A role for fucose alpha(1-2) galactose carbohydrates in neuronal growth

We report a fucose alpha(1-2) galactose-mediated pathway for the modulation of neuronal growth and morphology. Our studies provide strong evidence for the presence of Fucalpha(1-2)Gal glycoproteins and lectin receptors in hippocampal neurons. Additionally, we show that manipulation of Fucalpha(1-2)Gal-associated proteins using small-molecule and lectin probes induces dramatic changes in neuronal morphology. These findings may provide a novel pathway to stimulate neuronal growth and regeneration.     

Solid phase deprotection of 2-nitrobenzenesulfonamides: synthesis of simple 2-(alkylamino)-pyrroles

The 2-nitrobenzenesulfonamide cleavage using a solid-phase thiophenolate reagent gives simple 2-(alkylamino)-pyrroles without the presence of the competing nucleophilic substitution product.     

Optimizing State Patrol Manpower Allocation

One of the most difficult tasks of state highway patrol administrators is allocation of manpower; i.e. determining the most effective level of operational manpower for patrol tasks. Typically, administrators resolve the allocation problem by relying on prior statistical data and by employing subjective analysis. In general, only limited systematic analyses have been applied to the problem. This paper presents an integer goal programming model for allocating highway patrolmen to road segments within a patrol region. The model is demonstrated via a case example of the Nebraska State Patrol. The results of the model are valuable to the patrol administrator for considering departmental goals and priority structure, in addition to available historical data, in the assignment of state patrol manpower.

A generalization of the schwarz alternating method to an arbitrary number of subdomains

Summary We give a generalization of the Schwarz alternating method to an arbitrary number of subdomains. As applications, we prove that the method converges for the main second-order boundary value problems, as well as for the system of linear elasticity.For the Dirichlet problems it is proved that the method converges geometrically and some numerical examples are given.     

On a Fourier Method of Embedding Domains Using an Optimal Distributed Control

We propose a domain embedding method to solve second order elliptic problems in arbitrary two-dimensional domains. This method can be easily extended to three-dimensional problems. The method is based on formulating the problem as an optimal distributed control problem inside a rectangle in which the arbitrary domain is embedded. A periodic solution of the equation under consideration is constructed easily by making use of Fourier series. Numerical results obtained for Dirichlet problems are presented. The numerical tests show a high accuracy of the proposed algorithm and the computed solutions are in very good agreement with the exact solutions.     

A facile synthesis of new 5H-indazolo[3,2-b]benzo[d]-1,3-oxazines via one-pot intramolecular Bis-heterocyclizations

The parent 5H-indazolo[3,2-b]benzo[d]-1,3-oxazine heterocycle as well as a series of novel analogues have been synthesized utilizing two subsequent intramolecular heterocyclizations in one pot. A variety of diversity groups were added to explore the scope of this reaction and to provide a number of new compounds for biological screening.     

Total synthesis of leucascandrolide a: a new application of the Mukaiyama aldol-Prins reaction

A total synthesis of the marine natural product leucascandrolide A has been completed. The titanium tetrabromide-mediated Mukaiyama aldol-Prins (MAP) reaction with aldehydes developed in our group provided a highly convergent and stereoselective method for assembling the core of the molecule. A new class of MAP reactions with acetals is introduced, and mechanistic considerations for both MAP methods are described. The total synthesis was completed by coupling of the side chain through two avenues: a known Still-Gennari olefination and a new Z-selective aldol/dehydroselenation reaction. Both procedures were highly selective and provided the natural product.
