Liquid chromatography particle beam-mass spectrometry with massive cluster impact

A new liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technique is described that utilizes a particle beam interface to transport and deposit desolvated analyte molecules onto a target surface that is bombarded by a primary beam of massive multiply charged glycerol cluster ions to generate secondary ions for mass analysis. The massive cluster ion beam is generated by electrohydrodynamic emission from a solution of 1. 5-M ammonium acetate in glycerol. In the present instrumental configuration the massive cluster ion gun is placed above the target probe and the particle beam interface is connected through a side port of the mass spectrometer. The massive cluster ion beam and particle beam are intercepted by a target surface substituted for a conventional ion volume. The target surface is positioned such that it is ～ 45 ° to the primary cluster ion beam, the particle beam, and the mass analyzer axis. This geometric orientation represents a compromise among the performances of these three elements. The feasibility of this liquid chromatography-particle beam on-line with massive cluster impact is demonstrated by flow injections of acetylcholine chloride and gramicidin S. Spectra generated from this preliminary study indicate promise for routine liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry of polar compounds by using a robust inlet and an effective generation of secondary ions without an added matrix.     

Low-level determination of plutonium by gamma and L X-ray spectroscopy

We have developed an analytical method for detection of²³⁹Pu in aqueous samples at concentrations as low as 10^–10M. This nuclear counting technique utilizes the uranium L X-rays, which follow the alpha-decay of plutonium. Because L X-rays are specific for the element and not for the individual isotope, the isotopic composition of the plutonium sample must be known. The counting efficiency in the 11–23 keV range is determined from a plutonium standard, and the concentration of the sample is then calculated from the L X-ray count and the isotopic composition. The total L X-ray count is corrected for possible contributions from other radionuclides present as impurities by measuring the low-energy gamma-spectrum for each contaminant to establish specific photon/X-ray ratios. The ratios are important when²⁴¹Pu and²⁴²Pu are measured, because the respective decay chain members produce non-U L X-rays. This new method can replace the use of labor-intensive radiochemical separation techniques and elaborate activation methods for analysis of²³⁹Pu in aqueous samples. It is also applicable for assaying plutonium in liquid wastes that pose possible hazards to the environment.

Synthesis of Insect Sex Pheromones and Their Homologues I. (Z,E)-9, 11-Alkadienyl Acetates

(Z, E)-9, 11-Tetradecadienyl-l-acetate (1), a major component of the sex pheromone of Spodoptera litura (F.), and (Z, E}-9, 11-pentadecadienyl-1-acetate (2) were synthesized by the Wittig reaction between (E)-2-alkenal (3) and the ylid derived from 9-hydroxynonyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (4).     

Photolysis of Isoniazid

The UV light irradiation of isoniazid (I) in methanol four products, isonicotinic acid (II), isonicotinamide (III), N, N′-bis(isonicotinic acid)hydrazide (IV) and isonicotinaldehyde isonicotinyl hydrazone (V), in ethanol three products, (III), (IV) and acetaldehyde isonicotinyl hydrazone (VI) were isolated and identified. Also, the photoreaction mechanism of isoniazid in methanol and ethanol were discussed.     

Experimental and theoretical study on the olefin metathesis of alkenyl Baylis-Hillman adducts using second-generation Grubbs catalyst

[reaction: see text] We have investigated the olefin metathesis from alkenyl Baylis-Hillman adducts using second-generation Grubbs catalyst. In the experiment, the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) product could not be found, while the cross-metathesis (CM) products were found. The computational studies provided consistent explanations for the experimental result. The most limiting factor for the RCM process using second-generation Grubbs catalyst is caused by the high strain and steric effect in the metallacyclobutane intermediates.     

Syntheses of double- and triple-decker clusters of osmium and cobalt metals linked by cyclotetradeca-1,8-diyne ligands

Photoirradiation of Os₃(CO)₁₀(C₁₄H₂₀) (1) in n-hexane produces the double-decker cluster [Os₃(CO)₉(C₂₈H₄₀)] [Os₃(CO)₁₀] (7), which can also be prepared from the reaction of Os₃(CO)₉(C₂₈H₄₀) (2) and Os₃(CO)₁₀(NCMe)₂. Further reaction of 7 with Os₃(CO)₁₀(NCMe)₂ affords the triple-decker cluster [Os₃(CO)₉(C₂₈H₄₀)][Os₃(CO)₁₀]₂ (8). The bis(diyne) complex Os₃(CO)₈(C₁₄H₂₀)₂ (3) reacts with Os₃(CO)₁₀(NCMe)₂ sequentially to yield the double-decker cluster [Os₃(CO)₈(C₁₄H₂₀)₂][Os₃(CO)₁₀] (4) and the triple-decker cluster [Os₃(CO)₈(C₁₄H₂₀)₂][Os₃(CO)₁₀]₂ (5). Treatment of 3 with Co₂(CO)₈ at room temperature leads to the mixed-metal triple-decker cluster [Os₃(CO)₈(C₁₄H₂₀)₂][Co₂(CO)₆]₂ (6), while the reaction of 2 and Co₂(CO)₈ produces [Os₃(CO)₉(C₂₈H₄₀)][Co₂(CO)₆]₂ (9) and [Os₂(CO)₆(C₂₈H₄₀)][Co₂(CO)₆]₂ (10). Compound 10, which involves cluster degradation from Os₃ to Os₂, has been structurally characterized by an X-ray diffraction study.
