Influence of Zinc Intercalation on Processes in Nickel Oxide Electrode and on Service Life of Nickel-Zinc Battery

The dependence of capacity and service life of a nickel-zinc battery on the mechanism of zinc transfer and the rate of zinc intercalation into nickel oxide electrodes differing in the conductivities of the active paste and porous structures was studied.     

Synthesis and complexing properties ofcis,cis-1,3,5-tri-[2-(diphenylphosphinyI)ethylamino]cyclohexane

A novel polydentate phosphorus-containing complexing agent,cis,cis-1,3,5-tri[2-(diphenyl-phosphinyl)ethylamino]cyclohexane, has been prepared on the basis ofcis,cis-1,3,5-triamino-cyclohexane. The method of potentiometric titration in an aqueous—organic medium (70% ethanol, ionic strength 0.01M LiNO₃, 298 K) has been used to study the acid-base and complexing properties of the title compound. The ligand thus prepared forms 11 complexes with Cu²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Ni²⁺ cations; formation of hydroxocomplexes MOHL⁺ has been observed in the case of Zn²⁺ and Cd²⁺.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Nitration equilibrium of water-soluble carboxycellulose

Maximum and minimum values of the equilibrium constants for nitration of hydroxyl groups in water-soluble carboxycellulose (WSCC) have been estimated. Electronegative substituants and elements of the cellulose structure in the WSCC molecule substantially lower the equilibrium constants for nitration compared with those for polyatomic aliphatic alcohols.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 10, pp. 2254–2258, October, 1991.     

Preparation and properties of secondary amides of 1,1-dinitroalkanecarboxylic acids

The previously unknown secondary amides of 1,1-dinitroalkanecarboxylic acids were prepared by the reaction of polynitroimidoyl fluorides with water in the presence of mineral acids. They are inert with respect to electrophiles, but react with nucleophiles with the cleavage of the C-C bond between the carbonyl C atom and the C atom of the dinitromethylene group. An X-ray structural study of the amides was carried out and their thermochemical characteristics were determined.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Effect of Lanthanide Additives to a Nickel Oxide Electrode of a Sealed Nickel-Zinc Battery on the Self-Discharge and Hydrogen Pressure

The influence exerted by addition of a nickel-based alloy containing lanthanides (La, Ce, Nd, Pr) to the active paste of a nickel oxide electrode on the self-discharge and hydrogen pressure in a sealed nickel-zinc battery was studied.     

Kinetic Investigation of Unusual Arbuzov Reaction

Abstract

3,4-Dichloro-5-hydroxyy-2(5H)furanone (mucochloric acid) (I), which may exist in two (cyclic and acyclic) forms, reacts with trialkylphosphites under mild conditions to form two products, one and the most interesting of which is (II). Kinetic study if this process has shown the following reaction mechanism which is an unusual Arbuzov reaction with the elimination of HCl (but not RCl) from the intermediate (A):     

Absorption coefficient versus induced electric field dependence as a basis for optical bistability in a semiconductor

Using computer simulation, the feasibility of absorption optical bistability based on the dependence of the absorption coefficient on an electric field induced by a high-intensity laser pulse acting on a semiconductor and shifting the energy levels of atoms is demonstrated. Unlike the known mechanisms behind absorption optical bistability, here enhanced diffusion of charged particles does not change the rate of switching the system from the lower to upper state. Radiation-semiconductor interaction conditions are found when, after being switched to the upper state, the system remains in it until the laser pulse disappears.
