BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which almost all the organs are involved. Neuropsychiatric SLE is of one of the major concerns in the clinical evaluation of this disease. Routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are often nonspecific or negative. In this study, we explored the use of diffusion tensor imaging in assisting with the diagnosis of SLE. METHODS: Data from 34 SLE patients (age range, 18-73 years) and 29 age-matched volunteers (age range, 29-64 years) were analyzed. MRI was performed on a 1.5-T clinical MR scanner with a quadrature head coil. The average diffusion constant (D(av)) and diffusion anisotropy maps [fractional anisotropy (FA)] were determined on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Regional diffusion measurements were made by region of interest in the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum (CC), anterior and posterior limb of the internal capsule (IC) and frontal lobe and thalamus. The diffusion distribution was fitted to a triple-Gaussian model. The mean of the brain tissue distribution was determined as a mean diffusion constant for the whole brain (BD(av)). Student's t test was used to determine the diffusion difference between SLE patients and control subjects. The SLE patients were separated into two groups according to their MRI results. A P value lower than .05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: Twenty of the 34 SLE patients with abnormal MRI results showed findings dominated by nonspecific white matter disease. The BD(av) and D(av) values of the frontal lobe, splenium CC and anterior IC were significantly higher in all SLE patients as compared with the control subjects. The SLE patients with normal MRI results also showed higher BD(av) and D(av) values in the frontal lobe, splenium and anterior and posterior limbs of the IC as compared with the control subjects. There was no significant difference in the D(av) values of the thalamus between the SLE patients and the control subjects. The BD(av) value in the SLE patient group was robustly correlated with the D(av) values of the frontal lobe, splenium and thalamus. These correlations were found to be similarly significant for the SLE patients with normal MRI findings. The diffusion anisotropy measurements showed that splenium CC had the highest FA value in both the control subjects and SLE patients. Overall, SLE patients had lower FA values in the genu and splenium CC as compared with the control subjects. In the group of patients with normal MRI findings, the FA values of the genu and splenium CC as well as the anterior IC were also lower than those in the control subjects. Pearson's correlation statistics revealed robust correlations between the measurements of D(av) and FA values in the SLE patient group. CONCLUSION: Quantitative diffusion imaging and diffusion anisotropy showed early changes in the brains of the SLE patients. Increased BD(av) and D(av) values of the frontal lobe as well as decreased anisotropy in the genu CC and anterior IC may represent preclinical signs of central nervous system involvement of SLE even when the routine MRI findings are negative or nonspecific. Quantitative diffusion analysis may prove to be useful in detecting the initial brain involvement of SLE and may enable monitoring of early disease progression and treatment efficacy.  相似文献

The synthesis of two phenylated bifunctional monomers, dimethyl 4-(4-(p-aminophenoxy)phenyl)-3,5,6-triphenylphthalate and dimethyl 4-(4-(4-(p-aminophenoxy)phenoxy)phenyl)-3,5,6-triphenylphthlate, was accomplished. Polymerization in solution or by a bulk polymerization procedure yielded a series of low molecular weight phenylated polyimides. The polymers were soluble in chlorinated hydrocarbons and exhibited thermal stabilities comparable to other polyimide systems.  相似文献

Furthermore, if G is 2-connected and δ(G) ≥ 4, then L2(G) is (2δ(G) ? 4)-Hamiltonian. For a connected graph G which is neither a path, a cycle, nor the graph K(1, 3) and for any positive integer n, the existence of an integer k such that Lm(G) is n-Hamiltonian for every mk is exhibited. Then, for the special case n = 1, bounds on (and, in some cases, the exact value of) the smallest such integer k are determined for various classes of graphs.  相似文献

DNA separation by fragment length can be readily achieved using sieving gels in electrophoresis. Separation by sequence has not been as simple, generally requiring adequate differences in native or induced conformation between single or hybridized strands or differences in thermal or chemical stability of hybridized strands. Previously, it was shown that four single‐stranded DNA (ssDNA) 76‐mers that differ by only a few A‐G substitutions could be separated based solely on sequence by adding guanosine‐5’‐monophosphate to the running buffer in capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). The separation was attributed to interactions of the ssDNA with self‐assembled guanine‐tetrad structures; however, subsequent studies of an expanded set of ten 76‐mers showed that the separation was a more general phenomenon that occurred at high salt concentrations. With the long‐term goal of using experimental and computational methods to provide insight into the basis of the separation, a set of ssDNA 15‐mers was designed including a poly(dT) 15‐mer and nine variants. Separations were performed using fluorescent‐labeled ssDNA in CZE with laser‐induced fluorescence detection. Results show that separation improves with increasing buffer concentration and decreasing temperature, due at least in part to longer separation times. Migration times increase with increasing purine content, with A having a much larger effect that G. Circular dichroism spectra of the mixtures of the strands suggest that the separation is not due to changes in conformation of the ssDNA at high salt concentrations.  相似文献

Weak consonants (e.g., stops) are more susceptible to noise than vowels, owing partially to their lower intensity. This raises the question whether hearing-impaired (HI) listeners are able to perceive (and utilize effectively) the high-frequency cues present in consonants. To answer this question, HI listeners were presented with clean (noise absent) weak consonants in otherwise noise-corrupted sentences. Results indicated that HI listeners received significant benefit in intelligibility (4 dB decrease in speech reception threshold) when they had access to clean consonant information. At extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels, however, HI listeners received only 64% of the benefit obtained by normal-hearing listeners. This lack of equitable benefit was investigated in Experiment 2 by testing the hypothesis that the high-frequency cues present in consonants were not audible to HI listeners. This was tested by selectively amplifying the noisy consonants while leaving the noisy sonorant sounds (e.g., vowels) unaltered. Listening tests indicated small (~10%), but statistically significant, improvements in intelligibility at low SNR conditions when the consonants were amplified in the high-frequency region. Selective consonant amplification provided reliable low-frequency acoustic landmarks that in turn facilitated a better lexical segmentation of the speech stream and contributed to the small improvement in intelligibility.  相似文献

The application of near infrared spectroscopy in bioprocessing has been limited by its dependence on calibrations derived from single bioreactor at a given time. Here, we propose a multiplexed calibration technique which allows calibrations to be built from multiple bioreactors run in parallel. This gives the flexibility to monitor multiple vessels and facilitates calibration model transfer between bioreactors. Models have been developed for the two key analytes: glucose and lactate using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines and using analyte specific information obtained from the feasibility studies. We observe slight model degradation for the multiplexed models in comparison to the conventional (single probe) models, decrease in r2 values from 89.4% to 88% for glucose whereas for lactate from 92% to 91.8% and a simultaneous increase in the number of factors as the model incorporates the inter-probe variability, nevertheless the models were fit for purpose. The results of this particular application of implementing multiplexed-NIRS to monitor multiple bioreactor vessels are very encouraging, as successful models have been built on-line and validated externally, which proffers the prospect of reducing timelines in monitoring the vessels considerably, and in turn, providing improved control.  相似文献

In reversed phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC), the validity of a multiparametric (MP) non-linear least-squares regression iterative method has been evaluated for 14 different aqueous mobile phases modified with one, two or three organic solvents [acetonitrile (ACN), methanol (MeOH), or tetrahydrofuran (THF)] for calculating the retention time of unretained compound t M and the regression parameter (slope b), based on the use of alkan-2-ones and alkyl aryl ketones homologous series. The determination of t M and b has been studied for eight binary (ACN?CH2O or MeOH?CH2O), 3 ternary (ACN?CMeOH?CH2O) and 3 quaternary (ACN?CMeOH?CTHF?CH2O) mobile phase systems on an Omnispher C18 column. The multiparametric calculated t M and b values were compared with those obtained by Guardino??s, and Grobler??s methods. The MP retention indices (RI) of ten monosubstituted benzenes with different functionality (hydroxyl, carbonyl, nitro, etc.) based on the alkan-2-ones retention index standards have been determined and compared for the different mobile phase compositions studied. The influence of organic modifier type, the nature of mobile phase system and water content on the variation of retention parameter studied in this work were discussed.  相似文献
