Interpretation of the polyelectrolyte and antipolyelectrolyte effects of poly(N‐vinylimidazole‐co‐sodium styrenesulfonate) hydrogels

Hydrogels of N‐vinylimidazole (VI) and sodium styrenesulfonate (SSS) were synthesized in aqueous solution by radical crosslinking copolymerization with N,N′‐methylene‐bis(acrylamide) as crosslinker. Swelling in several saline solutions was measured for hydrogel samples synthesized with different comonomer concentrations (C_T = 10, 25, or 40%) and with SSS mole fractions covering a broad range (f_SSS = 0–0.7), while the crosslinker ratio was 2 wt % in all cases. The degree of swelling in aqueous solution with a specific ionic strength (μ), plotted versus the SSS composition of the feed, shows a minimum for any set of samples synthesized with a fixed C_T. The dependence of swelling on μ shows both polyelectrolyte (f_SSS beyond the minimum) and antipolyelectrolyte behaviors (in the low f_SSS limit). It was found that the nonGaussian factor of the crosslinking density and the polymer‐solvent interaction parameter increase with f_SSS for any C_T. Moreover, in the low f_SSS limit, the osmotic swelling pressure is governed not only by the ionic contribution, but also by the polymer‐solvent mixing and, the concentration of mobile counterions inside the gel is not proportional to the net fixed charge but to the addition of cationic and anionic side groups, what discards the formation of ionic pairs. Growth and study of single crystals of (Na,K)NbO<Subscript>3</Subscript> solid solutions

(Na, K)NbO₃ crystals with a perovskite structure and a KNbO₃ content up to 40 mol % were grown from flux with the use of the solvent NaBO₂. The dielectric measurements of the crystals grown revealed phase transitions that had never been observed before in ceramic samples.     

Phase diagram of multilayer magnetic structures

Multilayer ferromagnet-layered antiferromagnet (Fe/Cr) structures frustrated because of roughness of interlayer boundaries were studied by mathematical modeling methods. The phase diagram of a three-layer system (plotted as film thickness versus the degree of roughness of the interfaces) was obtained, and the order parameter distributions in each phase were determined. The character of phase transitions in this system was studied. The applicability range of the Slonczewski magnetic proximity model was determined.     

Contributions to the synthesis of some ferrocene-containing antibiotics

This Review discusses the synthesis and characterization by our Group of new antibiotics belonging to the class of penicillins, cephalosporins and rifamycins with ferrocenyl and 1, 1′-ferrocenilene residues in the molecule. As reactants for 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) and 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) the following were used: 1, 1-bis(chlorocarbonyl)ferrocene, ferrocenyl sulfochloride, 1, 1′-ferrocenylenedisulfochloride and thioglycolic acids S-modified with ferrocene. In the synthesis of rifamycins, the hydrazides of the thioglycolic acids, S-modified with ferrocene, were employed as nucleophilic agents. The synthesized intermediates were characterized by elemental analysis, TLC, IR, UV and ¹H NMR spectra. The characterization of new antibiotics was made by TLC, IR and UV spectral analysis. Biological activity was tested on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Good activity is reported towards Gram-positive bacteria in the case of derivatives containing residues of thioglycolic acid S-modified with ferrocene, the antibacterial activity being similar to that of amoxicillin, carbenicillin and cephalothin. All compounds are inactive towards Gram-negative bacteria.

Optical diagnostics of dispersing He plasma

An experimental study has been made of the characteristics of radiation from a dispersing helium plasma. From measurements of the space-time dependence of the line intensities of the helium 2³P — n³D series we obtained the distribution of the populations of the n³D levels for n=3–10. The study has shown that over a wide range of conditions the high-lying levels (n=5–10) are in equilibrium with electrons while a substantial deviation from equilibrium is observed for levels n=3, 4. From the energy distribution of the populations of the upper levels we determined the space-time dependence of the electron temperature, which reflects the process of effective electron cooling during dispersal of the plasma. The gas temperature was estimated from the populations of helium singlet and triplet levels with n=5. The time distribution of the electron density in the plasma was found from the Stark broadening of the spectral lines.Deceased.V. D. Simulating the Kinematic Dynamo Forced by Heteroclinic Convective Velocity Fields

We report on the integration of the kinematic dynamo problem in a spherical domain forced by velocity fields that are convective fluid flows resulting from a bifurcation analysis of the spherical Bénard problem. We derive a code based on generalized spherical harmonics that ensures a divergence-free magnetic field. We determine the growth or decay of a magnetic field in the kinematic dynamo equation for various physically relevant velocity fields which are stationary as well as time-periodic and chaotic. Velocity signals that are produced by heteroclinic cycles are used as an input to an energy-saturated kinematic dynamo equation that limits the growth of the linearly unstable modes. Preliminary calculations indicate the possibility of reversals of the magnetic field for this case of forcing. Received 8 October 1996 and accepted 28 April 1997
