Rapid spectrophotometric determination of chlorate with dimedone bisthiosemicarbazone monohydrochloride

Summary Dimedone bisthiosemicarbazone monohydrochloride has been examined to evaluate its usefulness as a reagent for rapid and sensitive Spectrophotometric determination of chlorate (0.5–5.0 ppm) by oxidation of the reagent in 70% perchloric acid medium and measurement of the yellow product. The molar absorptivity at 417 nm is 1.86×10⁴ l·mole^–1·cm^–1. The relative standard deviation is 1.6% for 2.5 ppm of chlorate.

Zusammenfassung Die Verwendbarkeit von I als Reagens für die rasche und empfindliche spektrophotometrische Bestimmung von 0,5–5,0 ppm Chlorat durch Oxydation von I in 70%iger Perchlorsäure und Messung des gelben Reaktionsproduktes wurde untersucht. Study of the peak effect phenomenon in single crystals of 2H-NbSe2

The weakly pinned single crystals of the hexagonal 2H-NbSe₂ compound have emerged as prototypes for determining and characterizing the phase boundaries of the possible order-disorder transformations in the vortex matter. We present here a status report based on the ac and dc magnetization measurements of the peak effect phenomenon in three crystals of 2H-NbSe₂, in which the critical current densities vary over two orders of magnitude. We sketch the generic vortex phase diagram of a weakly pinned superconductor, which also utilizes theoretical proposals. We also establish the connection between the metastability effects and pinning.     

Optical Absorption in Periodic Graphene Superlattices: Perpendicular Applied Magnetic Field and Temperature Effects

A detailed study of the magneto‐optical absorption is presented for graphene superlattices (SLs) subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field. For a given temperature, this quantity exhibits a resonant peak structure whose characteristics depend on the magnetic field regime, circular polarization of light and SL barrier height. For the intermediate field regime, we demonstrated that the resonant peak structure of is directly correlated to the partial joint density of states. Specifically, the latter exhibits van Hove‐like singularities and peaks at energies where takes its maximum values. We also investigated the magnetoabsorption in the weak field regime for SLs exhibiting one and extra Dirac points in the absence of the field. It was found that for SLs with only one Dirac point, the absorption spectra consist of resonant peaks satisfying the same circular polarization dependent selection rule as that for pristine graphene, except for one of them. For SLs with extra Dirac points, the resonant peaks arise from transitions between singlet subbands or between doublet subbands and satisfy a circular polarization and peak intensity dependent selection rule. It was also found that the resonant structure of can be observed experimentally at room temperature in clean SLs.     

Self-assembling and phase coexistence of SW trimers as complex amphiphile analogues. I. Simulations

We analyse by discrete molecular dynamics the self-assembly of SW trimer particles that contain a different number of attractive and repulsive spheres. They also have different geometries: linear, obtuse, rectangular and equilateral. We identify that some of these molecules exhibit liquid–vapour equilibria while others do not. For all of them, we show the morphological phase diagram built up from the different supra-molecular structures formed by each type of trimer. We simulated 14 different systems with a total of 321 states. The main features of the supra-molecular structures depend only on the composition and geometry of the trimer: triple SW trimers do not form supra-structures, double SW trimers and single SW trimers form monolayers, bilayers and worm-like micelles. The liquid–vapour coexistence properties are also exhibited. These trimers can be used to model complex amphiphiles beyond the standard ones, such as the Gemini and the Bola surfactants as well as colloidal particles.     

A non-adiabatic quantum-classical dynamics study of the intramolecular excited state hydrogen transfer in ortho-nitrobenzaldehyde

Ab initio surface-hopping dynamics calculations have been performed to simulate the intramolecular excited state hydrogen transfer dynamics of ortho-nitrobenzaldehyde (o-NBA) in the gas phase from the electronic S(1) excited state. Upon UV excitation, the hydrogen is transferred from the aldehyde substituent to the nitro group, generating o-nitrosobenzoic acid through a ketene intermediate. The semiclassical propagations show that the deactivation from the S(1) is ultrafast, in agreement with the experimental measurements, which detect the ketene in less than 400 fs. The trajectories show that the deactivation mechanism involves two different conical intersections. The first one, a planar configuration with the hydrogen partially transferred, is responsible for the branching between the formation of a biradical intermediate and the regeneration of the starting material. The conversion of the biradical to the ketene corresponds to the passage through a second intersection region in which the ketene group is formed.     

Stereoselective enzymatic synthesis of monoglucosyl-myo-inositols with in vivo anti-inflammatory activity

The monoglucosyl-inositols α-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-4d-myo-inositol 3 and α-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→1)-1d-myo-inositol 4 were synthesized by a combined enzymatic transglucosylation and hydrolysis strategy, using cyclodextrin glucosyl transferase (CGTase) from Thermoanaerobacter sp., followed by hydrolysis with Aspergillus niger glucoamylase. The glucosides were separated by preparative HPLC and fully characterized by extensive 1D and 2D NMR studies. The structure of the regioisomer 4 was confirmed by X-ray crystallography of its perbenzoylated derivative 4a. Both isomers demonstrated in vivo anti-inflammatory activity at comparative levels to corticosterone on mouse ear oedema induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and in rat hind paw oedema induced by carrageenan.
