The optical rotations for six organic molecules (verbenone, fenchone, camphor, nopinone, Tr?ger's base, dimethyl-cyclopropane) and the transition metal complex [Co(en)(3)](3+) were calculated as a function of wavelength using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). In the calculations, a realistic behavior of the optical rotation in the vicinity of an electronic transition was obtained by using a phenomenological damping parameter of the order of 0.2 eV (0.007 au). In comparison with experiment, for the molecules studied here the sign and order of magnitude of the optical rotation as well as the excitation energies were reasonably well reproduced in most computations. These findings apply to the investigated wavelength ranges typically between about 200 and 650 nm even when using comparatively small basis sets. Such calculations might therefore routinely be applied to help assigning the absolute configurations of chiral molecules. Supplementary calculations of the circular dichroism (CD) and comparison with experimental CD were used for further assessment of the optical rotation calculations. In particular, a combined study of optical rotation and CD turned out to be useful in cases where the optical rotatory dispersion in a specific energy range exhibits a considerable blue or red shift or where it is difficult to reproduce because of an interplay of several competing Cotton effects. The influence of basis set, density functional, and the damping parameter was also investigated.  相似文献

In this work, we present the first calculation of the resonance Raman scattering (RRS) spectrum of rhodamine 6G (R6G) which is a prototype molecule in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The calculation is done using a recently developed time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method, which uses a short-time approximation to evaluate the Raman scattering cross section. The normal Raman spectrum calculated with this method is in good agreement with experimental results. The calculated RRS spectrum shows qualitative agreement with SERS results at a wavelength that corresponds to excitation of the S(1) state, but there are significant differences with the measured RRS spectrum at wavelengths that correspond to excitation of the vibronic sideband of S(1). Although the agreement with the experiments is not perfect, the results provide insight into the RRS spectrum of R6G at wavelengths close to the absorption maximum where experiments are hindered due to strong fluorescence. The calculated resonance enhancements are found to be on the order of 10(5). This indicates that a surface enhancement factor of about 10(10) would be required in SERS in order to achieve single-molecule detection of R6G.  相似文献

Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopic (DRIFTS) measurements (4000-1500 cm(-1)) and the results of neutron powder diffraction have been combined to study the structure of adsorption complexes of water in a NaX zeolite at different water loadings (25, 48, 72, and 120 water molecules per unit cell, respectively). Sharp bands corresponding to non-hydrogen-bonded OH groups of water molecules and broad associate bands due to hydrogen-bonded molecules are observed in the DRIFT spectra. We observe a remarkable downshift of the high-frequency associate band in a narrow temperature interval when the water amount decreases from 120 to 72 molecules per unit cell, which could signify some kind of "phase transition" for the water inside the zeolite cavities. Neutron powder diffraction results show that water molecules are predominantly localized in or near the 12-ring windows. Water molecules with hydrogen-bonded and non-hydrogen-bonded OH groups were found, in agreement with the observation of sharp and broad bands in the DRIFT spectra. We find strong evidence for the formation of cyclic hexamers of water molecules localized in the 12-ring windows, which are further stabilized by hydrogen bonds to framework oxygen atoms.  相似文献

The rate of ion transfer across the supported liquid membrane (SLM) is studied in the rotating diffusion cell (RDC), varying the chemical composition of the SLM from net-cloth supported gel membranes to radiation-grafted polymer membranes. Steady-state current–voltage curves are measured as a function of the rotation rate, and values for the standard rate constant, k0, are determined for a series of tetraalkylammonium cations from the analysis of the initial slopes and the diffusion limiting currents. The analysis gives values for k0 of the order of 10−2–10−4 cm s−1, which is in rather good agreement with the values found in the literature for this type of the system. As controlled delivery of ionic drugs can be achieved by control of the electric current, whereby the SLM acts as a drug reservoir, the study is extended to the release of the anti-Alzheimer drug Tacrine, where ion-exchange fibers are embedded in the membrane as the drug carrier. Our previous transient experiments are also discussed, and it is suggested that their interpretation is seriously hampered by the non-uniform potential distribution, which brings about high capacitive currents.  相似文献

A current challenge in the area of responsive materials is the design of reagents and polymers that provide controlled release of phenols in environments that are less polar than water. In these contexts, a molecular strategy that enables release of nearly any phenol with predictable and tunable rates and without complication from background hydrolysis would substantially increase the precision with which materials can be designed to respond to a particular signal. This Article addresses this problem at the fundamental level by describing the design, synthesis, and physical-organic characterization of two small molecule self-immolative spacers that are capable of releasing phenols in organic and mixed organic-aqueous solutions. The rate of release from these small molecule model systems is predictable and tunable, such that nearly any type of phenol, regardless of pK(a) value, can be released in neutral solutions without complications from nonspecific background release due to hydrolysis. Furthermore, the release properties of the spacers can be predicted from bond length and conformation data (obtained from crystal structures). On the basis of these results, it should now be possible to incorporate these design elements into materials to enable precise response properties in environments that are not 100% aqueous.  相似文献

Blinding eye diseases such as corneal neovascularization, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration are driven by pathological angiogenesis. In cancer, angiogenesis is key for tumor growth and metastasis. Current antiangiogenic treatments applied clinically interfere with the VEGF signaling pathway—the main angiogenic pathway—to inhibit angiogenesis. These treatments are, however, only partially effective in regressing new pathologic vessels, and the disease relapses following cessation of treatment. Moreover, the relapse of pathological angiogenesis can be rapid, aggressive and more difficult to treat than angiogenesis in the initial phase. The manner in which relapse occurs is poorly understood; however, recent studies have begun to shed light on the mechanisms underlying the revascularization process. Hypotheses have been generated to explain the rapid angiogenic relapse and increased resistance of relapsed disease to treatment. In this context, the present review summarizes knowledge of the various mechanisms of disease relapse gained from different experimental models of pathological angiogenesis. In addition, the basement membrane—a remnant of regressed vessels—is examined in detail to discuss its potential role in disease relapse. Finally, approaches for gaining a better understanding of the relapse process are discussed, including prospects for the management of relapse in the context of disease.Subject terms: Inflammation, Experimental models of disease  相似文献

Pressurized hot water extraction with a flow-through system was used to extract hemicelluloses and lignin from birch sawdust. The structure of the extraction residue was studied on various levels. Molecular mass distributions were determined with gel permeation chromatography and the crystal structure of cellulose was characterized using wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Information on the short-range order of cellulose microfibrils and on the nanoscale pore structure was obtained with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and the micrometre scale cellular morphology was imaged with X-ray microtomography. The pressurized hot water treatment was observed to increase the lateral width of cellulose crystallites, determined with WAXS, whereas a possible small decrease in the crystallinity of cellulose compared to native wood was detected. The molecular mass of cellulose remained at a relatively high level. According to the SAXS results, a tighter lateral association of cellulose microfibrils was observed in the extracted samples, which possibly led to opening of pores between bundles of microfibrils, as indicated by an increased specific surface area. A reduction in the thickness of the fibre cell walls was evidenced by X-ray microtomography.  相似文献
