We contrast the two situations in which either a light beam is incident on a moving medium or a moving optical image is incident on a stationary medium. The principle of relativity suggests that the effects on the light of propagating through the medium should be similar. We find, however, that there are subtle differences which we can understand in terms of the relative alignment of the Poynting and wave vectors. Our analysis and experiments investigate both translational motion and rotation.  相似文献

A confusion over the concept of first integrals, which has been created in a recent paper by Hall [13] is clarified. The clear distinction between first integrals and functions which are first integrals only on a specific, fixed hypersurface is discussed. Hall's terminology of configurational invariants is adopted for the latter case. The possible relevance of knowing configurational invariants for a Hamiltonian system is illustrated by results concerning a weak form of the theory on complete integrability.  相似文献

Background  

Growth hormone (GH) plays an incompletely understood role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we use transgenic mice expressing a growth hormone antagonist (GHA) to explore the role of GH in regulating postnatal brain, spinal cord and body growth into adulthood. The GHA transgene encodes a protein that inhibits the binding of GH to its receptor, specifically antagonizing the trophic effects of endogenous GH.  相似文献

The Brownian dynamics of an optically trapped water droplet are investigated across the transition from over- to underdamped oscillations. The spectrum of position fluctuations evolves from a Lorentzian shape typical of overdamped systems (beads in liquid solvents) to a damped harmonic oscillator spectrum showing a resonance peak. In this later underdamped regime, we excite parametric resonance by periodically modulating the trapping power at twice the resonant frequency. The power spectra of position fluctuations are in excellent agreement with the obtained analytical solutions of a parametrically modulated Langevin equation.  相似文献

We discuss the relationship between the Noether point symmetries of the geodesic Lagrangian, in a (pseudo)Riemannian manifold, with the elements of the Homothetic algebra of the space. We observe that the classification problem of the Noether symmetries for the geodesic Lagrangian is equivalent with the classification of the Homothetic algebra of the space, which in the case of a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime is a well-known result in the literature.  相似文献

It is shown how stable, nonaqueous suspensions of fully exfoliated smectite clays such as Laponite and montmorillonite can be obtained. Suspensions in toluene and in a branched aliphatic solvent (polydecene) were characterized using elemental analysis, rheometry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. For Laponite, stable suspensions were obtained by adsorbing a dichain poly(isobutylene) based stabilizer to the particles. This approach did not result in full exfoliation for montmorillonite particles, possibly because the stabilizer was able to connect individual clay sheets at the edges during the treatment process. Instead, a quaternary ammonium surfactant, dimethyl dioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB), was first adsorbed to the clay. Subsequently, adsorption of the poly(isobutylene) based stabilizer to this pretreated clay resulted in fully exfoliated suspensions of montmorillonite. Suspensions of clay particles treated only with DODAB have been studied by several authors before and are included in this study for comparison. A detailed discussion of the suspension behavior of the different clay samples is given. The suspension routes presented here may enable further studies of the structure and flow behavior of suspensions of thin, flexible clay platelets as a function of aspect ratio.  相似文献

Racemization has a large impact upon the biological properties of molecules but the chemical scope of compounds with known rate constants for racemization in aqueous conditions was hitherto limited. To address this remarkable blind spot, we have measured the kinetics for racemization of 28 compounds using circular dichroism and 1H NMR spectroscopy. We show that rate constants for racemization (measured by ourselves and others) correlate well with deprotonation energies from quantum mechanical (QM) and group contribution calculations. Such calculations thus provide predictions of the second‐order rate constants for general‐base‐catalyzed racemization that are usefully accurate. When applied to recent publications describing the stereoselective synthesis of compounds of purported biological value, the calculations reveal that racemization would be sufficiently fast to render these expensive syntheses pointless.  相似文献

We report observations of poly(methyl methacrylate) films modified by the synergistic effect of solvent exposure and mechanical stress applied by the tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM). We show that these modifications are sensitive to polymer molecular weight as well as solvent strength and the force applied by the tip. Small-area scanning often produces localized patches of raised material as well as depressed areas. The volume change associated with the depressed areas generally increases with increasing solvent strength, increasing applied normal force, and decreasing polymer molecular weight. In contrast, the volume change associated with the raised patches is greatest for 25-145K Mw films in 60 and 100% ethanol solutions. In each case, the normal force applied by the AFM tip must exceed a threshold to significantly modify the surface; this threshold is associated with an increase in lateral force applied by the AFM tip during small-area scanning. We attribute the raised patches to mechanically enhanced swelling due to diffusion of solvent into near-surface material. Permanent net volume loss, when observed, is attributed to localized polymer dissolution.  相似文献
