Fabrication of surfaces with heterogeneous contact angle hysteresis enables extraction of droplet samples from bulk liquid volumes. These surfaces are created by printing high hysteresis wax islands onto low hysteresis superhydrophobic paper. The volume of the sampled droplets depends on the hysteresis of the printed islands, which can be controlled through both physical and chemical means. Physically, hysteresis is modified through the addition of surface roughness. Chemical hysteresis is tuned by changing the active chemical groups present on the wax surface. The observed control of the volume of sampled droplets, which is necessary for quantitative biochemical or chemical assays, extends to scenarios in which multiple droplet samples are extracted simultaneously from a single bulk droplet. Demonstration of the capacity of this technique to perform colorimetric glucose immunoassays is described. The ability to obtain well-defined microliter sample volumes and to extract several samples simultaneously from the same source enables the development of two-dimensional paper-based microfluidic devices for biomedical testing. 相似文献

Abstract Previous work has shown that guest-host ferroelectric systems incorporating dichroically absorbing dyes are suitable for use in colour display applications. These utilize either the dichroic absorption of a conventional dye, or the emission of a fluorescent dye. We present here the electrooptical properties of several advanced ferroelectric liquid crystals doped with a new fluorescent dye, coloured blue in emission. The data consists of measurements of tilt angle, response time, spontaneous polarization, and rotational viscosity, from which we conclude that certain hosts are not adversely affected by the fluorescent dopants. These results are then discussed in connection with the use of these mixtures in two novel colour display configurations, which are also presented, utilizing either the dichroic absorption or the polarized fluorescence of the fluorophore guests. 相似文献

Reinarz and Fonken have reported2 that the dibromocarbene adduct (1) of 1-methylcyclohexene, upon reaction with methylllthium at 0° in ether, produced exclusively the bicyclobutanes 2 and 3 in relative yields of 60% and 40%, respectively. Electron-deficient group 13 metals react with F(2) to give the compounds MF(2) (M = B, Al, Ga, In, Tl), which combine with F(2) to form a new class of very high electron affinity neutral molecules, (F(2))MF(2), in solid argon and neon. These (F(2))MF(2) fluorine metal difluoride molecules were identified through matrix IR spectra containing new antisymmetric and symmetric M-F stretching modes. The assignments were confirmed through close comparisons with frequency calculations using DFT methods, which were calibrated against the MF(3) molecules observed in all of the spectra. Electron affinities calculated at the CCSD(T) level fall between 7.0 and 7.8 eV, which are in the range of the highest known electron affinities. 相似文献

The possible mechanism of photoprotection by polyphenolic extracts of honeybush and the two most abundant polyphenols found in honeybush, hesperidin and mangiferin were determined using a mouse model. Ethanol: acetone soluble extracts and pure honeybush compounds were applied topically to the skin of SKH-1 mice before daily exposures to ultraviolet B (UVB) (180 mJ/cm2) for 10 days. The honeybush extracts reduced signs of sunburn, such as erythema, peeling and hardening of the skin and also significantly (P < 0.05) reduced edema, epidermal hyperplasia and the induction of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), GADD45 and OGG1/2 expression. The fermented honeybush extract significantly (P < 0.05) reduced lipid peroxidation and depletion of the antioxidant enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase. Hesperidin and mangiferin were less effective. These results show that extracts of honeybush and to some extent, hesperidin and mangiferin, renders protection against UVB-induced skin damage. The mechanisms investigated suggest that honeybush extracts protected the skin via modulation of induced-oxidative damage, inflammation and cell proliferation. Interest in Criegee intermediates (CIs), often termed carbonyl oxides, and their role in tropospheric chemistry has grown massively since the demonstration of laboratory-based routes to their formation and characterization in the gas phase. This article reviews current knowledge regarding the electronic spectroscopy of atmospherically relevant CIs like CH2OO, CH3CHOO, (CH3)2COO and larger CIs like methyl vinyl ketone oxide and methacrolein oxide that are formed in the ozonolysis of isoprene, and of selected conjugated carbene-derived CIs of interest in the synthetic chemistry community. Of the aforementioned atmospherically relevant CIs, all except CH2OO and (CH3)2COO exist in different conformers which, under tropospheric conditions, can display strikingly different thermal loss rates via unimolecular and bimolecular processes. Calculated photolysis rates based on their absorption properties suggest that solar photolysis will rarely be a significant contributor to the total loss rate for any CI under tropospheric conditions. Nonetheless, there is ever-growing interest in the absorption cross sections and primary photochemistry of CIs following excitation to the strongly absorbing 1ππ* state, and how this varies with CI, with conformer and with excitation wavelength. The later part of this review surveys the photochemical data reported to date, including a range of studies that demonstrate prompt photo-induced fission of the terminal O–O bond, and speculates about possible alternate decay processes that could occur following non-adiabatic coupling to, and dissociation from, highly internally excited levels of the electronic ground state of a CI. 相似文献
