This paper attempts to link the kinetics of Cd and metallothionein turnover in the intertidal marine snail Littorina littorea. The results demonstrate that the turnover of metallothionein is tissue dependent. Metallothionein has an estimated half-life of 69 and 160 days in the gills and kidney, respectively. The half-life could not be calculated for metallothionein in the digestive gland and is probably much longer than the other two tissues. Cadmium elimination from the gill and kidney is considerably slower than the respective metallothioneins (half-life in excess of 300 days) indicating closed cycling of the metal in these tissues. In contrast, cadmium levels in the digestive gland continue to increase during the detoxification period reflecting some remobilization from other tissues. Metallothionein turnover is extremely slow in Littorina when compared with mammals and other bivalve molluscs: even though metallothionein degradation is measurable in some gastropod tissues, the released cadmium may induce de novo metallothionein synthesis to which cadmium becomes resequestered. The slow metallothionein turnover rates and the lack of significant cadmium excretion testify to the relatively stable nature of the cadmium-metallothionein complex in this invertebrate.  相似文献

We consider bin-packing variations related to the well-studied problem of maximizing the total number of pieces packed into a fixed set of bins. We show that, when the objective is to minimize the total number of pieces packed subject to the constraint that no unpacked piece will fit, no polynomial-time relative approximation algorithm exists (unless, of course,P=NP). That is, we prove that it isNP-hard to guarantee packing no more than a constant multiple of the optimal number of pieces, for any constant. This appears to be the first bin-packing problem for which this property has been demonstrated. Furthermore, this result also holds for the allied packing variant which seeks to minimize the maximum number of pieces packed in any single bin. We find the situation to be markedly better for the problem of maximizing the minimum number of pieces in any bin. If all bins possess the same capacity, we prove that the familiar SPF rule is an absolute approximation algorithm with additive constant 1, and can therefore be regarded as a best possible heuristic. For the more general and difficult case in which bin capacities may differ, it turns out that SPF fails to qualify as even a relative approximation algorithm. However, we devise an implementation of the well-known FFD heuristic, which we show to be a relative approximation algorithm, yielding a worst-case performance ratio of 1/2 with additive constant 0. Organotin concentrations were measured in water, sediments and clams (Ruditapes decussatus) from 11 sites in the Ria Formosa lagoon, Portugal, in 1992–93. Results showed a marked spatial pattern of tributyltin (TBT) and dibutyltin concentrations. The highest organotin concentrations were observed at Olhão (site 5), where the most important fishing harbour of the Southern coast of Portugal is located. Results indicated that fishing vessels, moored in the harbour at Olhão (site 5), were the major source of organotin contamination to the lagoon. No significant seasonal trend was observed, suggesting a continuous input of organotin compounds throughout the year. In several areas of the lagoon the TBT burdens in R. decussatus could have deleterious developmental effects. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The objective of our study was to test the hypothesis that subtle brain abnormality can be present in pediatric sickle cell disease (SCD) patients normal by conventional MR imaging (cMRI). We examined 50 SCD patients to identify those patients who were normal by cMRI. Quantitative MR imaging (qMRI) was then used to map spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) in a single slice in brain tissue of all 50 patients and in 52 healthy age-similar controls. We also used a radiofrequency (RF) pulse to saturate blood spins flowing into the T1 map slice, to characterize the effect of blood flow on brain T1. Abnormalities were noted by cMRI in 42% (21/50) of patients, with lacunae in 32%, and encephalo malacia in 20%. Brain T1 in patients normal by cMRI was significantly lower than controls, in caudate, thalamus, and cortex (p < or =0.007), and regression showed that gray matter T1 abnormality was present in caudate and cortex by age 4 (p < or =0.002). In patients abnormal by cMRI, T1 reductions in gray matter were larger and more significant. White matter T1 was not significantly increased except in patients abnormal by cMRI. RF saturation in a slab below the T1 map produced no significant change in T1, compared to RF saturation in a slab above the T1 map, suggesting that inflow of untipped spins in blood does not cause an artifactual shortening of T1. Gray matter T1 abnormality was present in patients normal by cMRI, while white matter T1 abnormality was present only in patients also abnormal by cMRI. These findings suggest that gray matter is selectively vulnerable to damage in pediatric SCD patients and that white matter damage occurs later in the disease process. Our inability to find an effect from saturation of inflowing blood implies that rapid perfusion cannot account for T1 reduction in gray matter.  相似文献

Many useful classes of graphs can in principle be recognized with finite batteries of obstruction tests. One of the most fundamental tests is to determine whether an arbitrary input graph containsK4in the immersion order. Light quality has been reported to influence the phytochemical profile of broccoli sprouts/microgreens; however, few studies have researched the influence on mature broccoli. This is the first study to investigate how exposing a mature glasshouse grown vegetable brassica, Tenderstem® broccoli, to different light wavelengths before harvest influences the phytochemical content. Sixty broccoli plants were grown in a controlled environment glasshouse under ambient light until axial meristems reached >1 cm diameter, whereupon a third were placed under either green/red/far-red LED, blue LED, or remained in the original compartment. Primary and secondary spears were harvested after one and three weeks, respectively. Plant morphology, glucosinolate, carotenoid, tocopherol, and total polyphenol content were determined for each sample. Exposure to green/red/far-red light increased the total polyphenol content by up to 13% and maintained a comparable total glucosinolate content to the control. Blue light increased three of the four indole glucosinolates studied. The effect of light treatments on carotenoid and tocopherol content was inconclusive due to inconsistencies between trials, indicating that they are more sensitive to other environmental factors. These results have shown that by carefully selecting the wavelength, the nutritional content of mature broccoli prior to harvest could be manipulated according to demand.  相似文献

We have detected the four 18 cm OH lines from the z approximaetely 0.765 gravitational lens toward PMN J0134-0931. The 1612 and 1720 MHz lines are in conjugate absorption and emission, providing a laboratory to test the evolution of fundamental constants over a large lookback time. We compare the HI and OH main line absorption redshifts of the different components in the z approximately 0.765 absorber and the z approximately 0.685 lens toward B0218 + 357 to place stringent constraints on changes in F triple-bond g(p)[alpha(2)/mu](1.57). We obtain [DeltaF/F] = (0.44 +/- 0.36(stat) +/- 1.0(sys)t) x 10(-5), consistent with no evolution over the redshift range 0 < z < or = 0.7. The measurements have a 2sigma sensitivity of [Deltaalpha/alpha] < 6.7 x 10(-6) or [Deltamu/mu] < 1.4 x 10(-5) to fractional changes in alpha and mu over a period of approximately 6.5 G yr, half the age of the Universe. These are among the most sensitive constraints on changes in mu.  相似文献

A two-dimensional discrete element model (DEM) simulation of cohesive polygonal particles has been developed to assess the benefit of point source vibration to induce flow in wedge-shaped hoppers. The particle-particle interaction model used is based on a multi-contact principle. The first part of the study investigated particle discharge under gravity without vibration to determine the critical orifice size (Bc) to just sustain flow as a function of particle shape. It is shown that polygonal-shaped particles need a larger orifice than circular particles. It is also shown that Bc decreases as the number of particle vertices increases. Addition of circular particles promotes flow of polygons in a linear manner. The second part of the study showed that vibration could enhance flow, effectively reducing Bc. The model demonstrated the importance of vibrator location (height), consistent with previous continuum model results, and vibration amplitude in enhancing flow.  相似文献
