Convexity estimates for nonlinear elliptic equations and application to free boundary problems

We prove the convexity of the set which is delimited by the free boundary corresponding to a quasi-linear elliptic equation in a 2-dimensional convex domain. The method relies on the study of the curvature of the level lines at the points which realize the maximum of the normal derivative at a given level, for analytic solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations. The method also provides an estimate of the gradient in terms of the minimum of the (signed) curvature of the boundary of the domain, which is not necessarily assumed to be convex.     

A Java-based control system for the Orsay tandem accelerator

A new control system was designed for the tandem MP-9 at Orsay. Because of the existing devices located on high voltage platforms and the lack of space inside the accelerator, in-house electronic cards based on micro-controllers and an optical fieldbus were developed to collect data. VME processors under VxWorks, a real time operating system, manage the fieldbus, concentrate the accelerator information and transmit it to the supervisory software through the ethernet network. This software consists of a collection of Java virtual machines (JVM) running on several Unix work-stations and PCs under Windows. Some of the Java virtual machines manage apparatus, instruments, local display and connections to an object database and VME concentrators. Other manage general synoptics. JVMs communicate between themselves with RMI protocol and JRPC with VME concentrators. So the supervisory software can be spread over several control stations throughout the network.     

The effect of methyl substitution on the spin-state in solid bis(methyl-substituted 2-pyridinalphenylimine)di(thiocyanato)iron(II)

Summary A series of iron(II) complexes of the type [FeL₂(NCS)₂] have been prepared and characterized, where L denotes the bidentate diimine ligands 2-pyridinalphenylimine orN-phenyl-2-pyridinaldimine (ppi) and its methyl-substituted derivatives. The electronic ground spin-state of iron(II) in these complexes has been studied by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements.     

Methylated and pegylated PLA–PCL–PLA block copolymers via the chemical modification of di‐hydroxy PCL combined with the ring opening polymerization of lactide

Methylated and pegylated poly(lactide)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(lactide) copolymers, PLA–P(CL‐co‐CLCH₃)–PLA and PLA–P(CL‐co‐CLPEG)–PLA, were prepared in three steps: combining the formation of carbanion‐bearing dihydroxylated‐PCL, the coupling of iodomethane or bromoacetylated α‐hydroxyl‐ω‐methoxy‐poly(ethylene glycol) onto the carbanionic PCL, and finally the ring opening polymerization of DL ‐lactide initiated by the preformed grafted diOH‐PCL copolymers. The resulting block copolymers exhibited lower crystallinity, melting temperature, and hydrophobicity with respect to the original PCL. Degradation of the grafted copolymers was investigated in the presence of Pseudomonas cepacia lipase and compared with that of the triblock copolymer precursor. It is shown that the presence of the grafted substituents affected the enzymatic degradation of PCL segments. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 4196–4205, 2005     

Measuring the one-particle excitations of ultracold fermionic atoms by stimulated Raman spectroscopy

We propose a Raman spectroscopy technique which is able to probe the one-particle Green function, the Fermi surface, and the quasiparticles of a gas of strongly interacting ultracold atoms. We give quantitative examples of experimentally accessible spectra. The efficiency of the method is validated by means of simulated images for the case of a usual Fermi liquid as well as for more exotic states: specific signatures of, e.g., a d-wave pseudogap are clearly visible.     

Dynamics of mechanisms: Some intrinsic properties

We propose in this paper to give some intrinsic results about, dynamics of mechanisms by using Lie group approach. This language allows to obtain two main results. The first one concerns a new definition of Lagrange's multipliers which is more conform to intuition. The second one gives the explicit linear combinations of the dynamic equations allowing their elimination.     

MgI2‐Mediated Chemoselective Cleavage of Protecting Groups: An Alternative to Conventional Deprotection Methodologies

The scope of MgI₂ as a valuable tool for quantitative and mild chemoselective cleavage of protecting groups is described here. This novel synthetic approach expands the use of protecting groups, widens the concept of orthogonality in synthetic processes, and offers a facile opportunity to release compounds from solid supports.
