Excess conductance fluctuations with peculiar temperature dependence from 1.4 to 250 K were observed in curved nanographite sheets with electrode gap lengths of 300 and 450 nm, whereas the conductance fluctuation is greatly suppressed above 4.2 K when the electrode gap lengths increase to 800 and 1000 nm. The former is discussed in the context of the presence of a small energy bandgap in the nanographite sheets, while the latter is attributed to the crossover from the coherent transport to diffusive transport regime.  相似文献

We demonstrate the use of X-ray phase contrast imaging with sub-microsecond temporal resolution to obtain quantitative visualization of dynamic fracture processes in brittle solids. We examine an amorphous solid (fused silica), a ceramic single crystal (single-crystal quartz), and a polycrystalline ceramic (boron carbide), in the form of single-edge notched specimens loaded using a three-point apparatus at nominal strain rates up to \(\sim \)800 s?1. We observe that the crack tip speed for boron carbide is relatively independent of mode I stress intensity factor rate (\(\dot {K}_{\mathrm {I}}\)) for these rates of loading, while that of fused silica and single-crystal quartz increases with \(\dot {K}_{\mathrm {I}}\). Further, for the amorphous and single crystal cases, we observe the development of a crack tip instability in the form of crack branching as the crack tip speed approaches 45% of the Rayleigh wave speed. This suggests that strain-rate-dependent mechanisms contribute to crack branching. Such mechanisms may, in turn, affect the macroscopic fracture properties of these materials.  相似文献

This paper presents the hybrid compliance-stiffness matrix method for stable analysis of elastic wave propagation in multilayered anisotropic media. The method utilizes the hybrid matrix of each layer in a recursive algorithm to deduce the stack hybrid matrix for a multilayered structure. Like the stiffness matrix method, the hybrid matrix method is able to eliminate the numerical instability of transfer matrix method. By operating with total stresses and displacements, it also preserves the convenience for incorporating imperfect or perfect interfaces. However, unlike the stiffness matrix, the hybrid matrix remains to be well-conditioned and accurate even for zero or small thicknesses. The stability of hybrid matrix method has been demonstrated by the numerical results of reflection and transmission coefficients. These results have been determined efficiently based on the surface hybrid matrix method involving only a subset of hybrid submatrices. In conjunction with the recursive asymptotic method, the hybrid matrix method is self-sufficient without hybrid asymptotic method and may achieve low error level over a wide range of sublayer thickness or the number of recursive operations.  相似文献

A hidden Markov model (HMM) system is presented for automatically classifying African elephant vocalizations. The development of the system is motivated by successful models from human speech analysis and recognition. Classification features include frequency-shifted Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and log energy, spectrally motivated features which are commonly used in human speech processing. Experiments, including vocalization type classification and speaker identification, are performed on vocalizations collected from captive elephants in a naturalistic environment. The system classified vocalizations with accuracies of 94.3% and 82.5% for type classification and speaker identification classification experiments, respectively. Classification accuracy, statistical significance tests on the model parameters, and qualitative analysis support the effectiveness and robustness of this approach for vocalization analysis in nonhuman species.  相似文献

Column-based refolding of complex and highly disulfide-bonded proteins simplifies protein renaturation at both preparative and process scale by integrating and automating a number of operations commonly used in dilution refolding. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model protein for refolding and oxido-shuffling on an ion-exchange column to give a refolding yield of 55% after 40 h incubation. Successful on-column refolding was conducted at protein concentrations of up to 10 mg/ml and refolded protein, purified from misfolded forms, was eluted directly from the column at a concentration of 3 mg/ml. This technique integrates the dithiothreitol removal, refolding, concentration and purification steps, achieving a high level of process simplification and automation, and a significant saving in reagent costs when scaled. Importantly, the current result suggests that it is possible to controllably refold disulfide-bonded proteins using common and inexpensive matrices, and that it is not always necessary to control protein-surface interactions using affinity tags and expensive chromatographic matrices. Moreover, it is possible to strictly control the oxidative refolding environment once denatured protein is bound to the ion-exchange column, thus allowing precisely controlled oxido-shuffling.  相似文献

This paper presents a concise and efficient scattering matrix formalism for stable analysis of elastic wave propagation in multilayered anisotropic solids. The formalism is capable of resolving completely the numerical instability problems associated with transfer matrix method, thereby obviating the extensive reformulation in its modified versions based on delta operator technique. In contrast to the earlier reflection matrix formalisms, all scattering matrices are obtained in a direct manner without invoking wave-propagator or scatterer operator concepts. Both local and global reflection and transmission matrices corresponding to scatterings in two and more layers are derived. The derivation of global scattering matrices in terms of the local ones is carried out concisely based on physical arguments to provide better insights into scattering mechanism. Another formulation which is even more succinct is also devised for obtaining the global scattering matrices directly from eigensolutions. The resultant expressions and algorithm are terse, efficient and convenient for implementation.  相似文献

We propose entropic measures for the strength of single-particle and two-particle interference in interferometric experiments where each particle of a pair traverses a multipath interferometer. Optimal single-particle interference excludes any two-particle interference, and vice versa. We report an inequality that states the compromises allowed by quantum mechanics in intermediate situations, and identify a class of two-particle states for which the upper bound is reached. Our approach is applicable to symmetric two-partite systems of any finite dimension.  相似文献

Nanoparticles of ZnO, MgO and NiO were produced from droplets of aqueous salt solution in the flame spray pyrolysis reactor. Conventional spray pyrolysis, in which electrical furnace reactor is used, is reported to produce nanoparticles only from acetate precursor. If the reactor pressure is low (60torr), nitrate salt precursor is also known to produce nanoparticles. In this paper, we report that nanoparticles are produced from nitrate as well as acetate salt precursor solution when propane–oxygen diffusion flame is used to decompose aqueous aerosol droplets. At low flame temperature, however, nanoparticles are not formed and the particle morphology is similar to the morphology produced by the conventional spray pyrolysis. At high flame temperature, nanoparticles are formed, regardless of the salt type. Nanoparticles are formed at lower flame temperature from acetate salts than from nitrate salts. All nanoparticle prepared in this work were fully crystallized and the size measured from transmission electron microscopy images was 30nm. This size agreed well with the particle size calculated from X-ray diffraction and specific surface area data.  相似文献
