Polymorphism in alternating polyketones studied by x-ray diffraction and calorimetry

Differential scanning calorimetry and high temperature x-ray diffraction were used to study the perfectly alternating copolymer of ethene and carbon monoxide (polyketone; POKC2). It was found that oriented POK-C2 fibers show a crystalline phase transition at a temperature between 110–125°C with a 10% change in crystalline density. At this temperature, the crystal structure reported recently (POK-α) is transformed to a crystal structure that was reported in the past for room temperature imperfectly alternating polyketone. The latter structure will be designated as POK-β. The influence of chain defects on the crystal structure was studied by synthesizing terpolymers (POK-C2/C3), in which small amounts of propylene-CO units are incorporated into the polymer backbone. The resulting terpolymers differ from the copolymer by the presence of methyl groups randomly distributed along the polyketone backbone chain. Evidence is presented that indicates that the methyl groups are built into the crystal lattice as defects. With more than 5 mole-% propene the terpolymer fibers crystallize exclusively in the β-modification. Below this level the α/β ratio (at room temperature) increases with decreasing amounts of propene. Both as-synthesized and as-spun POK-C2 were found to consist of both POK-α and POK-β; the α/β ratio depends on the method of preparation. Because the drawn POK-C2 fibers studied here consist exclusively of POK-α, the process of spinning and drawing leads to the transformation of unoriented β-rich material into oriented POK-α. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Kinetics of the reactions of the IO radical with dimethyl sulfide,methanethiol, ethylene,and propylene

The reactions of IO radicals with CH₃SCH₃, CH₃SH, C₂H₄, and C₃H₆ have been studied using the discharge flow method with direct detection of IO radicals by mass spectrometry. The absolute rate constants obtained at 298 K are the following: IO + CH₃SCH₃ → products (1): k₁ = (1.5 ± 0.2) × 10^?14; IO + CH₃SH → products (2): k₂ = (6.6 ± 1.3) × 10^?16; IO + C₂H₄ →products (3): k₃ < 2 × 10^?16; IO + C₃H₆ → products (4): k₄ < 2 × 10^?16 (units are cm³ molecule^?1 s^?1). CH₃S(O)CH₃ and HOI were found as products of reactions (1) and (2), respectively. The present lower value of k₁ compared to our previous determination is discussed.     

Nouveaux thiochlorures de molybdène(II): Mo6Cl10Y (Y = S,Se, Te): Structure et propriétés magnétiques et électriques

The thiochlorides Mo₆Cl₁₀Y (Y = S, Se, Te) have been prepared; they are isostructural with Nb₆I₁₁, space group Pccn, and have four formula units per unit cell. The X-ray structure of Mo₆Cl₁₀Se has been determined from three-dimensional single-crystal counter data and refined to a final R value of 0.053 for 3350 independent reflections. The most important result concerning this structure is a statistical distribution of the Se atom on the unit (Mo₆X′₈) with $\text{X′ ?}\text{7}\text{8}\text{Cl}\text{+}\text{1}\text{8}\text{Se}$: so the compound Mo₆Cl₁₀Se must be formulated $\text{(Mo}{}_6\text{Cl}{}_7\text{Se)Cl}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>4</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{Cl}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>2</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$. The diamagnetic and dielectric behavior of these new thiochlorides is discussed.     

The lowest triplet state of benzene: Differences in electronic structure in two crystalline modifications of a cyclohexane host

Microwave induced delayed phosphorescence (MIDP) measurements have been performed in the 00 bands of the phosphorescence spectrum of benzene dissolved in two phases of cyclohexane. From the relative radiative rates for decay of the three zero-field levels it is concluded that on the average the symmetry of the electronic structure is lower than D_2h. In the monoclinic low temperature stable phase of cyclohexane (phase II) the structure is approximately antiquinoidal, and in the metastable phase III it is approximately quinoidal.

Summary The existence of a joint asymptotic distribution for the windings of a three-dimensional Brownian motion around a finite number of straight lines is obtained. This complements the recent studies, by Pitman- Yor, and the authors, of the joint asymptotic distribution for the windings of planar Brownian motion around a finite number of points.The following principle governs the passage from results in the plane to results in space:Let B be a three-dimensional Brownian motion, and P ₁, ..., P _k, k planes which intersect two by two. Then, the convergences in distribution concerning the planar Brownian motions B ⁱ (1ik), defined respectively as the orthogonal projections of B on P _i (1ik), take place jointly, and the corresponding limit variables are independent.
