A Comprehensive HPTLC-Based Analysis of the Impacts of Temperature on the Chemical Properties and Antioxidant Activity of Honey

Honeys are commonly subjected to a series of post-harvest processing steps, such as filtration and/or radiation treatment and heating to various temperatures, which might affect their physicochemical properties and bioactivity levels. Therefore, there is a need for robust quality control assessments after honey processing and storage to ensure that the exposure to higher temperatures, for example, does not compromise the honey’s chemical composition and/or antioxidant activity. This paper describes a comprehensive short-term (48 h) and long-term (5 months) study of the effects of temperature (40 °C, 60 °C and 80 °C) on three commercial honeys (Manuka, Marri and Coastal Peppermint) and an artificial honey, using high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) analysis. Samples were collected at baseline, at 6 h, 12 h, 24 h and 48 h, and then monthly for five months. Then, they were analysed for potential changes in their organic extract HPTLC fingerprints, in their HPTLC-DPPH total band activities, in their major sugar composition and in their hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content. It was found that, while all the assessed parameters changed over the monitoring period, changes were moderate at 40 °C but increased significantly with increasing temperature, especially the honeys’ HPTLC-DPPH total band activity and HMF content.

Potent algicides based on the cyanobacterial alkaloid nostocarboline

[structure: see text] Nostocarboline and seven derivatives were prepared and displayed minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values >or=100 nM against the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806, Synechococcus PCC 6911, and Kirchneriella contorta SAG 11.81, probably via the inhibition of photosynthesis. The natural product hybrid nostocarboline/ciprofloxacin displayed additional antibacterial activity against several Gram-negative bacteria (MICs >or=0.7 microM). Nostocarboline can thus be considered a potent, selective, readily available, natural algicide.     

Relativistic study of the reaction pp → dπ: Formalism and comparison with experiment at Tp = 578 MeV

A detailed relativistic calculation of pp → πd is presented. The leading graph is the exchange of a nucleon and a pion. The πN amplitudes, including off-shell information, are input, together with relativistic dpn and πNN vertex functions. The dominant nucleon spectator term is calculated without uncontrolled approximations, and the relativistic pion antiparticle contribution is evaluated. The single nucleon exchange diagram is added. Higher order rescattering is treated by initial and final state distortion factors. All amplitudes and spin observables are calculated and a detailed comparison with the measured data at 578 MeV is made. The remaining observed discrepancies are traced to the pp spin-triplet waves.     

Hermite-Lagrange Two-Point Interpolation Via Peano Kernels

In a recent paper (JAT 53, 1988, pp. 17–25) Berger and Tasche present a constructive approach to Hermite-Lagrange two-point interpolation using Taylor's formula in the theory of right-invertible operators. In this paper we alternatively propose the argumentation via Peano kernels to obtain explicit representation formulas for this special kind of interpolation.
