Construction of the 17-Thiasteroid Ring System by the Diene-Sulfur Dioxide Cycloaddition Reaction

Abstract

We recently showed² that the steroid ring system can be constructed with a phosphorus atom replacing a carbon in the D-ring by the cycloaddition of a phosphorus (III) halide with a diene that is a vinyl dihydrophenanthrene derivative, such as (1). The phosphine oxide (3) resulting from the hydrolysis of the initial cycloadduct (2) has some resemblance to the hormone equilenin, which also has rings A and B in naphthalene form.     

Knowledge‐based choice of the initiator type for monomer removal by postpolymerization

The mechanisms involved in monomer removal by postpolymerization were investigated to establish a criterion to select the most effective initiator systems. Three redox systems yielding radicals of different hydrophobicities were studied. Efficiency in monomer removal by postpolymerization increased with the hydrophobicity of the radical formed from the initiator system. This result was independent of the water solubility of the residual monomer. The mechanistic reasons for this finding are discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2,8'-disubstituted-1,1'-binaphthyls: a new pattern in chiral ligands

The title binaphthyls 19 and 26, which are the positional isomers of 2-methoxy-2'-(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl (MOP, 19) and 2-amino-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (NOBIN, 26), have been synthesized by Suzuki coupling as the key step (10 + 15-->18), followed by functional group transformations, involving C-P and C-N bond formation (18-->19 and 18-->23). Racemic intermediate 22 was resolved by co-crystallization with N-benzylcinchonidinium chloride and the absolute configuration determined by X-ray crystallography. These novel binaphthyls are configurationally stable and, as such, potentially usable as chiral ligands in asymmetric reactions. Michael addition of the glycine-derived enolate 40 to methyl acrylate, carried out in the presence of (R)-(-)-27 as the chiral phase-transfer catalyst, afforded L-glutamic acid (S)-(+)-43 of 92% ee (after hydrolysis of the primary product).     

Helical self-organization and hierarchical self-assembly of an oligoheterocyclic pyridine-pyridazine strand into extended supramolecular fibers

The synthesis and characterization of an alternating pyridine-pyridazine strand comprising thirteen heterocycles are described. Spontaneous folding into a helical secondary structure is based on a general molecular self-organization process enforced by the conformational information encoded within the primary structure of the molecular strand itself. Conformational control based on heterocyclic "helicity codons" illustrates a strategy for designing folding properties into synthetic oligomers (foldamers). Strong intermolecular interactions of the highly ordered lock-washer subunits of compound 3 results in hierarchical supramolecular self-assembly into protofibrils and fibrils. Compound 3 also forms mechanically stable two-dimensional Langmuir-Blodgett and cast thin films.     

Comparative dielectric and thermotropic properties of liquid crystalline polyesters as a function of mesogen group and flexible thioether group length

Two polyesters containing rigid biphenyl and hydroquinone bisbenzoate groups and presenting flexible thioether moieties with different lengths (14 elements in the flexible group) have been carried out using a reaction of the Michaël type. The properties of these polyesters have been compared to those of polyesters of the same type presenting shorter flexible groups (11 elements). All these polymers present thermotropic properties: the biphenyl ones are smectic and the bisbenzoate ones are nematic. The biphenyl polyesters present two types of dielectric relaxations: α and β. The bisbenzoate ones show three relaxations, α and two β (β and β^′). The lengthening of the flexible group increases significantly the flexibility of the molecular chains.     

β‐Amino Alcohol Properfumes

Amino‐alcohol derivatives of fragrant, volatile aldehydes and ketones were synthesized in a one‐pot procedure by sequential cyanohydrin formation with trimethylsilyl cyanide and reduction with lithium aluminium hydride, or by ammonolysis of epoxide precursors. The amino alcohols are nonvolatile, stable properfumes releasing fragrant carbonyls by oxidation with sodium periodate or sodium bismuthate. Examples include amino alcohol properfumes of citronellal, Lilial^®, lauryl aldehyde, menthone, benzaldehyde, and anisaldehyde.     

Synthesis,stereochemistry and pharmacological activity of rac.-cis-tetrahydro-6-hydroxy-7-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-thiazepin-5(2H)-ones

Reaction of 2-aminoethanethiol ( 3 ) with trans-3-(p-methoxyplienyl)glycidate ( 4 ) gave the rac.-cis-1,4-thiazepinone 5 and a by-product 6 . The structure of 5 was proven by X-ray crystallography. The X-ray data revealed that this compound adopts the chair conformation in the solid state and the heterocyclic ring is sevenmembered. The structure of the by-product 6 was elucidated on the basis of spectral data. Compounds 9 and 10 were inactive as calcium channel blocking agents.     

The dependence of the variances of the parameters in non-linear regression analysis on the number of data points

In designing an experimentin which non-linear regression analysis is used to evaluate the physicochemical parameters that chracterize the behavior of the system being studied, it would be useful to be able to predict how the number of data points affects th reliabilities of the values obtained. The relation between these depends on hos the points are distributed as well as on the nature of the equation to which thd data are fitted. Weighted non-linear regression analysis has been applied to six common equations involving a total of fourteen parameters, using a number of n of points that was varied from 4 to     

Reductive Cross-Coupling of a Vinyl Thianthrenium Salt and Secondary Alkyl Iodides

We report the first reductive vinylation of alkyl iodides. The reaction uses a vinyl thianthrenium salt, a palladium catalyst, and an alkyl zinc intermediate formed in situ to trap the L_nPd^II(vinyl) complex formed after oxidative addition before it undergoes undesired homocoupling to form butadiene.     

Electroorganic synthesis. Reductive alkylation of functionalized 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones

Two-electron reduction of some substituted 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones 1 followed by alkylation of the dianionic intermediates leads through electrosynthesis to mixture of Z and E isomers of the corresponding substituted alkyl-(3-thioalkyl)-2-propenedithioates 2, 3 in satisfactory yield. The structure of those products was established by ¹³C and ¹H nmr and mass spectroscopy. The isomers ratios were determined by nmr spectroscopy.
