Arrays for the combinatorial exploration of cell adhesion

A new method for the fabrication of arrays of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkane thiols (ATs) on gold to combinatorially assay surfaces for cell adhesion is reported. A fluorous SAM, which is both cytophobic and solvophobic, was used as the background between the array features. The resulting solvophobic background permits the application of an assembly after conjugation strategy for fabrication. SAMs containing mixtures of ATs and peptide-terminated ATs were generated. Multiple cell types demonstrated differential and specific binding to these surfaces. Additionally, pluripotent human embryonic stem cells proliferated on surfaces generated by this method.     

Isobutene polymerization using a chelating diborane co-initiator

Lewis acidic diborane 1 (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1999, 121, 3244-3245) is highly effective for both proton- and cationogen-initiated isobutene polymerization in hydrocarbon media at low temperature. Reactions of diborane 1 with cumyl chloride and cumyl methyl ether were studied by variable-temperature 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy. At low temperatures stable ion pairs 2a and 2b are formed; at higher temperatures these ion-pairs form phenyl-1,3,3-trimethylindan (3) with concomitant release of HCl to form 1 in the case of 2a or degradation of the anion (2b). Reaction between Ph3C-Cl and diborane 1 resulted in the generation of an ion-pair 4 consisting of the Ph3C cation very weakly associated with the chelated, mu-Cl counteranion as revealed by X-ray crystallography.     

Studies on high-temperature amination reactions of aromatic chlorides using discrete Palladium-N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) complexes and in situ palladium/imidazolium salt protocols

The palladium catalysed coupling of aryl chlorides and amines can be readily achieved with short reaction times when carried out at high temperatures under thermal or microwave conditions. These coupling protocols are successful using two co-ordinate palladium-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes, or imidazolium salt protocols.     

On the Existence of Completely Saturated Packings and Completely Reduced Coverings

We prove the following conjecture of G. Fejes Toth, G. Kuperberg, and W.Kuperberg: every body K in either n-dimensional Euclidean or n-dimensional hyperbolic space admits a completely saturated packing and a completely reduced covering. Also we prove the following counterintuitive result: for every >0, there is a body K in hyperbolic n-space which admits a completely saturated packing with density less than but which also admits a tiling.     

Derived Lengths of Solvable Groups Having Five Irreducible Character Degrees I

Let G be a solvable group with five character degrees. We show that the derived length of G is at most 5. This verifies that the Taketa inequality, dl(G)|cd(G)|, is valid for solvable groups with at most five character degrees.     

Visual sensing of saccharides promoted by resorcinol condensation products

[structure: see text] Heating aqueous DMSO solutions of five saccharides in the presence of 1-3 reveals that each receptor promotes solution colors characteristic for each sugar. New compound 3 allows the direct correlation of sugar concentration with visible region absorbance and/or fluorescence intensities.
