Proliferation dynamics of germinative zone cells in the intact and excitotoxically lesioned postnatal rat brain

Background  

The forebrain subventricular zone (SVZ)-olfactory bulb pathway and hippocampal subgranular zone (SGZ) generate neurons into adulthood in the mammalian brain. Neurogenesis increases after injury to the adult brain, but few studies examine the effect of injury on neural and glial precursors in the postnatal brain. To characterize the spatio-temporal dynamics of cell proliferation in the germinative zones, this study utilized a model of postnatal damage induced by NMDA injection in the right sensorimotor cortex at postnatal day 9.     

Synthesis of 1-alkyl-4-imidazolecarboxylates: a catch and release strategy

The novel alkyl N-methyl-N-polystyreneamino-2-isocyanoacrylate was used for the synthesis of 1-substituted imidazole-4-carboxylates utilizing a "catch and release" methodology. The reactions were performed under microwave irradiation, affording the title compounds in both high yields and chemical purity directly to solution, from the solid phase support.     

Concerted nature of AB ring formation in the enzymatic cyclization of squalene to hopenes

The cyclization of the A-B rings of squalene to hopene is studied computationally (DFT). A transition structure is found for a concerted, asynchronous pathway for the formation of chair-chair decalin carbocation. The computationally derived conformer leading to this asynchronous transition structure is remarkably similar to the analogous region of 2-azasqualene encapsulated by squalene-hopene cyclase recently reported by Schulz. A concerted A-B ring closure is likely to occur in the cyclization of squalene to hopene. [structure--see text]     

Quantum mechanical single-gold-nanocluster electroluminescent light source at room temperature

Electrically contacted gold-nanocluster arrays formed within electromigration-induced break junctions exhibit bright, field-dependent electroluminescence in the near infrared (650-800 nm). Intensity autocorrelation of spatially isolated individual nanocluster emission driven at high electrical frequency (f(ac)= approximately 200 MHz) reveals antibunched electroluminescence at room temperature. These results demonstrate the single quantum nature of several-atom gold molecules and suggest their use as room-temperature electrically driven single-photon sources.     

Application of electrochemical reactors for industrial waste-water treatment

The effectiveness of electrochemical reactors for industrial wastewater treatment has been improved since three-dimensional electrodes have been introduced; in fact, limitations of mass transfer can arise, due to the low concentrations of pollutants which may be involved in the process. Three-dimensional electrodes offer a very high electrode area per unit electrode volume and they can act as turbulence promoters or give rise to high linear electrolyte velocity, resulting in high values of mass transport coefficient. However, careful selection of operative parameters is needed in order to obtain high performance. This paper examines the results obtained in our laboratory on the cathodic reduction of copper at RVC electrodes; in particular the interference of dissolved oxygen is studied during the removal of copper from extremely diluted solutions (C < 10 ppm). Some results are also discussed on the removal of organic pollutants by electrochemical oxidation at three-dimensional anode consisting of a fixed bed of carbon pellets.     

Unprecedented conversion of triethylamine and disulfur dichloride into a thienopentathiepin and a heptathiocane

[reaction: see text] In a remarkable cascade reaction, triethylamine is converted into the thienopentathiepin 2a and the heptathiocane 3a by a preequilibrated solution of disulfur dichloride and DABCO in chloroform.     

Long range ordering in self-assembled Ni arrays on patterned Si

We have succeeded in aligning self-assembled structures by using a lithographically defined stripe. The 140 nm wide by 100 nm high SiO₂ strip is shown to guide the assembly of 500 nm latex spheres so that spheres are aligned along the strip and are in registration on either side of the strip. This method can be used to increase long-range ordering in magnetic storage systems without compromising the density. Inverse sphere Ni arrays were made by electrodeposition through the latex template. We also show that the hexagonal symmetry of the resulting inverse sphere Ni arrays can be simulated using the approach presented below.
