallocycles. Crystal structures of the [(pyr2C2)Ag(NO3)]2 and [(H-pyr2C4)Ag(NO3)2]2 have been isolated where each macrocyclic moiety interacts with their surroundings through weak interactions, yielding 3D discrete structures, On the other hand, the solution study shows that the equilibrium constants for the formation of Ag(pyr2Cx)+ complexes are higher than the literature values for Ag(I) complexes with single pyrimidines, although the differences could be explained by invoking the solid-state structures of the Ag(I)-pyr2Cx complexes.
