Semiconductor nanowires of high purity and crystallinity hold promise as building blocks for miniaturized optoelectrical devices. Using scanning-excitation single-wire emission spectroscopy, with either a laser or an electron beam as a spatially resolved excitation source, we observe standing-wave exciton polaritons in ZnO nanowires at room temperature. The Rabi splitting between the polariton branches is more than 100 meV. The dispersion curve of the modes in the nanowire is substantially modified due to light-matter interaction. This finding forms a key aspect in understanding subwavelength guiding in these nanowires.  相似文献

The lowest excited electronic state of molecular oxygen, singlet molecular oxygen, O(2)(a (1)Delta(g)), is a reactive species involved in many chemical and biological processes. To better understand the roles played by singlet oxygen in biological systems, particularly at the sub-cellular level, optical tools have been developed to create and directly detect this transient state in time- and spatially-resolved experiments from single cells. Data obtained indicate that, contrary to common perception, this reactive species can be quite long-lived in a cell and, as such, can diffuse over appreciable distances including across the cell membrane into the extracellular environment. On one hand, these results demonstrate that the behavior of singlet oxygen in an intact cell can be significantly different from that inferred from model bulk studies. More generally, these results provide a new perspective for mechanistic studies of intra- and inter-cellular signaling and events that ultimately lead to photo-induced cell death.  相似文献

The dissociative adsorption and decomposition on a range of metal surfaces of an alkane, an alkene, and an aromatic, all representative of species present in an important technological application, has been studied under conditions relevant to selective gas sensing based on solid electrolyte potentiometry. At 870 K, pure polycrystalline Pt surfaces do not discriminate between n-hexane, toluene, and 1-butene: graphitic carbon accumulation occurs at almost the same rate. However, by varying the composition of polycrystalline bimetallic Pt/Au surfaces, good discrimination between these species can be achieved. Thus at a nominal surface composition of approximately 75% Au (XPS), good selectivity toward 1-butene and toluene uptake is achieved, with essentially no response to n-hexane. At approximately 80% Au the system is selective to 1-butene alone. Particular merits of these systems include good high-temperature stability and good tunability of their chemical selectivity. This makes possible the development of array devices in which the elements have overlapping but different selectivity profiles.  相似文献

UV-visible and Raman spectroscopies as well as electrochemical techniques have been used to characterize cis- and trans-[Co(III)(en)2Cl2]Cl (en=ethylenediamine) complexes and the gamma-alumina-supported cis-Co((III)) complex. It is shown that the electrochemical reduction of these complexes occurs according to a multistage mechanism involving two electrochemical steps, with the formation of a dimer that was characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy (intervalence band at 670 nm). The apparent standard redox potential for each step has been determined, and experimental results reveal that cis and trans complexes present similar electrochemical characteristics. It is also shown that the deposition of trans-[Co(III)(en)2Cl2]+ on gamma-alumina leads to an inner-sphere complex (ISC) in a cis configuration in which Cl- ligands are substituted by OH or O- surface groups of alumina. These changes in the coordination sphere of the complex induce a substantial decrease of its apparent redox potential since it is -0.63 V/SCE (saturated calomel electrode) for the gamma-alumina-supported cis-Co(III) complex, whereas values of -0.17 and -0.35 V/SCE were determined in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for the trans and cis precursor complexes, respectively.  相似文献

Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements have been made of human and rabbit lens epithelial cells and their total soluble protein. Excitation at 350 nm results in broad fluorescence spectra peaking at 450 nm and stretching into the visible past 650 nm. The fluorescence excitation spectra peak around 350 nm. We assign the species responsible for this absorption and fluorescence as NADPH. Because the absorption of near-UV light (300-400 nm) is responsible for cell damage and death, we postulate that excited states of NADPH are implicated in the mechanisms of cell damage. Preirradiation with 355 nm light leads to a loss of NADPH fluorescence but with no change in decay kinetics. Possible mechanisms for cell damage are explored.  相似文献

The spin-polarized plane-wave pseudopotential method, based on density-functional theory, has been used to calculate the electronic band structures and the optical absorption spectra of nitrogen-doped and oxygen-deficient anatase TiO2. The calculated results are in good agreement with our experimental measurements. These ab initio calculations reveal that the optical absorption of nitrogen-doped TiO2 in the visible light region is primarily located between 400 and 500 nm, while that of oxygen-deficient TiO2 is mainly above 500 nm. These results have important implications for the understanding and further development of photocatalytic materials that are active under visible light.  相似文献

A high-level waste (HLW) remediation process scheduled to begin in 2007 at the Savannah River Site is the Modular Caustic Side Solvent Extraction (CSSX) Unit (MCU). The MCU will use a hydrocarbon solvent (diluent) containing a cesium extractant, a calix[4]arene compound, to extract radioactive cesium from caustic HLW. The resulting decontaminated HLW waste or raffinate will be processed into grout at the Saltstone Production Facility (SPF). The cesium containing CSSX stream will undergo washing with dilute nitric acid followed by stripping of the cesium nitrate into a very dilute nitric acid or the strip effluent stream and the CSSX solvent will be recycled. The Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) will receive the strip effluent stream and immobilize the cesium into borosilicate glass. Excess CSSX solvent carryover from the MCU creates a potential flammability problem during DWPF processing. Bench-scale DWPF process testing was performed with simulated waste to determine the fate of the CSSX solvent components. A simple high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed to identify the modifier (which is used to increase Cs extraction and extractant solubility) and extractant within the DWPF process. The diluent and triocytlamine (which is used to suppress impurity effect and ion-pair disassociation) were determined using gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GCMS). To close the organic balance, two types of sample preparation methods were needed. One involved extracting aqueous samples with methylene chloride or hexane, and the second was capturing the off gas of the DWPF process using carbon tubes and rinsing the tubes with carbon disulfide for analysis. This paper addresses the development of the analytical methods and the bench-scale simulated waste study results.  相似文献
