Trapping and spectroscopy of hydrogen

I review the results and techniques used by the MIT H↑ group to achieve a fractional resolution of 2 parts in 10¹² in the 1S–2S transition in hydrogen [Cesar, D. Fried, T. Killian, A. Polcyn, J. Sandberg, I.A. Yu, T. Greytak, D. Kleppner and J. Doyle, Two-photon spectroscopy of trapped atomic hydrogen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 77 (1996) 255.] With some improvements, this system should deliver 100 times higher resolution with an improved signal count rate getting us closer to an old advertised goal of a precision of 1 part in 10¹⁸. While these developments are very important for the proposed test of the CPT theorem through the comparison with anti-hydrogen, some of the techniques used with hydrogen are not applicable to anti-hydrogen and I discuss some difficulties and alternatives for the trapping and spectroscopy of anti-hydrogen. Degradation behaviour of poly (methyl methacrylate-g-3-hydroxybutyrate) polymer films

Poly(methyl methacrylate-g-3-hydroxybutyrate) films were prepared from new graft polymers synthesised by an anionic grafting reaction of 3-butyrolactone (3-BL) on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The resulting graft polymers form a transparent film of a one phase system, as revealed by DSC measurements. A plasticisation effect was observed for film samples containing the PBL grafted chains. This effect increased with increasing amount of PBL in the graft copolymer. The mechanical properties of the films were investigated, and thermal, hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation behaviours were evaluated. Disintegration of the films was observed during their hydrolytic degradation in phosphate buffer.

High resolution X ray spectroscopy in light antiprotonic atoms

At the LEAR facility, CERN, antiprotonic Lα transitions in light elements have been investigated with a focussing crystal spectrometer. The high resolution of the experiment allowed for the first time to resolve in H the 2³P₀ state from the close lying states 2³P₂, 2¹P₁, and 2³P₁. In D the corresponding transitions were found to be more than an order of magnitude broader. To a large extent the results for H support the meson exchange model. Pure Point Diffraction Implies Zero Entropy for Delone Sets with Uniform Cluster Frequencies

Delone sets of finite local complexity in Euclidean space are investigated. We show that such a set has patch counting and topological entropy zero if it has uniform cluster frequencies and is pure point diffractive. We also note that the patch counting entropy vanishes whenever the repetitivity function satisfies a certain growth restriction.
