Anlaufmessungen in einem Rotationsviskosimeter

Zusammenfassung Der Umbau eines Rotationsviskosimeters (AgfaPhysik-Gerät) zu einem Elastoviskosimeter wird beschrieben. Mit Hilfe eines Oszillographen können Anlaufvorgänge im Zeitbereich von Hundertstel Sekunden aufgenommen werden. Das Arbeiten des Gerätes wird an Messungen an Newtonschen und nicht-Newtonschen Flüssigkeiten demonstriert.

Summary An Elastoviscometer is constructed on the basis of a rotational viscometer (Agfa-Physik instrument). With the help of an oscilloscope, prestationary phenomena in the time range of one hundredths of a second can be determined. The performance of the device is demonstrated at the example of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids.

The Bernstein–Orlicz norm and deviation inequalities

We introduce two new concepts designed for the study of empirical processes. First, we introduce a new Orlicz norm which we call the Bernstein–Orlicz norm. This new norm interpolates sub-Gaussian and sub-exponential tail behavior. In particular, we show how this norm can be used to simplify the derivation of deviation inequalities for suprema of collections of random variables. Secondly, we introduce chaining and generic chaining along a tree. These simplify the well-known concepts of chaining and generic chaining. The supremum of the empirical process is then studied as a special case. We show that chaining along a tree can be done using entropy with bracketing. Finally, we establish a deviation inequality for the empirical process for the unbounded case.     

Über die Restspannung bei geschichteten Dielectricis,insbesondere bei kolloiden Systemen

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine Methode und Apparatur zur Bestimmung der Restspannung beschrieben und deren Theorien entwickelt. Mit ihrer Hilfe lassen sich Spuren von Abbauprodukten, insbesondere bei photochemisch empfindlichen Stoffen, nachweisen. Die ersten Untersuchungen und die Ableitung der theoretischen Formeln stammen von unserem vor kurzem leider in jungen Jahren verstorbenen hochbegabten Mitarbeiter J. Schubert; wir fühlen uns verpflichtet, die begonnenen hochinteressanten Untersuchungen fortzusetzen und zu erweitern.

One-dimensional polariton solitons and soliton waveguiding in microcavities

We extend our recent results [O.A. Egorov et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 153904 (2009)] on half-light–half-matter polariton solitons in planar semiconductor microcavities operating in the strong coupling regime. We initiate discussion on the structure of the solitons in the momentum space and its link to the instability of the upper branch of the polariton bistability loop. Numerical results showing the soliton excitation by a seed pulse are presented.
